For lifelong learning and healthy habits, motivation is a key ingredient. At times we may find our little ones feeling unmotivated, bored, or even anxious. As parents and educators, we may want to reshape our ideas around motivation to best support them. According to the self-determination theory coined by psychologists E.L. Deci and R.M. Ryan, motivation is built on three basic psychological needs – autonomy, mastery, and relatedness. When these needs are met, they are intrinsically motivated - meaning that they are led to doing activities for its pure enjoyment. Another type of motivation is extrinsic - which is when they are led to doing activities for a separate outcome. Here, positive reinforcement grants better and long-term results, so children are inspired, driven, and looking forward to any task ahead of them.

Inspire curiosity, or tap into what your child(ren) is interested in. Give them the options to explore what they like - and encourage them to along the way. Praise them for their process and focus on improvement. Allow them to appreciate all outcomes as part of the journey in life.
