🎨 Riverside Artist Spotlight: Juan Navarro

Born and raised on Riverside’s Eastside, Juan Navarro has dedicated his life to telling our city’s stories through art. What started as creating custom artwork for friends has grown into more than 30 largescale murals that celebrate Riverside’s history, culture, and neighborhoods.

What makes Juan’s work so special is that it isn’t just about painting walls, it’s about bringing people together. He works alongside students, families, and neighbors to create murals that reflect the people and stories of each community.

As the first Artist-in-Residence at the Riverside Art Museum’s Eastside program, The Branch, Juan has helped transform public spaces while mentoring the next generation of artists. His impact even reached the White House in 2023 when he joined the museum as it received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

Today, through Eastside Arthouse, Juan continues to invest in Riverside by creating opportunities for emerging artists and proving that art has the power to inspire, unite, and strengthen a community.

Thank you, Juan, for making Riverside more beautiful one mural at a time. ❤️🎨

📍Follow Juan’s journey and be sure to check out his incredible murals throughout Riverside! by @eastsidearthouse

A new mural by Riverside artist Juan Navarro now transforms the east-facing wall of the Thompson Colgate building in downtown Riverside. At its center is a child who remains the same age throughout a visual journey from student to graduate to professional. This intentional choice reflects the mural’s core message: young people matter now, not just in the future.

Created through a partnership between the Riverside County Office of Education, HL Development, and community partners, the mural celebrates education as both achievement and personal growth. The student is depicted learning through exploration and play, surrounded by stars, hearts, and smiley faces inspired by encouraging teacher feedback. As the imagery progresses, the child becomes a graduate and later a professional building the future, symbolizing how learning creates opportunities across many career paths.

A key element is Riverside’s historic Victoria Bridge, which Navarro uses as a metaphor for education—the foundation of knowledge passed from one generation to the next. The bridge also represents the collective support of families, educators, mentors, and communities that help students succeed.

Drawing from his own experiences in Riverside schools, Navarro honors the teachers who encouraged his creativity. Ultimately, the mural celebrates curiosity, perseverance, and lifelong learning while reminding viewers that every child deserves to be seen, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
