Eastern Sierra weather outlooks and forecasting! Weather blog, data and forecast tools available on eastsideweather.com.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
My friends… Winter is coming this week as a warm storm with high snow levels impacts us, primarily Wednesday into Thursday. Once snow levels do crash, most of the precip will be gone.

Moving into the extended range, there are early indications of an exciting pattern emerging with a possible extended troughing pattern in the Gulf of Alaska. This is a classic El Niño look and could be around more often than not this winter.

We might be on the struggle bus at times with snow levels and temperatures, but as always, hope for snow! Read more about the storm and the outlook in the latest blog. Link in bio.

My friends… The pacific is starting to stir, and the jet stream wants to get some action going with some more unsettled weather. But right now, it appears there’s just not enough energy for a good base builder. That could change soon 👀

It’s still far too early, but some promising signals are starting to emerge, including the wet tilt from our incredible El Niño, and model guidance for November. Will it be cold enough for snow?

Find out about the upcoming weather pattern and the factors at play for California this winter in my latest blog post. Link in bio!

It’s getting a bit chilly out here. 🥶

Yup, we’re firing up the heaters, stocking up firewood, and officially feeling winter in the air.

And so is the El Niño hype machine.

We want nothing more than a killer winter here. Deep snow, endless powder days, and a season that delivers but before we start calling it the winter of the century, let’s take a look at the history.

P.S. We’re stoked to be making content all winter long with the homies @yourmammothagent and, of course, the Eastside’s official weatherman, Noé at @eastsideweather. Pray for snow 🤘🏼❄️ taken in Mammoth Lakes, California by @eastsideweather

Are we going to have a huge winter here in Mammoth Lakes, CA? Is this going to be the biggest El Niño? What even is El Niño? 🤔
Hint: not Chris Farley in that one skit

My friends… Trailfest weekend is here! Will mother nature cooperate? Fortunately, right now, the answer appears to be yes!

While we’ve had patchy smoke from the Dome Fire, this weekend, the flow appears to turn southerly / southwesterly, which should lift the heaviest smoke from the Dome Fire to the north of Mammoth! Let your lungs be spared! Some dynamic weather will keep things a bit cooler and gustier this weekend though, with winds over 30MPH out of the southwest for Mammoth Mountain.

Whether it is the judicious kindness of mother nature or a lucky coincidence, a shortwave trough should come in Sunday evening into Monday, after Trailfest wraps up. This trough could bring in just enough moisture for a dusting to an inch or two of snow above 9-10k feet for parts of the Sierra. Elevated uncertainty remains around how much moisture and how far north it ends up, as the tropical pacific is imparting uncertainty and unleashing its fury at the moment.

If you are running, have a great run!

My friends… There is no better indication that winter is fast approaching than a dusting of snow on our highest peaks! That’s what’s in store for us tomorrow as a weak shortwave trough moves over California bringing scattered thunderstorms and snow levels over 11k. Totals will be locally variable, but isolated pockets may get slightly more than just a dusting. Most of the precip is concentrated along the southern sierra crest.

After this, beautiful fall weather returns. The Dome Fire continues to burn in Yosemite National Park, reaching 3042 acres and 15% containment. As high pressure builds in, activity could increase and there could be smoke impacts on the Eastside.

My friends… The Dome Fire started yesterday in Yosemite National park in a stretch of rugged and remote terrain, 30 miles west of Mammoth. It has since grown rapidly to 1,100 acres. Gusty winds out of the southwest associated with a passing trough may promote further rapid spread this week, as crews work to contain the fire, which poses no immediate threat to any infrastructure. This fire is burning in a pocket of terrain with no recent fire activity, although it is bounded on several sides by some burn areas. (photos 1-3)

As of this morning, smoke is being sent up to Bridgeport, which is downstream of the prevailing wind direction. Smoke may continue to impact the eastside while this fire burns nearby. (photo 4)

Next week, a weak shortwave trough may move over California, bringing more blustery conditions and very weak showers to parts of the Sierra. This will do very little to help out the Dome Fire. (photos 5-6)

Longer range more weak troughing may continue out west, which could continue the story of cooler temps, with occasional chances for weak showers.

My friends… If you’ve been following my discussions, you’ll know that I’ve been talking about the possibility for tropical moisture making its way out here by the end of August.. Well it now looks quite likely that the Sierra Nevada and Black Rock Desert / Great Basin will be impacted by a plume of remnant tropical moisture from Tropical Storm Iselle this Thursday Eve - Saturday AM. Burners Beware!

Friday should feature steady rain and unusual moisture levels, with the heaviest precipitation appearing to fall just to our north, spilling over to the BRC right before entrance day…

Longer range, Eastern Pacific hurricane activity appears likely to continue, which means we may have more chances for remnant moisture coming our way. The CPC, long range guidance, and myself are in agreement for an above average outlook for California and the Southwest in September.

Note: the coming totals look relatively unremarkable by midwinter standards, however at a time when average precipitation for much of the state is near zero, this is certainly something worth paying attention to!

My friends… The monsoon will intensify this week as another surge of moisture and troughing pattern impacts California. Beginning tomorrow, afternoon thunderstorms will be somewhat widespread over the Sierra, lasting until Friday. Wednesday and Thursday look the most active right now.

On Wednesday night when the trough builds in, much lower temps will arrive, but thunderstorms may remain more active through the night, including an elevated risk of dry lightning strikes along Sierra Foothills areas and along isolated coastal areas.

The exact placements of the heaviest downpours will be hard to predict, but the usual risks are associated with this pattern: strong rainfall, hail, lightning and thunder, gusty outflow winds, and localized flash flooding. Outdoor enthusiasts are advised to watch the sky and be prepared to descend before thunder roars!

The trough should bring in substantially lower temps. Longer range, the monsoon looks likely to temporarily retract, while a flow pattern favorable for moisture transport into the Southwest remains established. This could occasionally lead to more surges of moisture into the Eastern Sierra… Time will tell!

My friends… Monsoonal moisture has returned to the area, which will lead to increasing thunderstorm coverage this weekend. Thunderstorms will be scattered in nature, mainly in the afternoons. Exact placements and timings as well as precipitation amounts will be hard to predict. Some areas could see hail, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy downpours.

Isolated storms will remain possible through the next week, with elevated activity possibly ramping up at the end of next week. This will coincide with a west coast trough, bringing much lower temps than recently. The heatwave is gone for now!

Longer range, the monsoon is generally expected to remain active with occasional intrusions into the Sierra!
