the old trick of putting conkers on your windowsill to keep spiders out? sadly it doesn’t work 🌰

there’s no science behind it at all. when it’s been tested, spiders walked right past the conkers like they weren’t even there 🕷️

the reason you’re seeing more of them right now is that autumn is house spider mating season. the males leave their webs and go wandering in search of a partner, which is why they keep turning up across the living room floor ✨

if you can, leave them be. they’re great at catching flies and fungus gnats, so a little spider near your houseplants is basically free pest control 🌿

do you put the conkers out anyway? 👀

Monstera vs Monstera 🌿 Are you mixing these two up?

The Monstera deliciosa is the big one. It’s a natural climber that can reach up to 8m in the right conditions, and its splits run all the way to the leaf edge.

The Monstera adansonii is smaller and loves to trail. Its oval holes stay inside the leaf, giving it that bushy, lacy look. Pop it on a shelf and let it spill down, or train it up a moss pole.

Can’t tell them apart? Your secret’s safe with us 🤫

Which one’s your favourite: deliciosa or adansonii? Tell us below 👇

plot twist 🙈 the first one is actually a Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, not a monstera at all. We said your secret’s safe with us… turns out ours isn’t. Thanks for keeping us honest 🌿

it’s bulb planting season 🌷 a few minutes with a trowel now and you’ll have colour waiting for you in spring

daffodils, crocus and hyacinths can all go in now. tulips are happy to wait until november, when the colder soil helps keep disease away 🍂

pointy end up, roots down. if you really can’t tell which way is which, just plant it on its side and it’ll sort itself out 🌱

no garden? pots work too. put the bigger bulbs at the bottom and smaller ones on top, and hyacinths in a bowl make a lovely indoor plant on a bright windowsill ✨

save this for when the bulbs hit the shops. what are you planting this year? 🌼

got a bunch of dried lavender? don’t just leave it in a vase 💜

pull the little buds off the stems and pop them into small organza bags. tuck them into drawers, wardrobes and coat pockets and your clothes will smell lovely, plus moths aren’t fans of the scent 🌿

little earth tip: give the bags a squeeze every few weeks to wake the smell back up, and top them up with fresh buds when they fade ✨

if you grow your own, lavender is happy in a pot on a sunny windowsill or patio, so you can dry next year’s batch yourself 🪴

what’s your go-to trick for keeping clothes fresh?

the days are getting shorter and your plants have definitely noticed 🍂

less light means most houseplants slow right down in autumn, so moving them closer to the window helps them catch what’s left of it. even a step or two makes a difference ☀️

give them a quarter turn every week too, so every side gets its share and they don’t end up leaning towards the glass 🌿

little earth tip: keep leaves from touching cold windows on frosty nights ❄️

have you moved any of yours yet? ✨

don’t bin the ends of your spring onions, they’ll grow back 🌱

keep the white bits with the roots still attached and pop them in a small glass of water on a sunny windowsill. change the water every couple of days and you should see new green shoots in about a week 💧

it’s one of the easiest ways to start growing your own, and they’ll look right at home next to your houseplants on the sill ✨

swipe through for the steps and save this for later 🧅

if you’re a serial plant killer, meet the yucca 🌿

it’s about as low maintenance as houseplants get. go on holiday or forget it exists for a bit and it’ll cope with drying out far better than most plants. come winter, it barely needs watering at all 💧

give it a bright, sunny spot and well-drained compost and that’s really about it. the main thing to watch is overwatering, which is where most yuccas come unstuck ✨

it looks great too, with a trunk like a tree and a big bushy top, so it fills a living room corner beautifully 🪴

want more plants that are really hard to kill? ✨

we know the router is ugly and hiding it behind a monstera is very tempting 🌿 but it might be why your wifi keeps dropping out

wifi signals don’t travel well through water, and big leafy plants and damp soil are full of the stuff 💧 a jungle of pots around the router can soak up some of the signal before it reaches the rest of the house

routers also run warm, and watering or misting right next to electrics is never a good idea ⚡ so give it a shelf of its own, up high and out in the open, and let your plants have the bright spot by the window instead ✨

where does your router live? 🪴

ever noticed your houseplants start struggling once october hits? 🍂

it’s usually not the cold, it’s the watering. the days are shorter and the light is lower, so plants slow right down and drink a
lot less than they did in summer. stick to your summer routine and you could end up drowning them without realising 💧

our rule is simple: touch the soil before you water. if it’s even slightly damp, leave it. when in doubt, wait it out ✨

what’s your trickiest plant to water in autumn? 🪴

it’s that time of year where the evenings get chilly and your tender plants start giving you a look 🌿

basil, chillies and pelargoniums really don’t like the cold, so it’s worth moving them indoors before the first frost. your brightest windowsill is the best spot, and a quick check for any hitchhiking bugs before they come in goes a long way 🐛

think of it as your plants moving into their cosy winter flat 🏡 they’ll carry on growing quietly on the sill while it gets frosty outside ✨

what are you bringing in this week? 🪴

it’s properly dark by seven now and the big light makes everything feel a bit like a dentist’s waiting room

turn it off and use three smaller lamps in different corners of the room instead. try to mix the heights too, with one low, one on a table and one taller, so the light feels soft and layered rather than flat 💡

go for warm white bulbs over cool white, and put one lamp behind or beside you so it’s not shining straight in your face. your houseplants will look lovely in it too, all glowy leaves and soft shadows 🌿

you don’t need to spend loads either. charity shops are full of lamps, and you could do the whole room for around £40 ✨

are you a big light person or a lamp person?

took a torch out into the garden after dark and it’s a whole different world out there 🔦

slugs, worms and millipedes all come out at night when it’s cooler and damper, and autumn is peak spider season too 🕷️

the millipedes and worms are busy eating dead leaves and turning them back into soil, so your plants are basically getting fed while you sleep 🌱

if you want to have a look, go out about an hour after dark on a damp night and check walls, paths and under plant pots.

what’s living in your garden? ✨
