Rammstein – "Ich tu dir weh"

Released on February 5, 2010, as the second single from Rammstein's sixth album Liebe ist für alle da (2009), "Ich tu dir weh" became one of the band's most controversial and provocative tracks. Written by the band and produced by Jacob Hellner and Rammstein, the song's title translates to "I'm hurting you," and its lyrics explore sadomasochistic themes of dominance and submission, with lines like "A small cut and you get excited" and "You are the ship, I am the captain" .

Musically, "Ich tu dir weh" is a crushing Neue Deutsche Härte track built on industrial rhythms, Till Lindemann's commanding baritone, and the band's signature blend of metallic riffs and electronic textures .

The song's release was overshadowed by censorship. In November 2009, German authorities placed Liebe ist für alle da on the "index" of media harmful to minors, citing the song's lyrics and an album image of guitarist Richard Kruspe with a masked naked woman . Live performances of "Ich tu dir weh" were banned in Germany, and Universal reissued a censored version of the album without the track . In June 2010, an administrative court in Cologne overturned the ban, ruling that the song contained only "a surrealistic hint at violence" rather than a detailed depiction, and the original album returned to shelves .

The music video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund, captured the band's raw stage show in 35mm on a rehearsal stage, described as "the ultimate distillation of a Rammstein concert into five minutes" . The single peaked at No. 24 on the UK Rock Chart and No. 41 in France, while the album debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 .

Marilyn Manson – "The Dope Show"

Released September 15, 1998, as the lead single from Mechanical Animals, "The Dope Show" marked a striking reinvention for Marilyn Manson. The lyrics were written by Manson, with music composed by Twiggy Ramirez, and the song satirizes the entertainment industry's dehumanizing spectacle—celebrities idolized one moment and discarded the next, with fame itself as a narcotic.

Musically, the track abandoned the industrial nihilism of Antichrist Superstar for a glam-rock swagger styled after T. Rex and David Bowie. Ramirez described it as "a mixture of Oasis and T. Rex," built on a rolling walking bassline and a stomping, stripper-beat chorus that feels both classic and futuristic.

The song peaked at No. 12 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and No. 15 on Alternative Songs—the band's highest-charting single at the time. Its surreal music video, directed by Paul Hunter, cast Manson as a red-haired, latex-painted androgynous figure reminiscent of The Man Who Fell to Earth, a sexless manufactured product rather than a human being. Rolling Stone named it the best video of 1998. Decades later, its critique of performative stardom feels more relevant than ever.

Audioslave – "Like a Stone"

Released January 20, 2003, as the second single from their self-titled debut album, "Like a Stone" became Audioslave's biggest US hit and a defining song of the supergroup era. Written by all four members—Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk—the song is often interpreted as a meditation on mortality and regret. Bassist Commerford described it as being about an old man waiting for death, sitting alone in a house after all his friends and family have passed.

Musically, "Like a Stone" is a slow-building, atmospheric ballad driven by Commerford and Wilk's hypnotic rhythm section, accented by Morello's electronica-like guitar effects and some of Cornell's most emotional vocals ever recorded.

The song topped both Billboard's Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts, reached No. 31 on the Hot 100, and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance. Its music video, directed by Meiert Avis, was shot in the Los Angeles house where the band rehearsed, capturing them in their "natural habitat" and has since surpassed one billion views on YouTube.

Depeche Mode – "Policy of Truth"

Released May 7, 1990, as the third single from Violator, "Policy of Truth" found Depeche Mode subverting the old adage that the truth shall set you free. Written by Martin Gore and produced by the band with Flood, the song argues the opposite: that honesty can be a trap, and once a confession is made it can't be taken back. The narrator coolly advises, "Hide what you have to hide / And tell what you have to tell"—a strikingly cynical counterpoint to the album's more spiritual themes.

Musically, the track glides on one of the band's most alluring synthetic rhythms, built around a seductive, sliding guitar riff and deep electronic textures, with Dave Gahan delivering Gore's words in his signature insinuating tone.

"Policy of Truth" holds a unique place in the band's catalog: it is the only Depeche Mode single to chart higher on the Billboard Hot 100 (No. 15) than on the UK Singles Chart (No. 16). It also became their second No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and reached No. 2 on the Dance Club Songs chart. Its video, directed by Anton Corbijn, is a moody, Super 8-shot piece that perfectly matches the song's air of guarded secrecy.

