Eating disorders can affect anyone, but early intervention and access to the right treatment can make a real difference.

While in Cairns, I had the opportunity to visit Eating Disorders Queensland to hear firsthand about the work they’re doing to support people experiencing eating disorders and their families.

Eating disorders affect people from all walks of life, and recovery requires understanding, compassion and the right support.

It was wonderful to attend the Parliamentary Friends of Eating Disorders event at Queensland Parliament and catch up with Belinda Chelius, CEO of Eating Disorders Queensland.

Hearing from lived experience advocate Lexi Crouch and psychiatrist Dr Warren Ward was a powerful reminder of the importance of accessible treatment, early support and a compassionate approach to recovery.

Eating disorders affect not only individuals, but also the families, friends and carers around them. We must continue working towards greater awareness and a more connected system of care.

I had such a beautiful night at mental health week Held in Community: An Exhibition of Art, Hope and Recovery by @eatingdisordersqld members of the Eating Disorders Queensland (EDQ) community, including people with lived/living experience of eating disorders, carers, family members, and loved ones, this exhibition shares personal stories through art, creativity, and lived experience.

Eating disorders can be incredibly isolating. This exhibition offers a welcoming space to connect, reflect and learn, while helping to reduce stigma and build understanding within the community.

Visitors can explore original artworks, read lived-experience stories, listen to a song created by EDQ community members, and access information about eating disorders, recovery, and support services.

Whether you have a personal connection to eating disorders, love local art, support mental health awareness, or are simply curious to learn more, everyone is welcome.

This exhibition is free and open to the public at @gladstoneroadstudios

What’s it like at a conference dedicated to eating disorders and improving care and support for those impacted?

At the recent Australia and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders Conference @anzaed1, hundreds of dedicated professionals came together and just some of the activities included....

🦋 @wandi.nerida ran workshops on its lived experience embedded model of care, and the importance of weight-inclusive, neuro-affirming treatment approaches.

🎙️ Butterfly’s Let’s Talk podcast host (and long-time sector leader!) Dr Beth Shelton was awarded an ANZAED Lifetime Achievement Award.

☎️ Shared insights from the Butterfly National Helpline, with increasing numbers of first-time contacts, and positive outcomes from our Next Steps Outpatient Program.

🥳 Celebrated @wandi.nerida 5-year anniversary with eating disorder clinicians, and connected with advocates, researchers and supporters.

A special thank you to presenters Ayesha, Callula, Brigitte, Jim, Sarah, Hannah, Carly, Dani and Amarnie – and to the team at ANZAED for bringing us all together. 💙

Last week, during Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week, NEDC joined our colleagues in the Eating Disorders Alliance in Canberra for the Parliamentary Friends of Eating Disorder Awareness event.

Thank you to the Parliamentary Friends co-chairs, Zali Steggall OAM MP (@zalisteggall), Andrew Wallace MP (@andrewwallacemp68) and Susan Templeman MP (@susantemplemanmp), for hosting the event and their sustained cross-party attention to eating disorder awareness.

We were also pleased to be joined by Emma McBride MP (@emmamcbridemp), Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, alongside parliamentarians from across the political spectrum, to discuss what is needed to strengthen Australia’s eating disorder system of care.

Together, the Alliance presented the One Voice Ask, calling on the Federal Government to invest $28.7 million to strengthen eating disorder prevention, treatment and support across Australia.

Australia has a coordinated and increasingly connected eating disorder sector, with a growing range of services, programs, professional networks and lived experience leadership. We also have a clear roadmap: the National Eating Disorders Strategy 2023–2033, developed with the sector and setting out 141 Priority Actions to make a stepped system of care a reality across the country.

Too many people are still unable to find the support they need, when and where they need it. For families and supporters, navigating care can be confusing and exhausting, particularly when the connections between services are unclear.

The EDA’s One Voice Ask aligns with the Strategy and calls for sustained investment to strengthen the workforce, build on proven services, improve navigation and access to care, and raise community understanding of eating disorders.

Eating disorders are serious, treatable illnesses. With continued coordinated action and investment, we can ensure people can access the right support, at the right time, wherever they live.

An estimated 250,000 Queenslanders are living with an eating disorder, which is why breaking down stigma is so important.

I was honoured to join Eating Disorders Queensland for Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week, exploring this year’s theme of “Redefining Wellness” and reflecting on the pressures around body image and why there’s much more to being healthy than how someone looks.

I also had the chance to check out some of the powerful artwork created by clients and hear from Belinda and the team about the important work they do supporting Queenslanders with eating disorders, and their families and carers, on the road to recovery.

“No bullsh*t diets!”

It’s a refrain my gal pals and I sing every year as part of my powerhouse friend’s annual Feministmas (Feminist Christmas) celebrations.

We know diet and wellness companies make millions by pressuring us to conform to narrow, unattainable body standards.

It’s time to push back and advocate for body respect over body shame, nourishment over restriction, and authentic living over appearance ideals.

Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Australia’s national awareness week, held annually in the first full week of September. And I was very pleased to catch up with leaders in the sector including out very own Belinda Chelius from Eating Disorders Queensland.
