🔎 ELI’S SECOND MONTHLY INTELLIGENCE BRIEF IS HERE Inside the Trafficking Networks: ELI Intelligence Helps Stop a $7 Million Turtle Trafficking Operation Turtle trafficking is a global, highly profitable wildlife crime fueled by growing demand and online networks connecting traffickers with buyers around the world. Our latest intelligence brief examines Operation VALLARTA, an ELI investigation that helped lead to the record-setting seizure of 930 endangered turtles at Los Angeles International Airport, a shipment valued at up to $7 million. Our brief uses this case to examine the larger global turtle trafficking trade, which is fueled by high profit margins, growing demand, and online marketplaces that connect traffickers with international buyers. But seizures are only part of the story. ELI goes undercover to identify the people, methods, and criminal networks driving the illegal wildlife trade, providing intelligence that helps law enforcement disrupt trafficking at its source. Your support helps make this work possible. 🔎 KNOW YOUR TRAFFICKER: Meet ELI’s Persons of Interest This month, ELI is introducing a new monthly feature: Know Your Trafficker. Each month, we’ll give our supporters a closer look at the persons of interest (POIs) our team investigates in the field, including some of the most important international wildlife traffickers in the world, and the complex criminal networks behind them. These aren’t shadowy figures operating on the margins. They can be businessmen, exporters, restaurant owners, family men, and seemingly legitimate businesspeople who also move ivory, rhino horn, jaguar parts, pangolin scales, and live animals. They are often connected to drug trafficking, money laundering, corruption, and other forms of organized crime. This month, we’re profiling Mx57, a China and Mexico-based wildlife trafficker whose networks span multiple continents and whose activities extend far beyond wildlife trafficking. ELI has shared relevant intelligence and identifying information with U.S. government authorities to support ongoing efforts to investigate and disrupt these top-level criminals. But this work starts in the field. With your support, we can continue putting our investigators on the ground, uncovering key POIs, mapping criminal networks, and providing authorities with the intelligence they need to act. Help keep ELI in the field targeting the traffickers at the top of these criminal networks. 🌎 Donate today. www.earthleagueinternational.org 📖 Read our latest newsletter and learn more about Mx57 here: https://mailchi.mp/earthleagueinternational.org/eli-2024-impact-14193051 by @earthleagueint
🔎 TRAFFICKING DIARIES™ | CASE STUDY 01 What do traffickers reveal when they think no one is listening? Over the past 15 years, Earth League International (ELI) has gone undercover to earn the trust of some of the world’s most significant environmental traffickers, including top-tier organized crime figures. In that time, ELI has accumulated hundreds of hours of recorded conversations, audio and video, that almost no one else has access to. Our new Trafficking Diaries™ series brings some of that intelligence to light, providing a rare look at how these criminal networks operate and how environmental crime converges with wildlife trafficking, illegal trade, money laundering and corruption. Our first case study, Rhino Horn, Ephedra and Money Laundering, draws from ELI’s Operation OLD WORLD and a recorded conversation that reveals how traffickers exploited legitimate China-Europe rail routes to move illegal products into Europe. This is why long-term undercover operations matter. ELI’s hope is that governments and agencies invest more in this kind of work, which remains one of the most effective ways to understand how these networks operate and gather the intelligence needed to dismantle them. 📖 Learn more Operation OLD WORLD report at the link in our bio! #TraffickingDiaries #WildlifeTrafficking #EnvironmentalCrime #CrimeConvergence #WildlifeCrime #UndercoverInvestigation #EarthLeagueInternational #OperationOldWorld by @earthleagueint
What does the illegal wildlife trade look like from the inside? For more than a year, ELI investigators went undercover inside some of Southeast Asia’s most significant wildlife trafficking networks. Through Operation SANDOKAN, our teams sat face-to-face with traffickers, mapped supply chains, and uncovered connections between wildlife crime, corruption, organized crime, and illicit economies across the Lower Mekong. This is the information that doesn’t exist in public records. ELI fills critical information gaps by going where others can’t—to uncover how the world’s most dangerous environmental criminals actually operate. 🎥 Now, you can see what our investigators witnessed firsthand. In collaboration with Wildlight Global, ELI released exclusive undercover footage from Operation SANDOKAN, offering a rare look inside the networks driving the illegal wildlife trade. Earth League International is honored to be featured in Mongabay (@mongabay) for Operation SANDOKAN, our undercover investigation exposing one of Southeast Asia’s largest wildlife trafficking networks. For more than a year, ELI investigators infiltrated criminal networks across Cambodia, uncovering five alleged kingpins linked to wildlife trafficking, human trafficking, narcotics, financial crime, and online scam centers. As ELI Founder and Executive Director, Andrea Crosta (@andreacrosta_official) says: “Our work is to give a name and a face to these ‘ghosts’ so they’re not invisible anymore.” By identifying the top-level people and networks behind environmental crime, ELI provides intelligence that helps law enforcement target and take effective action against criminal organizations, not just individual seizures. Through partnerships with respected media outlets like Mongabay, ELI continues to raise public awareness of the sophisticated networks driving wildlife trafficking. These collaborations help build support for intelligence-led conservation efforts and strengthen international cooperation. 🤲 Read the full feature at the link in our bio. #EarthLeagueInternational #Mongabay #wildlife #WildlifeTrafficking #EnvironmentalCrime #Conservation by @earthleagueint
ELI Launches New Monthly Intelligence Brief Series: Inside the Trafficking Networks Behind Environmental Crime Today, we're excited to launch a new monthly series of concise intelligence briefs that share insights emerging directly from our field investigations and intelligence operations. Our first brief explores the global trade in donkey skins, a widespread but often overlooked trade that our field investigations revealed is closely intertwined with broader illegal wildlife trafficking networks. Drawing on intelligence gathered by ELI investigators and analysts, it shows how traffickers exploit donkey skin shipments to facilitate the movement of other illegal wildlife products, offering a compelling example of environmental crime convergence in action. Importantly, this intelligence does not end with publication. Based on these findings, ELI shared confidential intelligence with law enforcement and government agencies, contributing to investigations and other non-public enforcement actions. Our team also shared intelligence with relevant media outlets to support investigative reporting that helps expose these criminal networks. Through this new series, we hope to equip governments, law enforcement, researchers, journalists, policymakers, and the public with timely insights that strengthen the collective effort to protect our Planet. Have a topic related to illegal wildlife trafficking, environmental crime, or crime convergence you'd like us to explore in a future brief? We'd love to hear from you.
