SHEFFIELD… what just happened?!

Echosound Festival was an absolute stormer of a day. I was truly blown away by the response it was incredible to see hundreds of people travel from all over the UK to support emerging talent. That’s what it’s all about.

I genuinely hope you all had an amazing time!

A massive thank you to every single artist who played, to the network, and to the staff who kept everything running smoothly behind the scenes. These events don’t happen without you.

If you loved yesterday, we go again on May 9th in Manchester with another huge lineup. Tickets are in the bio if you’re interested.

And don’t worry… Echosound Festival WILL be returning to Sheffield. Maybe even a little sooner than you think. Watch this space.

Thank you for being part of history!

Earlier this year, Manchester four piece Strata came crashing onto our radar with Mr Procrastinator, a fantastic slice of indie rock and roll that sent the lads on a rather impressive upward trajectory.

So when news dropped of a follow up, there was one big question. Could they live up to the hype? Well, It’s me (Can’t You See) is here, so let’s find out!

The song wastes absolutely no time getting going, and straight away those familiar indie influences come flooding through. There’s a real throwback to the days of The Kooks, Razorlight and Dirty Pretty Things, with a few shades of more modern outfits like The Reytons creeping in. It’s short, sharp and straight to the point!

Much like their previous effort, the vocal delivery is wonderfully conversational, almost as though they’re telling you a story rather than singing one. The instrumentation keeps the energy high throughout, with that scrappy indie rock swagger underpinning the whole thing brilliantly.

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about it all. A proper slice of post punk indie sleaze that wouldn’t have sounded out of place twenty years ago.

But here’s the thing.

Is it avant garde? No.

Is it some elaborate shoegaze art piece? Absolutely not.

Have Strata reinvented the wheel? Again, no.

But did they need to?

Not in the slightest!

Sometimes you don’t need to reinvent a sound to make something genuinely enjoyable from it. And once again, the lads have delivered exactly that. A catchy, well produced bit of indie rock and roll that knows exactly what it wants to be and doesn’t waste a second getting there.

So, have Strata lived up to the hype?

I dare say they absolutely have!

A cracking follow up to Mr Procrastinator, and we’re certainly looking forward to seeing where these lads go next.

Go and give It’s me (Can’t You See) a listen right now!

Spangled are undoubtedly one of the North’s best kept secrets. With a cult like following, unmatched live energy and a knack for delivering absolute bangers, the Manchester lads have been making some serious noise over the last few years.

So when news dropped that they’d be releasing their second single of 2026, you can imagine the excitement. After all, we’ve been waiting since February for summat new from Spangled to get bouncing to!

Well, the wait is finally over!

The song opens with some almost dissonant arpeggios that have a lovely little edge to them. There’s something slightly uneasy about the whole thing as the vocals slither over the top, before some fantastic instrumental stabs kick in and propel us towards the chorus. And then things really get going!

The vocal delivery is wonderfully conversational, but there’s still an unmistakable energy running through the whole thing. It’s something Spangled do brilliantly, making everything feel almost effortless while keeping you completely hooked in the chaos.

The chorus is another highlight, (but what else did you expect!) with some fantastic call and response sections that I can already imagine going down an absolute storm live. It’s catchy, full of character and has that unmistakable Spangled swagger written all over it.

As the song continues, the lads keep that momentum rolling before the second chorus gives way to a brilliant little refrain.
And this is where things get interesting!

There’s an almost Wombats esque quality to the wooing vocals that follow, adding another infectious layer to an already ridiculously catchy track. It’s a fantastic touch and one that takes the song home beautifully.

What I like about Made For Gold is that it doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Spangled know exactly what they’re good at, and they’ve delivered it once again with all the energy, personality and clever musical touches we’ve come to expect.

From top to bottom, the lads have done what they do best.

Created another absolute banger!

So, what are you waiting for?

Crack it on and GET FUCKING SPANGLED!

Sheffield’s Matilda Shakes are certainly no strangers to the local music scene. From sold out hometown shows to packed festival stages, including Tramlines earlier this year, the lads have been making some serious noise.

Now they’re back with Roller Coaster, and this time they’ve decided to show us something a little different. (And we’re absolutely here for it!)

The song opens with a really cool groove that almost seems effortless. The vocals roll over the instrumentation brilliantly, while an offbeat rhythm keeps everything moving along nicely. There’s a real swagger to it, and what I really like is how natural the whole thing feels.

Then things drop back, and in comes the chorus. Once again, that offbeat rhythm takes centre stage, giving the chorus a fantastic bounce that really gets under your skin. It’s ridiculously catchy, and before long you’ve got another Matilda Shakes chorus stuck in your head. (Good luck getting that one out!)

As the song progresses, the instrumentation continues to rise and fall, with some lovely changes in dynamics keeping everything interesting. ( a bit like a roller coaster, you could say. Who’d have thought it?)

But what I find particularly interesting is how different this feels from their previous material. We’re used to big guitars, pounding drums and massive singalong choruses, but this time there’s more emphasis on melody and groove, giving the song a little more room to breathe. And you know what? It really works!

It’s great to hear the lads exploring another side of their songwriting. They’ve already proven they can deliver the big anthemic numbers, but Roller Coaster shows there’s a few more colours on their musical palette.

A cracking release, a cool change of pace and another reminder that Matilda Shakes have plenty more tricks up their sleeves. Give Roller Coaster a spin. I dare say you’ll enjoy the ride! (Apologies love a pun)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock in 2026 (or just don’t have socials), you’ll have seen a clip of XL Poncho performing Tell It Me Straight. As days turned into weeks and months, one question kept coming up: when are they finally dropping this thing?

Well, October 16th is here, and we are absolutely ready!

The song opens surprisingly subdued. You expect a huge chorus, but instead Olivia takes a more conversational approach, with instrumentation that has a little Little Comets feel to it. It’s a cool touch and suits her delivery brilliantly.

And then that familiar chorus hits.

Everything kicks up a gear, with some real No Doubt vibes creeping in. It’s an absolute earworm, and you can see exactly why this hook has taken over socials. Once it’s in your head. (good luck getting it out!)

The second verse throws in some great twists as Olivia lets loose with faster, more melodic lines against brilliant stop start dynamics. I love how the band pull everything back before the second chorus, where the vocals once again knock it out of the park.

Then comes the final third, and boy, this is where things get interesting. The song takes an almost jazzy detour into triple metre, with everything dancing around each other before stripping back to acoustic guitar and vocals. A bold move, and one that really pays off!

I think this might surprise anyone expecting another straightforward indie tune. There’s clever songwriting, fantastic musicianship and a band unafraid to take risks. (The little details make it better on repeat listens.)

So, is the hype real? I dare say it absolutely is!

A nuanced, bold and above all bloody brilliant debut from a band we’ll be hearing a lot more about.

Check it out now, and catch XL Poncho at Echosound Festival, November 14th at Network Sheffield. (Tickets in bio) I’m telling you straight, you won’t want to miss these guys before they blow up!
