Time is flying.

Today marks T E N years since I released my @JohnMayer documentary ‘Someday I’ll Fly’ (April 6th, 2014).

What started out as a music video for ‘The Age of Worry’ quickly grew into a feature length biography on the musician I’ve most admired since 2003 at the age of 15.

The doc took me six months of work including: research, writing, archiving, editing, audio editing/mixing, grading and VFX.

Mayer saw the film in August of 2014 and wrote me a letter. We met in London in 2019 during his UK tour where we discussed the doc and John’s career, he was incredible to both me and my fiancée, a total class act.

It’s no surprise that his name is being thrown around in the ‘Greatest guitarist’ discussions. An ‘Artist’s artist’ with such versatility to contribute to any genre or style of music. It’s great to see him being discovered by a new generation of fans. I think those of us who were around for those early albums/shows had an inkling he would stick around for years to come. Here’s to many more Mayer records and live shows.

Thanks to all of you who have watched and shared ‘Someday I’ll Fly’ over the last DECADE(!!) and to all the like-minded people I’ve met along the way. JM has the best fans (especially in 🇧🇷). It’s been a trip.

I’ll be sharing a little something in the next few days. It’s related to JM’s early work and I think Mayerheads will get a kick out of it.

N̶e̶v̶e̶r̶ meet your heroes. 🎸🕊️

What a terrific weekend talking all things movies at @ftloscifi where we showcased a preview of our upcoming RoboCop documentary - It went down a treat! ⠀
We even got to meet and interview Peter Weller (@drpeterweller) AKA RoboCop himself live on stage 🎬🚔
⠀
That moment when ‘Alex Murphy’ looks at you and says “Your first name is Eastwood? That’s cool as hell, man” then gives you a fist bump 👊🏻❗️
⠀
Such a top experience. Thanks to @hail_leviathan, @amyparkinsontv and @dansphoto for taking good care of us. Also the fine folks who stopped us to talk about our film. I could talk sci-fi all day.
⠀
A solid way to head out of 2019!

ROBOCOP 2 4Ks arrived with a smash! 🦾💿

Complete with our audio commentary.

🇺🇸 Steelbook & Collector’s edition from @screamfactoryofficial.
🇩🇪 Steelbook & Mediabook Edition from @capelight_pictures.

These sets are slick, and the 4K transfer from the original 35mm negative is stunning, both sharply crisp whilst maintaining that all-important film grain. The neon-soaked night scenes in particular with Robo’s suit sheen look incredible, AND that Randy Moore artillery sounds all so sweet.

Best of luck especially to those German fans trying to make any sense of our Yorkshire, Brum and Cardiffian ramblings on the commentary. 🔉

Another JAWSome time aboard the ORCA, with the old man and my boy @stu_kirwan.🦈🎬

The owner Jon, kindly invited us back for the sequel, so we got him some bespoke baked bites because, “Amity, as you know, means friendship.”

My dad saw JAWS at the cinema 7 times opening week in 1975. That explains so much… taken in Conwy Marina by @easty7

Throwing it back to 2006 for the Mayerheads. 💿💎

On this day 20 years ago, @JohnMayer’s CONTINUUM made its debut on STAR 98.7 FM radio (ahead of the official 12th of Sept release). This gave a bunch of us eager fans an early opportunity to hear what is now considered by many as JM’s seminal album.
His introspective blues/soul/pop/R&B-infused hybrid, which marked his first full foray into producing, alongside Steve Jordan.

I remember burning the ‘First play’ onto CD for a long car journey with my dad to test out the route and commute to my university campus, as I was just about to leave home for three years to start uni life. We inhaled that album (plus Mayer’s track commentary and that earworm of a 98.7 watermark!) over the four-hour round trip.

Exactly two months later, October 23rd (my 19th birthday), I got to witness my first ever live Mayer show, at The Forum in London to a sold-out crowd, from the front row, alongside my dad and two hometown pals (I’m in the white hoodie).

The first ever song we heard live was ‘Belief’ (my fav from Continuum), which JM played on his iconic BLK1 Strat. The venue was a packed and sweaty dive of 1100 people, and the sound was piercingly sharp with all those familiar John Mayer guitar tones. The man, band and crowd were all on fire.
Vivid memories. Friends made. Indelible night.

One of the show highlights was John riffing at the start of ‘Vultures’ with a ‘Wrapped Around Your Finger’ tease (SEE VID).

The CONTINUUM world tour was only just taking flight at that time, and songs like ‘I Don’t Trust Myself’, ‘Stop This Train’, ‘Slow Dancing’, ‘Vultures’, and ‘Gravity’ were already on their way to being setlist staples.

