What even is pumpkin spice? Every year we all see the ads pop up everywhere. Not just Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte—but Pumpkin Spice Everything.

I wondered not only what was in pumpkin spice, but if it could be made well—with ingredients that didn’t leave me wondering.

That’s where Bhavna Kolakaluri and her artisanal spice brand Sourcery @eatsourcery come in.

Bhavna and I met over a year ago. As a native of Southern India, she has visited local farms and developed relationships with them to source the freshest possible spices.

A few months ago, she came to the bakery with samples of spices that I had never smelled in my life! So deeply flavorful and fresh—like mace flower and varieties of black pepper. (Did you know mace is the outer shell of nutmeg and looks like a flame?)

We agreed on an idea for an improved pumpkin spice that would rival any Starbucks latte. We met a few times at the bakery, testing spice blends, and dreamt up a finished product that I am obsessed with.

Sourcery works directly with local family farms and sources heirloom spices at their freshest. Every spice in this blend comes from a farm in India, Sri Lanka, or Nepal. The cinnamon is from a regenerative farm in Sri Lanka, the ginger is from a smallholder cooperative in Nepal.

This pumpkin spice blend has cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg, black pepper, and mace. It is sweet and floral with a zesty warmth from the ginger and savory notes from mace. We love using it in our gluten-free, vegan Pumpkin Spice Donuts and Kabocha Olive Oil loaf, and will be adding it to our pumpkin pies in November.

It can also make a real pumpkin spice latte if you add it to coffee, or serve as a savory sprinkle on fall veggies before roasting. Available in our baked goods, and for purchase online at @eatsourcery.

Thank you for the warmest welcome, Bankers Hill! Huge thank you to @bik.lun and @skyhigh_caphevacauchuyen for being apart of this special day, and supply the most delish bites and coffee.

I’ve been in deep feels the last 48 hours. Pinch me moments. A dream. My dream finally coming true after so, so long. Seeing it filled people who eagerly welcomed made me so grateful. This is just the beginning!

More to do until the Grand Opening on November 20th (more details to come!) but already looking forward to celebrating this next chapter with you all. ‘Till then— come get a bit of reprieve from the heat with the AC, say hello, chat cookbooks, and sit in the cozy window corner with a book! ❤️
