“How well does over-ear hearing protection work with FR Drape Cap and Helmet Brim? Will the mesh compromise the seal of my earpro?”

Recently we’ve received variations of this question in comments and messages.

These concerns mirror our own poor experiences using electronic headsets with traditional hats.

One of the key design considerations of both the Drape Cap (slide 1) and Helmet Brim (slide 2) was ensuring they could work seamlessly with modern electronic hearing protection.

This starts with some basic elements both caps share:
1) The FR mesh material is lightweight, thin, and made for next to skin use. It compresses under gel ear-cups and does not add bulk or create gaps.

2) The crown is made of completely flat material. There are no buttons or metal grommets which could create pressure points.

3) The hatband is constructed such that it lays flat, particularly against the temples. This means that gel cups easily ‘bridge’ the hatband without breaking their seal.

4) Both caps include loops for routing earplug lanyards, which accommodates systems such as the Ops-Core AMP which feature in-ear near field magnetically induced (NFMI) audio drivers. This routing system also prevents snags which tend to pull out hearing protection at the worst times.

The Drape Cap takes things a step further by fully covering the entire ear (and neck) in mesh material. This is intentional.

1) Layering a headset over the mesh does not reduce audio quality, and it prevents billowing material from rubbing against headset microphones.

2) For many users, the mesh barrier dramatically reduces skin irritation from prolonged contact and pressure from ear-cups.

 3) The drape provides obvious FR benefits by increasing skin coverage

4) The oversized hemispherical ‘cut outs’ on the sides of the Drape Cap encourage airflow around ear cups and headbands. taken in ECC by @eccgear

The first production run of the FR Glove is now mostly sold, with 38.9% of inventory remaining. Of the nine (9) sizes released, four (4) are OOS and two (2) are expected to sell out within the next 14 days.

Our team is currently reviewing user feedback, warranty claims, and sizing data collected since October 2024. (If you haven’t already, please consider submitting your user feedback via the footer of our website.)

In line with ECC’s commitment to open iteration, we will release our findings in a public DevLog with summaries posted here and on other platforms.

Your support — especially from our early adopters — has dramatically accelerated our development timeline for 2025. We have several new releases on the calendar and look forward to sharing them with you. 🌎 by @eccgear

Unlike goat and cow leathers, the FR Glove’s kangaroo skin tolerates water exposure.

While all leather products require appropriate care, kangaroo is not susceptible to hardening or cracking after water exposure.

To approximate this performance goat and cow leathers are frequently coated or impregnated with plastics. This can harm their breathability and comfort. Plasticized leather also carries the risk of trapping moisture within the animal skin which can cause premature degradation.

Because of the FR Glove’s water tolerance, we encourage new owners to form fit their gloves using the water bath procedure outlined on our website. With extended use, sweat and body heat will further refine this initial fit. by @eccgear

The FR Glove is a high dexterity combat glove, designed as a best-of-all-worlds alternative to legacy products. ECC’s V1.0 release was developed and tested over 5 years and 7 iterations.

Careful material selection and construction allows ECC to match the comfort and tactility of synthetic ‘mechanic’ gloves, while offering a level of durability and protection that exceeds heavier goatskin products.

As required by a modern combat glove, inherently fire retardant Kevlar™ and kangaroo leather help prevent burns from flash fires, open flames, and dangerously hot surfaces – even after extensive use and wear. Unlike legacy products, the FR Glove is also water tolerant and naturally resists cracking and hardening. by @eccgear
