Embracing my natural waves! 🌊

For the longest time, I thought I had difficult, puffy hair. And then, last year, I realized I have beautiful waves!

Voting is open for the UBCP/ACTRA election!

A lot of my union and community work happens behind the scenes, and I know many members don’t know me personally. I’ve had some great conversations recently, privately and publicly, so I wanted to share a few of my responses here too.

This work is collective, and I’m grateful for the ideas and perspectives people have shared with me.

-What happens when work gets scarce?

I think we need to pay attention to people who already face barriers and can become even more overlooked.

We also need to remember our own power as artists. We aren’t only waiting for employers to choose us. We have incredible craft, skill and talent here at home. We can create, collaborate, self-generate, pitch ourselves and each other, and advocate for more Canadian production.

-Why does belonging to a union matter?

There is power in being together. Our union negotiates minimum rates and working conditions, protects performers’ rights, provides education and resources, advocates for our industry and gives us somewhere to turn when things go wrong.

And to artists who aren’t union, whether you’re waiting to join or choosing a different path: you deserve respect, professionalism, dignity and safety too.

A union isn’t some outside authority. A union is regular people doing their best and trying to make things better. The union is us.

-How do we keep people engaged?

Approachability matters. It isn’t the opposite of rigor. We can be welcoming, accessible and human AND ask hard questions, protect people and do serious work.

Community building doesn’t always have to cost a lot either. Socials, potlucks, parks, restaurants, conversations, sharing ideas and finding opportunities to collaborate. There are so many ways to bring people together.

-What about burnout and advocacy?

Advocacy takes time and energy, and burnout is real. We can share the work, stay engaged and support anyone who steps forward to advocate for us.

The more of us who participate and support each other, the stronger and healthier our community can be. by @echew_online
