🚨 ERIC’S LAW IS OFFICIALLY LAW! 🦋

This week we celebrate a powerful step toward making unseen disabilities seen in the District of Columbia.

I’m incredibly proud that the Eric’s Law resolution I brought before the @dcsboe was unanimously passed in May, helping lay the groundwork for this legislation.

Thank you to Councilmembers @cmzparker5 and @cmlewisgeorgew4 for introducing Eric’s Law and to Councilmember @cmcharlesallen for being a champion as this legislation moved through committee and toward final passage.

And most importantly, thank you @eric_grantham for your vision 🙏🏾

This is what advocacy looks like: listening to families, bringing their experiences to the table, building support, and turning an idea into lasting policy.

Eric’s Law will help make sure that people with hidden and non-apparent disabilities have a way to communicate their needs and receive understanding when they need it most.

One more step toward a DC where we see people for who they are and make space for everyone.

So y’all know I love a good field trip and this one to the @eascarpenters Training Facility did NOT disappoint. 🦺🔨

We got into the nuts and bolts of carpentry careers, apprenticeship pathways, and the life changing skills our students need to build a future and literally build projects like RFK.

Career pathways aren’t just about getting a job. They’re about building skills, confidence, and economic opportunity.

Let’s make sure DC students can see themselves in every pathway and have a real path to get there. 🛠️ taken in Carpenters Local 197 by @eboni_rosedc

Playtime just got an upgrade! 🎉🛝

Today we celebrated the opening of DC Scholars’ brand-new playground — and the joy was REAL!

Big smiles. Big energy. Lots of running, laughing, climbing, and playing.

Because our kids deserve safe spaces to learn, grow, and just be kids.

Congratulations, DC Scholars! Let the fun begin! 💛 taken in DC Scholars Community Schools by @eboni_rosedc

DC is one step closer to making Eric’s Law a reality! 🦋

I’m ecstatic to share that Eric’s Law has been voted out of committee and passed its first vote before the full DC Council!

Here’s a quick look back at my testimony before the committee as we take this step forward. 💛

This legislation is about making unseen disabilities seen. As the proud sister of @angelaftercancer 💕 a breast cancer survivor, I know that not every disability or medical condition is visible. Eric’s Law would help people communicate when they may need additional patience, understanding, or support to law enforcement.

This is about dignity, safety, and making sure our community members are seen, heard, and treated with compassion, just like @eric_grantham envisioned. Continued thanks to co-introducers @cmzparker5 and @cmlewisgeorgew4 and committee chair @cmcharlesallen for shepherding this through committee.

Earlier this week, we had a great turnout for our East of the River Conversation for Families! 💛

It was a wonderful opportunity to listen, learn, and connect with families about how quickly technology is changing in our schools and what it means for our students, parents, and educators.
As technology continues to evolve, it’s important that families have a voice in the conversation and the tools to keep up.

Thank you to all the families who joined us and to our partners @drlajoyjlaw @dcpave ElectEd @ward7ed @barddcpto @digitalequitydc @dc_charters @lovelylisahaughton @strongschoolsdc who helped make this conversation possible! Together, we’re building stronger schools and communities, one conversation at a time.

A diploma should prepare you for LIFE, not just graduation day. At our September meeting, we took a big step toward making that a reality. 🎓

I’m especially proud that our new high school graduation requirements recognize the things students need to thrive after high school, including:

💰 Financial literacy — because every young person should understand money before they enter adulthood.

🛠️ Career & Technical Education — recognizing the value of what we used to call vocational education and expanding pathways to good careers.

🌎 Language access — making sure multilingual students have opportunities to build on the languages they already know.

🤝🏾 Community service — including opportunities for students to serve their communities while getting paid for their work.

This is about giving students more pathways, more choices, and more ways to demonstrate what they know and can do.

I’m proud of this vote and grateful to have chaired the Taskforce alongside @henderson4ward5 including @osse.dc, the students, educators, families, advocates, employers, labor leaders, and colleagues who helped push this work forward.

DC students deserve a diploma that prepares them for whatever comes next. 💛

A peek at what investing in our kids looks like. 🏈📚❤️

Yesterday in #Ward7, we celebrated the launch of the @commanders Youth Academy Junior Academy Pilot @kippdcschools in Capitol View with @cityschoolscollaborative bringing together academics, athletics, mentorship, and opportunity for our young people.

And the energy was EVERYTHING! From students running plays on their newly refurbished field to painting and connecting with Commanders rookies, the day was about more than football. It was about making sure our children have access to experiences, relationships, and resources that help them see what’s possible.

As a proud Ward 7 representative, I’m excited to see this investment in our community — and especially excited about what it can mean as this pilot grows and reaches even more DC students.

When we invest in our children, we invest in the future of our entire city. 💫

Thank you to the Washington Commanders Foundation, KIPP DC, the Harris family, the players, educators, and everyone who helped bring this vision to life.

Ward 7 is ready. Our kids are ready. #RaiseHail taken in KIPP DC Smilow Campus by @eboni_rosedc

A quick Labor Day throwback to a 2022 WTU Rally, one of many, fighting for a fair contract. ✊🏾

Labor Day may mean a long weekend for many of us, but it exists because workers organized, fought, and demanded better.

The labor movement gave us the 8-hour workday, weekends, overtime protections, safer workplaces, the right to organize, and so much more.

Here’s the thing: labor rights aren’t something we inherit. They’re something we have to protect and continue to fight for.

I’ve stood with DC educators because when we fight for teachers, we’re also fighting for our students, our schools, and the future of public education.

The future of labor must be about more than protecting what we’ve won. It must be about building an economy where every worker can afford to live, raise a family, care for themselves, and retire with dignity.

So this Labor Day, I’m honoring the workers who fought before us, standing with workers fighting today, and ready to keep fighting for what comes next.

Because progress has never been given. It has been organized for.

Happy Labor Day. ✊🏾💛 taken in Freedom Plaza by @eboni_rosedc

Our children deserve better. Period. 🚧

This is not the first time #Ward7 students have been asked to accept less than what they deserve. It is not the first time our communities have had to push, question, advocate, and demand that the District deliver on its promises.

But we need to make it the last time.

School started August 24th. Our children should have walked into a school that was safe, finished, clean, and ready to welcome them. Construction should not still be happening around students, educators, and families after the first week of school.

I will continue to ask the hard questions and hold our agencies accountable because this is bigger than one building. All of our children deserve safe, high-quality schools. Ward 7 deserves the best.

We should not have to fight for the basics. We should not have to accept less.

Our kids deserve better. We owe it to them to make sure they get it. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. This is not good enough for our kids or any kids. taken in Kenilworth Elementary by @eboni_rosedc
