Eastside Café (@eastsidecafela) is not a literal cafe, but a collective and community-driven hub for social change.

Since 2002, it has served as a place for cultural preservation through art, from son jarocho to Danza Azteca, and a stronghold for resistance against housing and education inequities.

Two years ago, some members of our network met agroecologist Saad Dagher, who spoke with us about his seed saving project and the power of food sovereignty in liberation. (Swipe to see clips of his talk!) Recently, he was elected mayor of his village. As mayor, he started initiatives that further strengthen local food sovereignty, which you can read more about on the donation page. However, the projects are hampered due to lack of resources. And so, in the spirit of international solidarity that originally brought us together, we offered to start this fundraiser.

We see this small effort as a protest against the millions of our taxdollars that go towards the destruction of life in P@le$tine. Any amount is appreciated! Link to donate in bio❤️‍🔥 by @eastsidecafela

Join @bitchimawitchh on Tuesday, September 29th for a juicy evening of co-conspiring in LA! Hosted at Eastside Café, a volunteer-run space to address social injustices that impact our east LA communities, the evening will open with poetry by local legend @itswalela, then move into a panel discussion with LATU eastside chapter founder Leonardo Vilchis and author of the new book Decolonizing Money, Julio Linaries, to discuss their perspectives of direct action to tangibly dismantle the systems of rent and the U.S. petro-dollar. As a coop worker-owner, artist and community organizer, Mara has lots of thoughts!

Come be a part of the conversation. The event will run from 7-9:30. Tickets are sliding scale, free to $25. Free snacks and drinks included! 🧡 Event flyer for a panel discussion event and poetry reading held at the Eastside Cafe in Los Angeles. At the top, a banner reads in Spanish, "Hasta que la dignidad se haga costumbre" (Until dignity becomes a custom). Below the banner are the covers of two books: "Decolonizing Money: The Promise of Abolishing the US Dollar" by Julio Linares on the left, and "Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End the Housing Crisis" by Tracy Rosenthal and Leonardo Vilchis on the right. Between the books is the Eastside Cafe logo, a stylized black flower with the words "a state of mind" written underneath. The center of the flyer details the event logistics: Tuesday, September 29, from 7:00 to 9:30 PM at 5469 Huntington Dr N, Los Angeles, CA 90032.The bottom section notes that the event features poems by Walela Nehanda and conversations and readings by Leonardo Vilchis and Julio Linares. On Thursday of last week, dozens filed inside Coyotl + Macehualli Lending Library. The gentrification of El Sereno was on everyone’s mind.

“I experienced how racist and corrupt the local and state government is,” said co-founder Brenda Contreras, who helped raise money to purchase the land and return it to the Tongva people. She said she started the space as a way to share what worked and didn’t so people would feel less intimidated to speak up.

Ever since L.A. Material broke news that Beverly Hills-based real estate developer Langdon Street Capital, which purchased Grand Central Market in 2017, snatched up six parcels of land on Huntington Drive in El Sereno and rented a space to Canyon Coffee, the community has been in uproar.

The social media commentary is split. Some residents say they’d rather have new businesses than vacant storefronts while others want to keep out developers to avoid rapidly gentrifying like Highland Park. Most want less homeless encampments and cleaner streets, but there’s a misconception that gentrification helps these issues.

Guest speaker Fernanda Sanchez, who wrote her college thesis on the accelerated gentrification of Highland Park, said “gentrification is often disguised as revitalization, but it’s a violent form of erasure that leads to more homelessness.”

Mexican Traditional Medicine is not a single, frozen system from the past.

It is diverse, regional, historical, and alive. It has changed through generations of Indigenous knowledge, community practice, migration, colonization, exchange, adaptation, and resistance.

I don’t share this to create more rules around who is “allowed” to learn. I share it because I believe we can approach this knowledge with more curiosity, care, and depth.

We can learn the techniques and learn the worlds of knowledge around them.

We can ask where a practice comes from, how it has changed, who has carried it, what it means within a particular community, and what our responsibility becomes when we learn it.

Especially when we teach, practice professionally, or build businesses around traditional knowledge, context matters.

For me, keeping this knowledge alive doesn’t mean freezing it in the past. It means continuing to practice, study, question, document, teach, adapt, and transmit it with care—while remembering the communities and relationships that made its continuity possible.

There is so much for us to learn, and so much to remember.

This is the spirit I’m bringing into my upcoming workshops: not simply learning how to do a technique, but understanding enough of the medicine around it to practice with greater knowledge, respect, and intention.
