“Honey We Got Time” by @__mayaelise__ ! It’s the culmination of many years of writing and recording and proof that you can still make music even after band members move to Oregon, get real jobs, and/or have babies. This EP was—and is—in no hurry. It’s laid back AF. It’s patiently groovy. It swaggers sweetly. It makes driving back from Yosemite feel so much shorter.

Maya wrote the songs, sang, and played guitars (including a lot of lead electric); @jor.tina on harmonies, bass, and keys; @mgilvryallen on harmonies, fiddle, bass, harmonica, glass jar dinks, car beeps and bonks, vocal chops, etc.; @jdvanover and @scottelliottferreter on electric guitars; and the @r_b_g_b on winds.

I got to do all the things. Drumming, tambourining, co-producing, recording, mixing, and mastering. I even played a bit of bass. With the exception of my one argument with @mgilvryallen about whether yodeling should be allowed, making this album was a good dream—the best dream. Thanks to Maya for writing such good songs and to the band for entrusting me with the engineering. Love y’all!

“Felt” by Sheepish King (@jor.tina)! I had the honor and pleasure of mixing and mastering the first 4 songs on this EP. “The Defeat of Mara” by Avatamsaka Collective is pretty much a Buddhist rock opera. It tells the story of Buddha’s trials on the road to enlightenment. It’s a variety pack of genres, from ambient to rock, dance hall electronic to metal, emo, acoustic folk and soul. Ben Gustin wrote these songs and recorded them with me over the course of a handful of sessions. It was mostly 1st takes, or maybe a 2nd. It was like throwing paint on a wall and just going with it. Kind of insane that it’s all now neatly tucked into in one green square that slides past your eyes. Are you ready for this ride?

This new-to-me refurbished TEAC A-3440 reel-to-reel tape deck sounds so good on drums. This is my drum bus with no in-the-box processing. Just drive the input, saturate the tape. Get some nice crunch, excitement, and transient control. (Loudness level-matched with the bypassed audio.) by @earthtonesaudio

“Giving Up in Little Ways” by @__mayaelise__ is the perfect driving song if there ever was one. Contrary to what the title suggests, this song is less about acquiescing in the face of existential futility and more about driving around in a van with your best friends, being awesome, and playing music to a handful of strangers.

It grooves. It clunks. It glides. It wiggles into your ears and doesn’t leave until you listen to “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers.

We have Maya on vocals and rhythm guitars, @mgilvryallen on fiddle, vocal chops, van sounds, harmonies and probably some other stuff, @jor.tina on bass and harmonies, @jdvanover on slide electric, and me on drums, percussion, and synth drone.

“What We Found in the Seams” by @badcamper. Really proud of this epic album that I had the honor and pleasure of recording, mixing, and mastering. We worked on this piecemeal over the course of 5 years and at 3 of my studios. It’s huge and edgy but also intimate and earnest in a way that satisfies my inner emo rocker. “Central Valley Heat” by @scottelliottferreter. It’s hotter than the devil’s nips. Thank you to Scott, my tennis nemesis (tennesis), for giving me the pleasure of mixing this groovy-ass ode to the sweltering badlands I have to drive through to get to the Sierra mountains. This song is so good it almost makes me reconsider my aversion to that place.