Pink Floyd – "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2"

Released on November 23, 1979, as a single from the rock opera The Wall, "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" became Pink Floyd's most unlikely—and most defining—hit. Written by Roger Waters as a protest against rigid, abusive schooling, the song features a children's choir and, at producer Bob Ezrin's suggestion, a disco-influenced beat that David Gilmour initially hated. The lyrics reject authoritarian control: "We don't need no education."

Musically, the track is built around a hypnotic bassline, a driving four-on-the-floor rhythm, and one of Gilmour's most searing guitar solos, recorded on a 1955 Gibson Les Paul. The children's choir, recorded at Islington Green School near the band's studio, gives the song its chilling, anthemic power.

The song topped the charts in 14 countries, including the UK and US—Pink Floyd's only No. 1 single in either country—and sold over four million copies worldwide. It earned a Grammy nomination and was ranked No. 384 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Its iconic music video, directed by Gerald Scarfe, features the unforgettable imagery of schoolchildren marching into a meat grinder and becoming uniform clones before rioting—a visual that cemented the song's legacy as an anti-authority anthem.

Metallica – "Whiskey in the Jar"

Released February 1, 1999, as the second single from the covers album Garage Inc., "Whiskey in the Jar" became one of Metallica's most beloved and unlikely hits. The song is a traditional 17th-century Irish folk ballad about a highwayman betrayed by his lover. Metallica's version was directly inspired by Thin Lizzy's 1973 hard rock arrangement, adapting its guitar leads and structure rather than the original folk tune. It was recorded during the Garage Inc. sessions in late 1998 with producer Bob Rock.

Musically, the track transforms the folk standard into a charging, twin-guitar heavy metal anthem, complete with a unmistakable harmonized lead melody and a driving, triumphant rhythm that made it a live staple.

The song was a major international success. It reached No. 4 on the US Mainstream Rock chart, No. 29 on the UK Singles Chart, No. 17 in Ireland, and No. 1 on the UK Rock & Metal chart. In 2000, it won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Its music video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund, was shot in New York and captured the band's raw energy. Decades later, Metallica still performs it live—including a 2019 tribute to Phil Lynott in Ireland—cementing it as a rare cover that stands entirely on its own.

Slipknot – "Killpop"

Released April 28, 2015, as the fourth single from Slipknot's fifth album .5: The Gray Chapter, "Killpop" became one of the band's most melodic and surprisingly personal tracks. Written by Corey Taylor and the band, the song is often mistaken for a twisted love song—but Taylor revealed the "she" he's singing about is music itself. He described it as his reflection on his love-hate relationship with the music industry: "how much I still love making music, but also how much I just hate the business side, the numbers side, the people in the suits".

Musically, "Killpop" is a gothic metal track that leans into melody far more than most of Slipknot's catalog, built on a brooding, atmospheric riff and Taylor's clean, restrained verses before the chorus opens up. Produced by Greg Fidelman, it balances accessibility with the band's signature darkness.

The song peaked at No. 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, No. 28 on the UK Rock Chart, and No. 45 on Rock Digital Songs. Its eerie music video, directed by percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan, places the band in a dark, unsettling dimension that matches the song's themes of attraction and decay.

Evanescence – "Call Me When You're Sober"

Released September 4, 2006, as the lead single from Evanescence's second album The Open Door, "Call Me When You're Sober" became one of the band's most direct and personal hits. Written by Amy Lee and guitarist Terry Balsamo, the song was inspired by the end of Lee's relationship with Seether frontman Shaun Morgan, who entered rehab the same day the single hit airwaves. Lee called the lyrics her most honest yet: "I was just sick of hiding behind metaphors".

Musically, the track fuses alternative metal, symphonic rock, and electropop, pairing Lee's theatrical vocals with Balsamo's heavy riff and a soaring, radio-ready chorus.

"Call Me When You're Sober" peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the Alternative Songs chart, reaching the top ten in the UK, Australia, Italy, Canada, and New Zealand. It was certified platinum by the RIAA and gold by ARIA. Its music video, directed by Marc Webb, reimagines Little Red Riding Hood as a metaphor for the relationship, with Lee in a red cape confronting her ex-lover.

