In celebration of World Piano Day, we sat down with Company Pianist Western-Li Summerton, who will perform live on stage for Yuri Possokhov’s world premiere, Dunayevsky Pas de Deux as part of Golden Hour.

From sweeping, lyrical moments to fiery, technical passages, Isaak Dunayevsky’s music brings a powerful emotional range that challenges both musician and dancer. With live piano accompaniment, every performance becomes a real-time collaboration—shaped by movement, breath, and connection on stage.

“Each dancer is nuanced… I examine how the music can support those nuances and their choreographic needs.”

Experience that connection for yourself during Golden Hour, featuring works by Yuri Possokhov, Claudia Schreier, Val Caniparoli, and Christopher Wheeldon.

📍 April 3–5, 2026 at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre

In Creases

Being one of the first ballets I performed in when I first came to Atlanta in 2022, I was ecstatic to bring it back to kick off our 25-26 season. The thrill of the stunning choreography by @justin_peck set to the intricate music of @philipglass holds a special place in my heart.

A huge thank you to my fellow pianist and collaborator @rachelnmusic, truly an amazing artist to work with. Another huge thanks to @rory_hohenstein for staging this ballet and constantly making me a better ballet pianist. Bravo to these two amazing casts of silver surfers 🏄‍♂️ 🏄‍♂️ 🏄‍♂️ by @eastywinterton

Performing Helgi Tómasson’s 7 for Eight these past few weeks has truly been a joy. I have felt so fulfilled as a pianist working with our @atlantaballet dancers and orchestra, and am filled with gratitude to have been apart of this process.

Thanks to @gennadinedviginofficial for the opportunity to work on this ballet, Anita Paciotti, @angelaagresti, and @epermuy for their time staging and rehearsing this work, @maestromcphee and @t_maesdwo for their conducting, collaboration, and camaraderie, and to our dancers and orchestra who constantly make me a better artist. Also honored to have been on the same program as @claudiaschreier’s new Rite of Spring; what an epic and visceral work to behold.

Big news: @angelaagresti and I are engaged 💍

No social media post could fully depict how much Angela means to me, but I’ll try. Anyone who knows Angela will tell you that she brings light with her wherever she goes. She inspires kindness in others, and finds the good in all things. I’m grateful to have experienced this light as her best friend, her pianist, and now as her fiancé. Cheers to a future with my special person; swipe to see a very special photobooth progression. by @eastywinterton
