THIS WEEK! Banana Talk with Keg de Souza Wednesday, Oct 28, 4:30-6pm VCAM Screening Room Bananas: A Wild Story explores the banana as a site of cultural, political and ecological entanglement. From colonial plantations to contemporary supermarkets, this everyday fruit reveals a complex story of globalisation, labour exploitation, monoculture plantations and myth-making. Moving between storytelling, critical theory and the botanical, this lecture unpeels layers of meaning associated with this ubiquitous fruit - examining its role in shaping histories of empire, racial capitalism and consumer desire - inviting readers to reconsider what it means to consume something so familiar, yet so deeply implicated in global systems of power. An original accompanying publication, Bananas: A Wild Story, will be printed and distributed to the public as part of the event. Alongside some banana-y tastings. Keg de Souza is an artist of Goan ancestry who lives on unceded Gadigal land in Sydney. Architecturally trained, she creates social and spatial environments, making reference to her lived experiences of squatting and organising with projects that use plant and food politics, temporary architecture, publishing and radical pedagogy. De Souza also draws from personal experiences of colonialism to inform her layered projects that centre voices that are often marginalized, for learning about Place. Themes of displacement – through lenses such as colonialism and gentrification – filter through her work, sharing (often lesser-known) stories and relationships of plants, people and Place. Organized and facilitated by Dylan Gauthier, Visiting Professor of Environmental Studies. Sponsored by the Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities’ Tuttle Creative Residencies Program in conjunction with the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery exhibition Eco-Social Realism, curated by Daniel Tucker. ECO-SOCIAL REALISM ARTIST HIGHLIGHT Sam Horowitz A futurist, mad scientist, and Assistant Professor at Rowan University in New Jersey. Sam Horowitz (@samhorowitzstudio) has exhibited at the Society for Domestic Museology in the Bronx, Point of Contact Gallery in Syracuse, the Art Space in Beacon, NY. He earned degrees from Alfred University (MFA, 02020) and Bard College (BA, 02010) and was awarded an 02025 Individual Fellowship in Sculpture by the New Jersey Council on the Arts, and has held a number of artist residencies, from Fleinvær (Norway, 02026), to Governors Island (NYC, 02016), to Sloss Furnaces (AL, 02022-02023). Within Horowitz’s studio work, concepts of geology, state change, and philosophy merge and conform to question perspective and identity. Horowitz finds a balance between fine craft and found texture, playing carefully worked surfaces against those weathered by processes biological, meteorological, and industrial alike. He replicates these processes in the studio, creating artifacts from a thousand years ago, today. The same forces work at the stone of ‘Anchor’, but this erosion will be all but invisible. Nevertheless, over the course of Deep Time, both sculptures will decay and transform, lively in relation to the cosmos around them. Horowitz observes that we contribute to an infrastructure sprawling over a landscape changed, removed from a natural state of erosion, decay, and renewal. Some natural materials remain relevant to our methods of growth — those plentiful enough to remain the cheapest option. Gabions (metal cages filled with stone) have become a quick fix for projects needing bulky structural support. ‘Anchor’ reimagines the form of a gabion cage as an hourglass, referencing both the human figure and that of the quintessential. Work currently at Street Road: Pomological ruminates on apples as symbols of knowledge, tickets to (un)paradise, fairy tale poisons and folk remedies, and sci-fi symbionts, grafted from clones. This seemingly simple, homely fruit unfolds into complex layers – how do we parse inherited stories around sustenance, medicine, and colonial forestry? Through food preservation, what future are we planning? The Biomaterials Working Group Marcellus Armstrong Elizabeth A. Shores Cecilia McKinnon Theo Loftis Jazmyn Crosby The Biomaterials Working Group (BWG) is an art and research collective based in Lenapehoking / Philadelphia. They share an interest in exploring sustainable alternatives to plastics and toxic materials conventionally used in studio art practices, as well as a broad curiosity about the transformative potential of everyday materials used in unconventional ways. Various previous avenues of exploration include: algae-based bioplastics, bioconcrete, fermentation, natural pigments, kombucha leather, saltwater radio antennae, and more.  Stop in tomorrow and explore our current exhibition, Eco-Social Realism. What can Philly’s historic murals tell us? We caught up with curator Daniel Tucker (@miscprojects) and exhibiting artist Ricky Yanas (@rickyisnotavailable) to talk Eco-Social Realism: Historic Mural Activations, an exhibition that takes four early Mural Arts murals as a starting point for new work exploring their histories, neighborhoods, and present-day prompts. Watch to learn more about the exhibition, then experience it for yourself at @tiltinstitute, now on view through November 21. Follow @ecosocialseries for more from the Eco-Social Realism series. The exhibition features new work by artists José Ortiz-Pagán, Li Sumpter, Lori Waselchuk, Ricky Yanas & Grimaldi Baez.
