The Mercians are back with The Man, the second single from their upcoming debut album Author of My Own Misfortune. This is a band that have had a serious amount of hype around them for years, and their first single (which I loved) from the upcoming record was another testament to just how good their songwriting has become, so naturally I was very excited to hear what they’d come up with next.

The song starts with effortless cool as bluesy rock and roll drums and guitars kick things off. There’s something reminiscent of The Black Keys or certain eras of Arctic Monkeys in there, but with so much more bite behind it. It instantly has swagger, and more importantly, it instantly has you hooked.

The vocals in the verse once again show a fantastic command of melody, but it’s when the instrumentation eases off slightly and the falsetto takes over that things really hit.

Firstly, what a hook. Secondly, what a way to completely change up the vocal range!

Much like on their previous single, The Mercians constantly find little ways to surprise you. They don’t need to completely reinvent the song every 30 seconds instead, they keep introducing little sonic subtleties, changes in dynamics and melodic ideas that constantly give your ears something new to grab onto.

Then there’s the way this thing builds. As everything starts to stack up towards the end, the track becomes absolutely massive. The crescendo genuinely sounds like something Hans Zimmer would be proud of, bringing a cinematic scale to what started as this effortlessly cool slice of bluesy indie rock.

What can I say? The Mercians have provided us with another absolute banger. This is a band that have been building for years, but right now it feels like they’re accelerating rapidly, and if these first two singles are anything to go by, that debut album could be something very special.

Catch The Mercians live at EchoSound Festival, November 14th at Network Sheffield. Tickets are in the bio you won’t want to miss this!
