🏆 Introducing the first Eastern States 100 Volunteer of the Year award for 2026: Jeffrey Golden! In March, Jeffrey fell 15 feet into a crater near Wasatch, Utah, suffering serious fractures and multiple ligament injuries. Rather than retreat, he chose to lean in, dedicating this season to what he calls “solidarity volunteering” (or what he calls, "being out there for as many hours as, if not more than, the last runner on the course.") At Worlds End, he captained High Knob and supported aid stations throughout the course. At Ironstone, he again volunteered station to station, then cheered every runner to the finish with a voice that seemed incapable of quitting. At Eastern States, he went above and beyond again: working aid stations, directing traffic, assisting runners across the Tomb Flats river crossing, sweeping, and helping retrieve the final runner after a medical situation nearly two hours past our official cutoff. Jeffrey reminds us that the heart of trail running isn't just about the miles we cover, but the people who show up for one another when the going gets tough. Jeffrey, our hats are off to you. From 2022 through 2025, only three people managed to complete the PA Summer of Sufferfest: five of Pennsylvania’s hardest ultramarathons crammed into a six-month period. This year, SEVEN MORE have voluntarily subjected themselves to the same questionable experiment. To qualify for this distinguished and medically inadvisable fraternity, a runner must complete all five: 🪨Hyner Trail Challenge 50K: The traditional Pennsylvania introduction to poor decision-making. Fifty kilometers of rocks, roots, elevation and the dawning realization that this was only the beginning. 🪨Worlds End Ultramarathon 100K: A wilderness odyssey designed to make you question your relationship with hills, forests and the concept of forward progress. 🪨Ironstone 100K: One hundred kilometers of ridgelines, rocks, quartzite and consequences. A course specifically engineered to remind you that every voluntary decision has consequences 🪨Eastern States 100: The high altar of Pennsylvania suffering. One hundred miles around the “Wild and Bewildering” course, because apparently circumnavigating it once wasn't enough. 🪨Black Forest 100K: A dark, brutal excursion through the Reaper’s backyard, where the trails are rugged, the climbs are unreasonable and your previous four races offer absolutely no transferable warranty coverage. And somehow, after all that, seven individuals finished all five. Eastern States 100 registration is in full swing—and apparently, everyone got the memo. In the first hour alone, 111 runners signed up for the Supported Class and another 30 joined the Unsupported Class, representing 20 states and two Canadian provinces. Yeah... registration is moving a little faster this year. For perspective, last year we had 192 total registrations during the entire FIRST WEEK. This year, we hit 141 in the first hour. So, uh... hello. 👋 We’re excited to see so much interest in the 2027 Eastern States 100, and we’re looking forward to welcoming runners from near and far to the Lost and Bewildered River next August. EASTERN STATES 100 2027 REGISTRATION OPENS OCTOBER 1 📢 Registration opens Thursday, October 1 at 6:00 PM “Beast Coast” Time. Eastern States isn’t a race anyone should take lightly, so we don’t expect registration to sell out in approximately 14 seconds. But every year is different, so who knows what will happen when we open the gates. While you wait, check out our 2026 Race in Review, featuring race reports, first-person accounts, photo galleries, videos, and more. We believe the most important stories aren’t always at the front of the race. The stories of grit, recovery, doubt, determination and simply refusing to quit often come from people who are just like us. You never know who might find inspiration in your story. For 2027, there won’t be many noticeable changes—but there are a couple worth mentioning. We’re working toward a more real-time Race Tracker, including estimated runner locations and aid-station ETAs based on 10 years of course data and current performance. We’ll also issue 180 optional vehicle permits at $5 each, giving unsupported runners the flexibility to switch to supported while helping us manage our impact on public lands. October 1. 6 PM. This weekend, we held a logistics recon at the Sideling Hill Tunnel, because apparently we needed to spend a perfectly good Saturday figuring out how to operate a 160-mile ultramarathon inside a giant, unlit hole in the ground. If you’ve been living in a hole yourself and somehow don’t know anything about The VOID: it’s a 160-mile ultramarathon run on November 20-22, entirely inside an abandoned, unlit tunnel that was once part of the original Pennsylvania Turnpike, famously known as America’s First Superhighway. Participants already signed up for this mind-twisting event will receive an email this week with a short survey and some important updates. A PDF Participant Handbook will follow a couple of weeks later. The trails hold the best conversations of my life. I laced up Mark’s shoes and covered 200 miles through the Pennsylvania mountains in his memory at @worldsendultra @easternstates100 . Every mile on that trail is a conversation I wish I could have again, and a reminder of the ones that still matter right now with the people in front of us. Mental health struggles don’t always look loud. Sometimes they look like a friend who shows up, talks, and seems fine. Ask anyway. Sit with the discomfort of the question. Capturing the pure essence of the human condition is the passion I carry behind my photography. It always has been. As the onlooker at @easternstates100 I watch as people actively choose to lean into discomfort, to rely on those around them for support and guidance, and dig deep within themselves to push on through everything in the moment that is working against them. Ultramarathons give the truest reflection of who we are in real life. Do we want to succumb to every little thing that life throws at us? Or do we stand tall, focus on our “why,” and continue to pursue relentless forward motion, one step at a time? You are my people. As I sift through these photos, each and every one of you continues to gift me with the life messages I so desperately needed to remind me who I really am. Thank you. We are beyond proud. Courtney, Traci and Maggie. Three of our own. Part of the tight-knit Baker Ultra family. They showed up this past weekend, all three crushing Eastern States, tackling over 100 miles and a mind-blowing 20,000 feet of (brutal) climbing. What we love more: in a few short weeks, they’ll be back at it, toeing the line at our Baker Trail UltraChallenge 50-miler. Truly remarkable. (And we’re not done celebrating the ES100 finishers.
