Jaggery is an ancient sweetener that originated in South Asia 3000 years ago. It is unrefined — meaning it is unprocessed and contains higher nutrient density. It is artisanal, made in small batches and absolutely no chemicals are used.

❗️While sugar in any form (white, shades brown) is hyper refined where all nutrient content is stripped and a lot of chemicals incl. bone char are used in the process of refinement.

Masala Chai Tres Leches 🍦

We’ve wanted to make a Tres Leches soft serve for a while, and with Hispanic Heritage Month, it felt like a good time to finally work on it.

Then @eatsourcery dropped off some of her masala chai + jaggery at the bakery last week, and it inspired me to bring the two together. I thought the warm chai spices would be a nice contrast to the delicate, milky Tres Leches.

Our bakers Stephany and Marcos helped us get the Tres Leches part right - from the idea to the recipe.

And as always, everything in the cup is made in-house.

This week at Lisbonata.

This is a market bag from India.
Growing up, it was a common sight to see people carrying them filled to the brim with fresh produce. My mother and grandmother carried them, and even wove them together with their friends, kinda like a weaving circle.

We reworked these bags in partnership with a weaver in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Our weaver partner, Kiruthiga picked up weaving as a hobby, ended up loving it and started her own small business, that’s how we found her. She weaves every bag in a traditional box knot style, it takes her 4-5 days to finish one. Bags hanging in a market place by @eatsourcery

Bhavna is bringing serious home-grown Indian flavors to Good Girl Grocer! Growing up in South India, she spent her childhood summers at her grandmother Salomi’s house. Everyday familial rituals were strongly centered around food: Bhavna’s mother dedicated Sundays to sambar, and her dad made occasions extra-special with his famous biryani. The spiced aromas filled the air with flavor and love, and she continues their legacy through Sourcery.

Bhavna now calls Park Slope home, but found herself missing the vibrant flavors of home. The big-box retailers in the US couldn’t compete with flat, stale, so-called spices. Bhavna knew she could do better for the industry’s overworked and underpaid farmers, and Sourcery was created.

Come try @eatsourcery’s Artisinal Jaggery today in-store from 12-3pm!
