Mermaid’s Heaven 🧜🏻‍♀️🐚🌊

At Paris Design Week 2023, Tess Morley fills de Gournay’s Paris showroom with shells collected, handled, and obsessively matched to each piece.

Set against the ‘Amami Waves’ silk, her work feels less like decoration and more like accumulation. Texture over image. Instinct over composition.

Shells layered onto shells, surfaces built slowly, almost compulsively until they begin to echo the seabed itself.

Not a reference to the sea, but something closer to it.

Polish modernism deserves a bigger place in the design canon.

Developed under conditions of scarcity and political constraint, it produced a remarkably inventive approach to furniture, glass, metalwork and everyday objects, one that feels surprisingly relevant today.

Polish Modernism: A Struggle for Beauty brings historic works into dialogue with contemporary Polish designers, asking us to look beyond the familiar stories of Scandinavian and Italian modernism.

Which design culture do you think deserves to be better known internationally?

Located in Croatia, this 1880s Austro-Hungarian palace was originally the residence of a wealthy industrial entrepreneur. It remained in the same family until the late 1980s, when the building was converted into apartment units. The stairwell, preserved in its original blue tones, remains one of the few surviving traces of its 19th-century grandeur.

At La Foce, history and design are inseparable. Once a 15th-century hospice, it became the home of Iris and Antonio Origo, who transformed the estate into a cultural landmark of Tuscany. Formal gardens designed by Cecil Pinsent unfold in perfect symmetry, their lines framing the vast, painterly landscapes of the Val d’Orcia.

Today, La Foce is celebrated not only for its Renaissance architecture and geometric gardens but also for its role in shaping the cultural identity of the region—a dialogue between past and present, wilderness and design.

Hidden inside the New Palace of Morbi, this breathtaking indoor pool was once the private sanctuary of Maharaja Mahendrasinhji — a visionary ruler known for his love of sport, architecture, and progressive design.

Constructed between 1931 and 1944, the palace was designed by British architects Gregson, Batley & King and built by the famed firm Shapoorji Pallonji. It remains one of India’s most striking examples of Art Deco architecture, echoing the grandeur of imperial ambition while embracing the sleek, modern lines of the 20th century.

But it’s not just the architecture that stuns. The interiors were entrusted to Stefan Norblin, a Polish artist exiled by war, who transformed the palace with hauntingly beautiful murals: zodiac goddesses, leaping deer, stylised figures, and a swirl of Indo-European symbolism that feels both surreal and spiritual.

This pool, once used for royal fitness and ceremonial plunges, is now a relic of a forgotten world — one where princes designed gyms as palaces and every corner was meant to impress, inspire, and reflect power through beauty. A marvel of interwar India, caught between tradition and transformation.

A vision in blue and chinoiserie. This bold entryway by @katieridderinc layers architectural drama with playful symmetry, from cherry blossom branches to a wall of porcelain perched on crimson brackets. A masterclass in turning tradition into spectacle.

Would you dare to go this bold at home?

The Green Shell Bed in the State Bedroom of Houghton Hall, Norfolk—one of England’s finest Palladian houses—epitomizes 18th-century grandeur. The scallop-shaped canopy, echoing Rococo tastes, reflects a wider fascination with shells as symbols of luxury, femininity, and nature’s perfect geometry. Once a fashionable motif in interior design, shellwork adorned grottos, bedframes, and garden follies alike. Which forgotten design trend would you love to see make a comeback?

In the pheasantry of the Château de Chantilly, a gilded trellis unfurls across the walls, blooming with hand-painted roses and darting birds in flight. Conceived in the late 18th century as a space for breeding pheasants, this rotunda was transformed into a jewel of trompe-l’œil artistry—where illusion blurs with botany, and walls mimic nature in perpetual spring. Part of the Domaine de Chantilly, the room reflects the aristocratic taste for pastoral fantasy, echoing the formal gardens just beyond, designed by Le Nôtre.
