May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People. Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People are three times more likely to go missing and six to seven times more likely to be murdered. Every red dress is a reminder of someone who should still be here with their family. 💔 #mmiwg2s

School is back!

The new course “Decolonizing the Design Process,” offered at Langara College, de-centers the designer from the process. Solutions are found through humble and reciprocal sharing. No longer a “star-chitect,” the designer takes equal billing and responsibility in the process with client, user, community, and stakeholder. Students are encouraged to reflect on their positionality and relationships to power through walking a mile in each others’ shoes. This year the course will be taught by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Artist and Educator, Aaron Nelson-Moody (aka Splash) and Clair Wood, Architect, Evans Architecture. Lost & Found’s Associate Principal, Scot Geib, developed this important course with Indigenous Curriculum Advisor, Earl Einarson.

This story written by Earl Einarson and illustrated by Julie Flett is a story of a young Aboriginal child in foster care who is given a special gift by his foster mother. This gift was cherished and one he wanted to share with his own child. During mikisiwipisim (Eagle Moon) 🌙 we were inspired to learn about the history of moccasins. We used our knowledge from books we have read & research we did. 🧠 We learned that moccasins were originally made with a soft bottom so that they could easily fit into snowshoes. We also learned that moccasins were originally decorated with ochre paint, ribbon, & porcupine quills instead of the beaded floral pattern that is popular today! 🌸 The students designed their own pair of moccasins and shared their new understanding of moccasins and displayed the information on our bulletin board. 🖤

It’s been a while since I’ve done a book review! 📚 Here are a few of the books we’ve read recently:
The Tiny Seed 🌱- I love Eric Carle. This book covers the lifecycle of a flower. 🌺 I used this in my Science unit on plants, but there are so many activities you can do with this book! I rate this book 9/10. ✨
The Eagle Feather 🦅- This book talks about the virtues that eagle feathers hold. 🪶 This story is written by Kevin Locke who is a man of many talents. He is best known for his hoop dancing. After reading his story, we learned a little bit more about the author and watched videos of him hoop dancing. I rate this book 7.5/10. ✨
The Moccasins 🥿- I love this story. It is such a sweet story about a foster child & his very special tradition. 💕 I usually read this book when teaching my kiddos about traditions in Social Studies. I rate this book 10/10. ✨
Ruby Finds a Worry- This book is perfect for young kiddos, who may carry worries, fears, or anxiety, and not know what to do with such big feelings. ✏️ I feel like this book is especially perfect this year with the pandemic going on. I read this to my kiddos online last year, and I am so thankful to read this story in person this year. It is a great way to start a conversation with our students about big feelings we may be feeling and how it is important to talk about them. I rate this book 9/10. ✨

“My foster mother gave me moccasins to wear in the house. They were fine soft shoes made of tanned hide with a beaded pattern on top. She told me my background was Native, and that it was a good thing to be. She told me to wear my moccasins proudly. The hide smelled good, like a cozy campfire. They made me feel warm and loved.” ❤️.

📣Sustainabiliteens proudly endorses Earl Einarson for Richmond-Queensborough! 📣

✨Earl Einarson, a member of the Ktunaza First Nation, was driven to run for office after his first-hand experiences with racism and colonialism of our broken system: he was forcefully taken from his mother at birth and went through the grief of losing his sister.
🌱🌱🌱
Living in Richmond for twenty years working in Indigenous education, Earl deeply cares about his community. His expertise is in tech, having worked in the sector since the 1990’s and regularly researching new technologies.

If elected, Earl’s top priorities will be stopping fossil fuel projects and subsidies in order to transform our fragile, extraction-based economy and building a solid transition plan for affected workers.💪

🔉Earl Einarson’s campaign is the tiniest yet, with 2 core volunteers and a minimal budget; it’s a tough competition with opponent Jas Johal, who had more than $67,000 to spend to win his riding in 2017.

Despite those barriers, Earl is an inspiration, and whether he wins or not, we hope you will join us in supporting him in his mission to help his community.

💥Sign-up at the link in bio to volunteer or support him in any way you can 💥

On Wednesday we traveled by Sky Train (hooray for transit!) to New Westminster to release our full platform. It was wonderful to be joined by 17 of our Lower Mainland candidates.

Then another trip by Sky Train to Surrey where we had a second press conference, and got to connect with several more candidates.

It was another whirlwind trip, and great to see the excitement and enthusiasm that people are feeling about the BC Green Party.