Alice in Chains – "Man in the Box"

Released in January 1991 as the second single from their debut album Facelift, "Man in the Box" became Alice in Chains' breakthrough song. Written by guitarist Jerry Cantrell with lyrics by Layne Staley, the track was inspired by two things: Staley's desire to explore censorship in the mass media, and a dinner conversation with vegetarian Columbia Records staffers about how veal calves are raised in tiny crates to restrict their movement. Staley combined both into a song about being trapped—by government, media, and the systems built to control you. As Cantrell explained, "It's about breaking out of that box and looking outside of that box that has been built for you".

Musically, the song is built around one of the most distinctive riffs in grunge, with Cantrell's down-tuned guitar work and Staley's powerful, anguished vocals. It also features a talk box—the same effect Peter Frampton made famous—used on the guitar to create a ghostly, vocal-like texture. Producer Dave Jerden later recalled that radio stations initially rejected the song because they thought Staley's voice was "wrong".

"Man in the Box" peaked at No. 18 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1992. Its sepia-toned music video, directed by Paul Rachman, shows the band performing on a farm with a mysterious hooded figure—a disturbing visual for the censorship theme—and became the first grunge video to receive significant MTV airplay. Between 2010 and 2019, it was the second most-played song on mainstream rock radio. Three decades later, it remains a defining track of the grunge era.

Hoobastank – "The Reason"

Released January 26, 2004, as the second single from their album of the same name, "The Reason" became Hoobastank's most commercially successful song. Written by guitarist Dan Estrin, who composed the instrumental demo, and lead singer Doug Robb, who pieced together lyrics from old journal entries, the power ballad explores themes of regret, self-reflection, and the desire to change for someone you love. Robb later said the song was ultimately about his own flaws: "It took all the questioning for me to really realize the song is about me. The song is about my own issues of messing up, and having to readjust my own behavior to make things work".

Musically, "The Reason" is a melodic power ballad built around Estrin's driving guitar work and Robb's emotive vocals, building to a soaring, anthemic chorus. The track helped define the softer, more radio-friendly side of post-grunge, balancing heaviness with vulnerability in a way that made it a crossover hit.

The song peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending 38 weeks on the chart, and hit No. 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks, Adult Top 40, and Mainstream Top 40 charts. It earned two Grammy nominations in 2005 for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Its music video, directed by Brett Simon, follows a jewel heist disguised as a hit-and-run and has since surpassed one billion views on YouTube. In 2021, the song found new life on TikTok through the NotAPerfectPerson trend, introducing it to a new generation. Two decades later, it remains an enduring anthem of apology and personal growth.

The Cranberries – "When You're Gone"

Released in October 1996 as the third single from To the Faithful Departed, "When You're Gone" became one of The Cranberries' most heartfelt songs. Written by Dolores O'Riordan after her grandfather Joe died in 1995, the song explores loss and longing—the feeling of emptiness when someone you love is no longer there. O'Riordan's lyrics balance love and heartbreak with the necessity of missing someone, making the song deeply personal yet universal.

Musically, "When You're Gone" is a rock ballad built around O'Riordan's aching, distinctive vocals and the band's melodic guitar work, building toward a chorus that captures the raw ache of grief.

The song peaked at No. 4 in Norway, where it earned a platinum disc, No. 15 in Canada, and No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending 20 weeks on the chart. Its black-and-white music video, directed by Karen Bellone, features the burning "yellow room" from the album cover over a body of water—a haunting visual to match the song's themes. In 2018, it was played at O'Riordan's funeral and simultaneously by Irish radio stations across the country, a final tribute to her voice.

Aerosmith – "Angel"

Released January 5, 1988, as the third single from Aerosmith's comeback album Permanent Vacation, "Angel" became one of the band's most successful power ballads. Written by Steven Tyler with professional songwriter Desmond Child, the song was inspired by Tyler's relationship with Teresa Barrick, whom he had recently started dating. As Child recalled, Tyler told him, "She's my angel"—and the song was born.

Musically, "Angel" marked a departure from Aerosmith's bluesy swagger, favoring emotional vulnerability and a polished, radio-friendly arrangement built around Tyler's soaring vocals and Joe Perry's melodic guitar work.

The song climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Aerosmith's highest-charting single at the time and their first Top 5 hit. It spent 25 weeks on the chart and ranked No. 35 on Billboard's year-end chart for 1988. Its music video, directed by Marty Callner, features Tyler performing at a piano, haunted by visions of an angel—presumably a lost love.
