Stephen Byth's 'Growth in Stasis' is OUT NOW on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms!

'Growth in Stasis' is rooted in an idea that has stayed with Byth since a workshop with his longtime hero Wayne Shorter. "I once asked Wayne, 'How do you turn poison into medicine through your music?' His response - 'The poison is the medicine' - has stayed with me ever since," he recalls. "This album lives in that idea: that struggle, friction and uncertainty are not obstacles to meaning, but the very source of it." That philosophy permeates every aspect of the record, from its layered compositional architecture to its spacious improvisations and richly detailed production.

Stephen Byth's album Growth in Stasis comes out in just two days!

Joined by a formidable New York quartet - Yessaï Karapetian (piano, synthesizers), Simón Willson (bass), and Angus Mason (drums) - Byth presents music that balances lyrical beauty with searching intensity, drawing together contemporary jazz improvisation, cinematic orchestration, electronic textures, and open-ended collective interplay. Recognised as “a compelling new voice in Australian jazz,” Byth continues to refine a deeply personal musical language that embraces uncertainty, transformation, and presence.

BIGYUKI (US/JAP) is coming to Sydney next Monday October 19 at The Vanguard, supported by our very own Distant Birds.

BIGYUKI is NYC’s musical secret weapon. The New York-based, Japanese keyboardist, composer and producer has built an international reputation for blending jazz, hip hop, rock, electronic and dance music influences into something wholly his own. This is music that demands to be experienced in person: high-energy, unpredictable and utterly immersive.

Supporting BIGYUKI will be Distant Birds, the hypnotic new collaboration between Chris Abrahams (The Necks) and Dave Symes (Boy & Bear). A project born from deep musical trust and mutual curiosity, the duo traverses twilight soundscapes of pulsing grooves, moody atmospheres and extended improvisational forms. Channeling 70s Afrobeat, soul, and dub-reggae influences, the music is raw yet intricately textured.

Jeremy Rose and Chris Abrahams are bringing you a live, fully improvised duo album titled TONE, recorded at Sydney’s Red House. Their first single Carapace is out today!

Rose and Abrahams first began their collaboration through The Vampires’ ARIA Award-winning album Nightjar, where Abrahams’ unmistakable pianism became part of the band’s evolving sound world. On TONE, that connection is brought into its most exposed form: a fully improvised duo setting, with Rose on saxophones and live electronic textures, and Abrahams at the piano.

Listen to Carapace via the link in bio.

See the duo perform live at 21 Shepherd, Marrickville next Friday 16 October.

Tripudiis Sonis Variis by HYPERBAROQ is OUT NOW on CD, Bandcamp and all streaming platforms.

Translating to "a jubilation of sounds", Hyperbaroq reimagines baroque arias in the modern day, with acoustic instruments meeting loops, synthesisers, electric guitar, sound art and a remarkable palette of winds, including duduk, chalumeau, Chinese flute and Bolivian moseño.

The album ultimately asks a simple question: how much does human feeling really change across five centuries? Longing, grief, desire, fear and joy recur throughout Tripudiis Sonis Variis, regardless of whether their melodies were written in the thirteenth century, the seventeenth century or transformed in a Melbourne studio in 2026. HYPERBAROQ’s answer is not to reconstruct the past, but to enter into conversation with it.

It's been two weeks since Visions of Nar's Awakening came out. Have you had a listen?

Awakening continues the band’s mission to weave cultural narratives through music. Inspired by the Armenian goddess Nar - deity of water, sea and rain - the music channels cycles of renewal and transformation. It’s a kaleidoscopic work: deeply personal yet universal.

BIGYUKI (US/JAP) is coming to Sydney on Monday October 19 at The Vanguard, supported by our very own Distant Birds.

BIGYUKI is NYC’s musical secret weapon. The New York-based, Japanese keyboardist, composer and producer has built an international reputation for blending jazz, hip hop, rock, electronic and dance music influences into something wholly his own.

But on stage with his own trio is where BIGYUKI truly comes alive. This is music that demands to be experienced in person: high-energy, unpredictable and utterly immersive. Expect thunderous grooves, explosive improvisation, deep bass and moments that veer from hypnotic to euphoric without warning.

Channeling 70s Afrobeat, soul, and dub-reggae influences, the music is raw yet intricately textured—Moog synths, Fender Rhodes and Hammond organs swirl over infectious bass lines, with layers of saxophone and trumpet doubling Abraham’s extended right hand extemporisations, and Evan Manell’s subtly shifting drum patterns. The result is a world of syncopated hooks and rhythmic interplay, designed as much for the dancefloor as for immersive, headphone listening.

Get your tickets now via the link in bio.
