🌸 Building collective power starts with building together! Last week, we gathered in Los Angeles for our two-day Staff Organizing Training Retreat. We took time to reconnect with our purpose, reflect on the history of the domestic worker movement, and strengthen our shared vision for the future. Through conversations and activities on base building, coalition building, and movement building, we explored how each of our roles contributes to building power. We also reflected on our coalition structures and ways to deepen relationships, develop leadership, and grow our movement. We also shared a special moment celebrating Megan as our official Executive Director! 💜 We left with stronger connections and a shared commitment to dignity, justice, and collective power for domestic workers. We would like to give a thank you to our friends @EastSideCafeLA for letting use their space! — 🌸 ¡Construir poder colectivo empieza por construirlo en comunidad! La semana pasada nos reunimos en Los Ángeles para nuestro retiro de formación en organización de dos días. Nos dimos tiempo para reconectar con nuestro propósito, reflexionar sobre la historia del movimiento de trabajadoras del hogar y fortalecer nuestra visión compartida del futuro. A través de conversaciones y actividades sobre la construcción de bases, coaliciones y movimientos, exploramos cómo cada una de nuestras funciones aporta a la construcción de poder. Two years ago, some members of our network met agroecologist Saad Dagher, who spoke with us about his seed saving project and the power of food sovereignty in liberation. (Swipe to see clips of his talk!) Recently, he was elected mayor of his village. As mayor, he started initiatives that further strengthen local food sovereignty, which you can read more about on the donation page. However, the projects are hampered due to lack of resources. And so, in the spirit of international solidarity that originally brought us together, we offered to start this fundraiser. We see this small effort as a protest against the millions of our taxdollars that go towards the destruction of life in P@le$tine. Any amount is appreciated! Link to donate in bio❤️‍🔥

Oh hi, Relatives! 💜✨ Hope October has been gentle with you. I’ve been slowly coming out of my cocoon, taking a little break from holding space, and making room for rest, reflection, and care. Here’s a little of what I’ve been up to this summer and fall. 💜 💫I held space for Apapacho this fall in the 805 for our Oxnard and Ventura folks with @semillas_counseling_wellness , and this Summer for ORALÉ in Long Beach @oralelb , a community-rooted organization creating spaces for healing, connection, and collective care for immigrant communities. 💜 I also closed out the summer with a heartfelt despedida to Circle. I stewarded and facilitated Women’s Circle at ESC for the past 10 years. After a beautiful legacy of community care, ancestral healing, and collective leadership, I’ve passed the torch as it was passed down to me and am no longer stewarding this Circle. 💜This year, as part of my transition myself and the collective, will be training a new cohort of community facilitators from women’s circle to ensure that Circle remains community-led, sustainable, and accessible. As I step back from taking lead, I remain an active member of the collective and now I get to pass the torch to a new core group committed to carrying Circle forward for future generations. While my role has shifted, I’m still facilitating circles and workshops when they align with my schedule and capacity. Right now, I’m prioritizing my health and tending to my mind, body, and spirit. Learning to honor my own needs is part of the practice, too. 💜 Here’s to moving gently, honoring transitions, and making space for what’s next. ✨🫶🏽

Join @bitchimawitchh on Tuesday, September 29th for a juicy evening of co-conspiring in LA! Hosted at Eastside Café, a volunteer-run space to address social injustices that impact our east LA communities, the evening will open with poetry by local legend @itswalela, then move into a panel discussion with LATU eastside chapter founder Leonardo Vilchis and author of the new book Decolonizing Money, Julio Linaries, to discuss their perspectives of direct action to tangibly dismantle the systems of rent and the U.S. petro-dollar. As a coop worker-owner, artist and community organizer, Mara has lots of thoughts! Come be a part of the conversation. The event will run from 7-9:30. Tickets are sliding scale, free to $25. What happens when we dismantle the very structures that destroy life on Earth? Join me in a juicy evening of co-conspiring 🔥 One of my absolute favorite poets ever @itswalela will bless the space with poems & power before the panel. We must come to these topics with an open heart! 💘 Then I’ll sit with Leo and Julio in conversation, discussing their perspectives of direct action to tangibly dismantle the systems of rent and the U.S. petro-dollar. As a coop worker-owner, I have thoughts!!! Julio’s book just came out and it is such a good read. It reminded me so much of Leo’s book and when I brought that up, it turns out that there’s a section about Union de Vecino’s rent strike in 2020, that my household participated in and organized for! I live for full circle moments of revolution. 🌀 Leo is a comrade I look up to and try to bring into as many events as I can. A rare quality about LA is that so many tenants recognize their power & this seeps into strengthened care for our communities. 🌞 I am so honored to put together this event at Eastside Café también. I remember going for the first time when I moved to LA 13 years ago. @latinas4rj was an organizing home for me my first years in LA, where we hosted many workshops & storytelling events at Eastside! 💥 🦋 The Eastside Café is a volunteer-run space to address social injustices that impact our LA communities. Inspired by Mayan and Zapatista traditions, we strive for a world where people can carry out their destiny through self-determination and local autonomy. 🦋 Snacks & drinks will be provided 🌞