“First record, get ‘em in.
Second record, make ‘em think.
Third record, crush ‘em!”

Who else was around for the CONTINUUM release, tour, tape shares, LOCAL 83 fan-club and the MSM & Score1More4Me message board days? by @easty7

Took a trip to the stunning seaside town of Conwy in Wales with my chum @mattexton85 for a guided tour of the world’s first full-scale ORCA replica from JAWS.

Since the original production ORCA and stunt boat, ORCA II are sadly no more, this was an incredible opportunity to aboard the shark-hunting vessel, and we were in our absolute element on a living, creaking, rocking JAWS museum.

Props to the boat’s captain and superfan Jon Fieldhouse who’s spent 3 years building and amassing screen accurate pieces and ultra grailed artefacts to populate the boat with. His attention to detail and JAWS knowledge is exemplary. He’s also a marine & shark conservationist. A lovely bloke and inspiration.

Was super happy to hear that Mr Spielberg is set to pay Jon and his ORCA a visit next week. 🦈🟡🟡🟡

This week marks 39 years since ROBOCOP shot onto the big screen and 10 (TEN!!) years since we began production on our doc series ROBODOC, which details the making of the sci-fi masterpiece, with help from 60+ of the film’s cast & crew.

Here’s two grown men waxing lyrical about our first memories of ROBOCOP, getting hooked on the iconic cyborg, and how the doc series came to be.

GRAIL [𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗔𝗖𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗗] and a sentimental one at that.

This is an ultra-rare crew cap issued to the post-production team when making TERMINATOR 2 back in 90/91.

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to several folks who crewed on the movie, including film editor Mark Goldblatt, discussing his ACE work on T1 & T2, and RoboCop (as 2nd unit director.) Mark is a razor-sharp editor who mastered both film and digital editing. His work on T2 alongside Conrad Buff IV & Richard A. Harris remains the gold standard for what Mark would call “E-motion picture editing.”

TERMINATOR 2 was released 35 years ago this week.
As an avid post-prod nut, I still fanboy over the cutting-edge aspects of this film, including its pioneering post-production methods, so this hat now hangs proudly in my office as a small piece of big movie history.
Here’s hoping it gives off some of that Goldblatt, Harris & Buff magic on my timeline.

Also pictured are some other recent Termi gets to make the cut. I’ll be back. 💀✂️🎞️

Before John Mayer’s hit song ‘NEON’ there was a different track originally titled ‘NEON’ recorded back in the summer of 1996 when JM was 18, 5 years before he signed with Columbia Records and released his debut studio album in 2001.

🎵: ‘SOMETHING LIKE NEON’ - 1996

Since releasing my John Mayer documentary ‘Someday I’ll Fly’ back in 2014, I’ve had the fortune of speaking with some of Mayer’s band members, both old & new, including Joe Beleznay & Sam Morrissey from his first hometown bands ‘Another Roadside Attraction’ (1994) and ‘Villanova Junction’ (1995).
The guys shared memories & materials with me, including: photos, cover art, liner notes & several tape recordings; one of which was this song titled ‘NEON’ (Later titled ‘SOMETHING LIKE NEON’ to make a distinction between the two)

BAND:
@johnmayer: Vocals / Guitar / Drums
@joebeleznay: Vocals
@sam.morrissey: Bass

EQUIPMENT:
Fender Guitars, Pearl Drums, Yamaha Bass, Peavey Amps.

RECORDED:
Summer 1996 on a DAT machine in Mayer’s parents garage in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Mixed at Mayer Sound Studios (JM’s home)

Since ‘Someday I’ll Fly’ just turned 10, I wanted to do something for fellow John Mayer fans. ‘SOMETHING LIKE NEON’ showcases themes that can be found in Mayer’s later work when his career took flight just 5 years later in 2001.
As someone who puts JM’s ‘NEON’ right up there with the very best songs; hearing the evolution of this motif is really cool.

THE HISTORY OF 🎶 ‘NEON’ 🎶

1996 - First known recording to use the ‘NEON’ motif, performed with Joe Beleznay & Sam Morrissey.

1998 - Mayer forms a duo called ‘Lo-Fi Masters’ with ex-Berklee classmate, Clay Cook, who helps John write the music for the new song ‘NEON’.

1999 - ‘Inside Wants Out’ EP features the first official acoustic release of ‘NEON’. Also Included on the first run of EPs was the instrumental electric guitar mix titled ‘NEON 12:47 AM’ which had a different tone lyrically.

2001 - ‘Room For Squares’ JM’s debut album, features ‘NEON’ with full band.

I wanna say a huge thanks to Sam & Joe for trusting me with their stories & archive.

I hope fans get a kick out of this track like I did 🎸
