Finished Five Survive and found Red Kenny. Or perhaps she found me? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I called her my twin from another life, not because our stories are identical, but because I recognized something painfully familiar in her thoughts. The loss of a mother. The questions left unanswered. The quiet ache of wondering what she wanted to tell you in her last moments.

And then there was Arthur.

I said, almost jokingly, “Only difference is, she had her Arthur. I don’t.”

For a moment, I let myself believe in the poetry of that sentence- perhaps every Red gets her Arthur eventually.

Then I remembered, this is real life.

Every Red doesn’t get her Arthur.

Fiction can give its characters the person who stays, who waits. Real life makes no such promise.

Maybe that is why Red felt so much like a twin from another life, not because our endings are the same, but because for a few hundred pages, someone else was carrying thoughts I thought belonged only to me.

And perhaps that is one of the quietest gifts of reading, sometimes a book doesn’t give you the life you wish you had.

I owe 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘦𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 an apology for taking two whole months to finally write this review.

I went into this expecting a heavy, grief centered read, a theme I usually avoid like the plague. But this time I wanted to challenge myself, so I simply opened the book and read.

And I am so glad I did.

What struck me first was how 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭. I wasn’t simply reading about these people, I felt like I was living alongside them. One moment I was in Phoebe’s shoes, and the next I found myself slipping into Lila’s world.

Two women from different worlds, ages and circumstances, yet somehow connected by something much bigger - 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝.

The feeling of not being enough. Of being left behind. Of wondering whether everyone else has figured life out while you’re somehow standing still. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞.

And then there were the emotions.
I laughed, felt frustrated, sad, hopeful and angry. I emphasized with people I didn’t even particularly like 😂

I went in expecting a book about grief. Instead, I found a book about what we do 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 grief, about becoming someone new when the life you thought you’d have no longer exists.
And perhaps this is why the book feels even more significant to me now. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞.

Sometimes a book doesn’t reveal everything on the first reading. Sometimes 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧, and you return to its pages with a little more understanding.

If you’ve been hesitating, 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧. Let it take you where it wants to.

If you ever find yourself in Phoebe’s shoes, 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐥𝐚.

And if you’re Lila, perhaps you’ll find your Phoebe.

My dearest readers,

I have a rather unfortunate confession to make.

I read The Wedding People two months ago. Two 🫠 And somehow, with life getting in the way and my brain occupied with approximately 47 other things, I never wrote the review.

Now that I am finally sitting down to do it, I have encountered an entirely different problem.

I have far too much to say 🫣

Do I give you quick little review and spare you the elaboration, or do I indulge myself and give you the full version of everything I have been thinking about this book for the past two months?

The Lady Whistledown in me, regrettably, has not retired.
