Three years ago I wanted to screen my first short film in front of friends + family, cast and crew. However, asking everyone to come to a theatre for a 10-minute short film felt like overkill, and so I started talking to other local filmmakers to see if they wanted to join in and showcase their work on the big screen as well - and so a short film exhibition was born. For the past two years we’ve filled The Cinematheque (a local cinema) with local films from local artists with all additional proceeds going to a local charity. Everything about the event has been community focused, and for the past two years we’ve sold out The Cinematheque and raised over $5,000 for the DTES Women’s Centre. This year, the exhibition has a name: RODA (hoh-dah). Since ya boi is now fluent in Portuguese, and my heart is half Brazilian, it only made sense to name this event in Portuguese. Roda is a circle or gathering of people coming together to share something - that could be art, music, or culture. It felt pretty fitting for what this event has become. What’s also new about this year is that we are growing. With support from @cereal_post, @eastcherry, @thirdrodeopictureco and @tvdinnershop - all local and incredible businesses (unbiased opinion) - I am very excited to say that ALL ticket sales from Roda will go directly to the DTES Women’s Centre. TV Dinner will also be joining us the day of the event for pre-show drinks + bites at The Cinematheque, and in the month leading up to Roda, a portion of their drip + iced coffee sales will go to the Women’s Centre.
