The psychology of yellow spaces

Yellow is the colour of the sun, and the human brain knows it. Before you have even registered the room you are standing in, yellow has already done something to your nervous system. It is one of the fastest colours the eye processes, and that immediacy is exactly what makes it so powerful and so easy to get wrong.

At the right intensity, yellow lifts a space in a way no other colour can. It generates warmth, stimulates mental activity, and creates a sense of optimism that is almost impossible to manufacture through any other design choice. Kitchens and dining rooms bathed in soft yellow feel alive. They invite conversation, appetite, and energy.

But yellow is unforgiving. Push it too far in saturation and it stops being uplifting and starts being agitating. Studies have shown that people lose their tempers more easily and babies cry more frequently in overly yellow rooms. The colour that promises the most also demands the most restraint from the designer working with it.

The secret is in the tone. Soft buttermilk yellows and warm ochres carry all the psychological benefits without the aggression. They make a space feel sunlit even in the absence of natural light, which is one of the most valuable things a colour can do in interior design.

Yellow doesn’t decorate a room. At its best, it charges it.

Inspired Spaces

Viscount Bearsted’s bathroom at Upton House – 1927/1929 – Silver aluminium leaf decor – Upton House, Warwickshire
Designed by Percy Richard Morley.

The history of the house is really interesting. Upton House was a country house belonging to Lord Bearsted in the 1930’s. Bearsted’s father had a successful import business and also started a “souvenir” business in London selling boxes covered with sea shells – shell boxes. Up until this point, people would never go to London or anywhere else on holiday until trains made this possible. He thought they might like a souvenir of their weekend trip to London so the shell boxes were a big hit. His sons also worked in the business and they thought that maybe importing oil might be an important trade for the future… they were right! They decided to name their business after their father’s souvenir boxes and named the company Shell. Needless to say, they both became millionaires having the right idea at the right time. Upton House was just one of the many country homes that Lord Bearsted owned. (Text ➰ @eclectic_territory

MINT ANYONE? 💚
Mint is the mood I’m loving right now — a cool, clarifying hue that lifts a room and resets the atmosphere.

Especially when paired with Kahki 👀

Pink dreams, @eclectic_territory In the heart of Melides, Portugal, Christian Louboutin has crafted a sanctuary that intertwines his personal journey with the village’s serene charm. Drawn to Melides over a decade ago after a serendipitous detour from nearby Comporta, Louboutin transformed his initial retreat—a humble fisherman’s house—into a haven of creativity.

Hotel Vermelho, meaning “red” in Portuguese, is a manifestation of Louboutin’s eclectic vision. Collaborating with architect Madalena Caiado and designer Carolina Irving, the 13-room boutique hotel is a tapestry of global artistry and local craftsmanship. Guests are greeted by a façade adorned with baroque-inspired ceramics by Giuseppe Ducrot, leading into interiors where hand-painted azulejos from Azulejos de Azeitão, shell-encrusted walls, and antique furnishings narrate tales of distant lands and eras.

Each room is a unique canvas, featuring elements like alabaster walls in the spa that filter golden light, and custom chandeliers from India. The altar-like bar, with its glossy scarlet tiles, pays homage to Louboutin’s signature hue, while the garden, designed by Louis Benech, offers a tranquil escape amidst lush greenery.
