The 2026 theme for Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness Week (BIEDAW) is Redefining ‘Wellness’: Stories we’re sold about health and our bodies. An estimated 1 in 10 Australians will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime, and dieting is the single biggest behavioural risk.

The diet industry preys on people feeling ‘not enough’, this week is a chance to say body acceptance is for everyone.

Diet and wellness companies make millions by pressuring us to conform to narrow, unattainable body standards. The 2026 BIEDAW theme asks us to question: Who really benefits from diet and wellness culture? And how can you define wellness to truly benefit you?

Through storytelling, education, and community connection, we are amplifying voices of body liberation and acceptance, highlighting the skills people use to filter out toxic messaging, and providing resources that empower all people in Australia to build healthier relationships with food, movement, and their bodies.

We stand for a broader and more inclusive understanding of wellness – one that values mental wellbeing, body respect, and supportive or joyful relationships with food and movement.

Because true wellness isn’t about changing your body - it’s about living fully in the one you have and reaching out for support when you need it.

If you’re worried about yourself or someone else, contact Eating Disorders Queensland for support. by @eatingdisordersqld

Today, members of the Eating Disorders Alliance (EDA) met with Federal Parliamentarians in Canberra to advocate for meaningful action on eating disorder reform, during Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness Week (7-13 September).

Our message to the Government is clear: Australia already has the roadmap. The National Eating Disorders Strategy 2023-2033 outlines the system of care required and the actions needed to achieve it. Through the One Voice Campaign, we are calling for practical, evidence-informed investments to protect effective services, address gaps in community-based care, strengthen workforce capacity, improve service navigation, and support earlier intervention.

These are achievable reforms that will help ensure more people can access the support they need, when they need it.

We thank the members of Parliamentary Friends of Eating Disorder Awareness, including Co-Chairs @zalisteggall @andrewwallacemp68 and @susantemplemanmp , for their ongoing support and commitment to raising awareness and driving change.

Last Friday saw EDQ attend the Queensland Mental Health Week 2026 Cairns Community Gathering at the Healing Gardens on the Esplanade; opposite Cairns Hospital. As many parts of our city gathered, staff, clients, carers, students and friends we shared the common goals of chatting about mental health and breaking down stigma.

Mandy, Sharday and Lauren (EDQ) along with Tarnia, CNC at NQuEDS (North Queensland Eating Disorder Service) shared a stall and we and were able to talk about the step up/step down program joining our two services providing continuum of care for clients both as inpatient and in the community.

Our stall had constant engagement of people sharing their own journeys, carers expressing their stories and general interest in our work in the eating disorder sector.

It was great to see Laura, one of our previous lived experience workers drop in to say hello! Cairns @tafeqld Teacher, Becca bought her Certificate IV MH students to the event and we were able to chat about student placements and lived experience pathways.

Overall, it was a busy chatting day, with connections and referrals; all the while Cairns weather did not disappoint; showing off our beautiful landscapes. Many thanks to Kate and @cairnshinterlandhhs s + @qldhealth staff for organising another successful event.

We look forward to 2027! by @eatingdisordersqld

⚠️ Less than 1%.

That's what we've been asking the @ausgov to commit from the total Health Services budget, to strengthen the eating disorder system of care. 🩺

This #MentalHealthMonth, themed 'Together We Thrive', Australia’s leading eating disorder organisations are once again uniting as the Eating Disorders Alliance to highlight unfunded gaps in the eating disorder system of care. 👥

Without this commitment, Australia risks losing key parts of its emerging eating disorder system of care. Learn more via our website. 💭

The Eating Disorders Alliance is comprised of @anzaed1, The Australian Eating Disorders Research and Translation Centre, @thebutterflyfoundation, @edanzsupport, @edfaustralia, @edneuroaus, @eatingdisordersqld, @eatingdisordersvictoria, @_theembracecollective, @insideout_institute and @nedc_australia. by @eatingdisordersqld

💚 National Carers Week (11-17 October) 💚

This week, we’re recognising the more than 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care and support to a loved one.

The 2026 theme, “Care for a carer: Making carers visible”, is a reminder that carers play a vital role in our communities and that they need support too.

At Eating Disorders Queensland, we know that carers and key supports are often at the heart of eating disorder recovery. Whether you’re a parent, sibling, partner, friend or another significant support person, your role matters.

That’s why we offer free, Queensland-wide support services for carers and key supports, including individual coaching, workshops, peer support groups and community connection opportunities designed to provide information, skills, support and empowerment.

To every carer in our community, thank you for all that you do. 💚

Find out more about our carer services via the link in our bio.

Lived experience is expertise.

This World Mental Health Day, we recognise the vital knowledge, insight and leadership of people with lived experience of mental health challenges.

People with lived experience understand what works, what doesn't, and what needs to change in our mental health system. Their voices should not only be heard, they should be embedded in decision-making, service design, implementation and evaluation.

Meaningful engagement goes beyond sharing personal stories. It means partnering with people with lived experience as equal contributors from the very beginning. This is central to EDQs mission. Because mental health policies, services and supports are stronger when they are shaped by the people who use them.

As we work towards a more compassionate, rights-based and person-centred mental health system, we must continue to champion the principle: nothing about us without us.

Today, and every day, we celebrate lived experience expertise and the real change it creates.

Three awards. One incredible community. 💙

We are incredibly honoured to have received three awards at the Queensland Mental Health Awards 2026:

🏆 Jude Bugeja: Lived Experience Excellence Award
 🏆 Not-for-Profit Organisation Award: Large
 🏆 Earle Duus Overarching Award

As an organisation built on the voices and expertise of people with lived and living experience, this recognition means so much to us. We are proud to be innovators, leaders, and advocates in the eating disorder and mental health sector, always striving to create services and supports that are informed by the people who use them.

To our community, staff, volunteers, partners and supporters, thank you. This achievement belongs to all of us.

A huge thank you to the incredible members of our community who donated door prizes for our Art, Hope & Recovery Open Night on Tuesday. 💙

@graymindpsychology generously gifted a wellbeing package filled with self-reflection tools, a tee and a 'Healthy Mind' cap, which was warmly received by one lucky attendee. 🧢

Anna from @chop_haircutters donated a beautiful selection of hair care products that found a happy new home with a longstanding member of our community. 💇‍♀️

We also gave away two copies of Renourish, an inspiring book by EDQ Board Member Dr @warrenkward and lived experience advocate @lexi.crouch . Fittingly, the winners attended the event together. A new book club might be on the horizon! 📚

There's still time to experience the exhibition. Visit @gladstoneroadstudios before Saturday to explore powerful artworks that highlight the important role creativity can play in eating disorder recovery. 🎨 by @eatingdisordersqld
