On Friday, dozens of members across our union joined us in court in support of Julio and Agnes and the Occidental Tenants Association who are beloved leaders of our local. We go to eviction court as a union to for many reasons. Among them is to bear witness to the crimes against humanity that judges, landlords and attorneys commit against the people of Los Angeles every day. Where evictions are seen as an individual or administrative issues in court - we bring in the masses and recognize it as a collective political issue. So many people go un represented to eviction court with no attorney or tenant union, single mothers, grandmothers. We come prepared ready to put up a fight in and outside of court! Join us this summer for court support for the tenants of our local resisting Ellis Act Evictions!

As our fascist government bombs and exploits people abroad, they kindap, sweep, evict, and incarcerate our people at home. Even the most self-professed “progressive” politicians are deeply complicit in state violence and offer nothing but tepid reforms. Self-serving politicians will never save the people.

It’s time to organize our community to protect each other and meet each other’s needs. Only the people can save the people!

WHY A REALLY, REALLY FREE MARKET?

Really, Really Free Markets are an anti-capitalist movement that strengthen communities with free resources, challenging myths of scarcity and competition, while reclaiming public space that has been gentrified and criminalized.

The name Really, Really Free Market is itself a play on words as a reinterpretation and re-envisioning of the term “free market,” which generally refers to an economy based on competition, governed by supply and demand.

This free market is one event, but we invite you to join us in building a lasting network of support that collectively strengthens us. by @echoparklatu

On May 27, Yale Terrace Tenant Union from Chinatown traveled to Koreatown to deliver a letter of demands to their landlord, Kheir Clinic, a nonprofit health care provider. The letter highlighted years of unlawful rent increase, miscellaneous additional fees, surveillance, and harassment issues at their homes. They successfully pressured two Kheir managers to listen to their demands, and have given Kheir a week to respond.

Yale Terrace Apartments is only one of dozens of affordable housing buildings owned by Kheir Clinic throughout California, and managed by Triumph Residential Services, Inc. Yale Terrace is one of several Triumph buildings where tenants are organized under the Triumph Tenant Council with @latenants.

We demand that Kheir Clinic and Triumph stop management abuses in all their buildings!

Help us apply pressure to Kheir admin to respond to us by calling 📞(213) 427-4000 or emailing 📧 info@lakheir.org

1️⃣click email at tinyurl.com/Pressure-KheirClinic (link in bio)

Thank you to @latenants and tenants at Corondolet, Metro Senior Lofts, and @hillsidevilla_, for joining us! ✊🏽❤️‍🔥

Did you know ❓that the Ellis Act has destroyed over 32,000 rent-controlled homes in LA ❓That Echo Park & Silverlake are some of the neighborhoods hit hardest by the Ellis Act ❓That tenants who receive Ellis Act evictions can apply for a 1-year extension and use that time to build a fight with their neighbors ❓That we can fight to stay in our homes and win❓

At last night’s court support training at the Occidental Tenants Association, we prepared to fight Ellis Act evictions across 3 organized buildings together, both in and out or court. Stay tuned for upcoming actions to keep our longtime neighbors in their homes and resist the attack on our immigrant and working class communities!

Want to join LATU and fight gentrification in LA? There are multiple LIHTC buildings owned by slumlords Erin Pak & Young S Kim and managed by Triumph Residential Services in Westlake and Echo Park. We need your help with door knocking, outreach, and joining the fight against harassment, bogus fees, and disrepair! In our organized buildings we’ve found that long time tenants are subject to displacement through repeated 10% rent increases, mismanagement, elevator outages, surveillance, charging tenants for basic repairs, and more… Come learn how we’ve fought it in our buildings so far and help get the word out to these buildings :)
**bilingual people highly encouraged**

Because these are our homes of many decades. Because a market rent unit costs $3,000 a month. Because we don’t want to have to leave our neighborhood or sometimes even our city. Because moving is very difficult for elderly and disabled tenants. Because we’ll spend the $19,000 on taxes, moving costs, and higher rents within the year. Because our churches, doctors, and schools are nearby. Because many evictions lead to homelessness. Because we need to make 3x the rent to qualify for a new apartment. Because we know the landlord is making up reasons to circumvent rent control. Because we have roots here. Because we are organized tenants fighting for the human right to dignified housing for all. by @echoparklatu
