Thanks to the @hurfordcenter for awarding a Tuttle Creative Residency for Keg de Souza to come to town for these programs.

Please join us on October 21st at Noon for the demonstration of listening to indigo plants and see a new publication Blue Gold, and join again on October 28th at 430pm. Both take place at @haverfordvcam in conjunction with the Eco-Social Realism exhibit opening at @hcexhibits on Friday October 23rd at 430pm.

Thank you to everyone at Hurford Center, VCAM and Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery and thanks especially to @dylan__gauthier__ (Visiting Assistant Professor, Bi-Co Department of Environmental Studies) for his collaboration throughout this process and stewarding the Tuttle Creative Residency program to support this visit.

Details:

Keg de Souza’s VCAMBient Biofeedback Demonstration and Publication Launch
Wednesday, October 21
12 p.m. @ VCAM Lounge

Expanding on her work, Blue Gold, featured in the upcoming CFG Exhibition “Eco Social Realism” curated by Daniel Tucker, Keg will host a deep listening session, Listening to Indigo: Echoes of Blue Gold, with indigo plants grown in the Haverfarm.

A new publication, Blue Gold, will be shared at this event.

Banana Lecture
Wednesday, October 28
4:30–6 p.m. @ VCAM Screening Room

Bananas: A Wild Story explores the banana as a site of cultural, political and ecological entanglement. From colonial plantations to contemporary supermarkets, this everyday fruit reveals a complex story of globalisation, labour exploitation, monoculture plantations and myth-making. The event will also feature banana-based tastings developed in response to themes explored in the lecture, alongside songs that echo and expand upon its stories, offering a multisensory experience of this most iconic fruit.

About Keg:
Keg de Souza is an artist of Goan ancestry who lives on unceded Gadigal land in Sydney. Architecturally trained, she creates social and spatial environments, making reference to her lived experiences of squatting and organising with projects that use plant and food politics, temporary architecture, publishing and radical pedagogy. Join us next Saturday at @bigrampphilly for the opening of the next exhibit site in Eco-Social Realism featuring the work of Cynthia Hooper, Sarah Kanouse, and Sean Starowitz.

Eco-Social Realism brings together artworks that show an increased in-
terest in infrastructural and bioregional practices that can visualize and
embody the territorial scale of both problems and solutions related to the
climate crisis. Hooper, Kanouse and Starowitz’s explorations of water and
electrical infrastructure through personal, observational and playful methods demonstrate a range of aesthetic and political commitments.

This is the 3rd exhibit in this series and was supported by @collectivefutures.info - See you at Big Ramp (2024 East Westmoreland Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19134, United States)! taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @ecosocialseries

José Ortiz-Pagán’s Verde mas Profundo (Even Deeper Green)

At The Emerald Wildflower Garden 2309 Emerald Street Philadelphia, PA 19125

Join us for a meal and a performance by José Ortiz-Pagán developed in response to the mural Forest Green (1996) by Ras Malik at The Emerald Wildflower Garden. Ortiz-Pagán will engage with Malik’s mural through storytelling and ritual as part of a series called Eco-Social Realism: Historic Mural Activations developed with Mural Arts which will be exhibited next fall at TILT Institute and be par

As Ortiz-Pagán writes, the activation unfolds across three movements: a masked frog, an emissary between worlds, tracing a performative path; attendees are then invited to compose a plant bath from herbs gathered in the garden or drawn from the surrounding region; and a shared meal closes the circle with an intimate audience. Together, these gestures form a communal act of reconnection, a turning toward restoration through the quiet of collective ritual and gathering.

We hope that you will join us for this intimate evening!

Thanks to Jeff Carpineta and The Perch for their co-sponsorship of this program.

Artist Bio:

José Ortiz-Pagán, a Puerto Rican artist based in Philadelphia, uses art as a tool for social change, recontextualizing spirituality as a form of resistance. His work empowers communities through collective rituals and storytelling. Notable projects include *A Solitary Procession*, a space for mourning with dignity, and *Summoning of Memory*, a performance in Kensington exploring self-agency through shared memory. In 2025, he completed *From Soil to Stars*, an artist residency at the University of Pennsylvania. His work has been exhibited internationally and received recognition from NALAC, the Philadelphia Foundation and in 2026 he was awarded a Pew Fellowship.
