New Barbarian in You post about the wonders of fall. For this, I relied on the king of autumn-themed stories, Ray Bradbury, who I write about in Chapter 8 of my book, "The Barbarian in You." Adding his biographer, @samtweller

Despite living in a city devoid of fall wonders (Los Angeles), I can still travel towards a New England fall using my imagination (plus books, movies, poetry, and music) as my passport.

If you can travel for a feeling, then do so. If you can’t, fill that feeling with your imagination coupled by your favorite art. By opening our imaginations to wonder, we can live a more spiritual (and magical) existence.

Wherever you are, wherever you live, your capacity for wonder is up to you.

I've got another great book recommendation for you. "The Barbarian in You, Living with Vigor, Wonder and Fellowship," by Ed Hinman. Do you want to step out of the digital age that we find ourselves in? Ed's answer is to live more like our barbarian ancestors, with Vigor, Wonder and Fellowship. Be ready to have your idea and definition of "barbarian" changed. I'm taking this right from the jacket - "Hinman redefines barbarian as anyone who meets life with raw energy, joyful curiosity and deep connection." The book draws from a wide cast, Ralph Waldo Emerson to Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as Ed's own life experience. If you're ready to move toward a more deeply human way of life, read this book. It's a fast, enjoyable read. "The Barbarian in You" by Ed Hinman. @ed_hinman #thebarbarianinyou #vigorwonderandfellowship @_u.s._marines_ @usnavalacademy by @ed_hinman

The Shield Wall is a perfect metaphor for Fellowship. Because dear friends stand with you, by you, and for you when life starts firing arrows your way.

That is the heart of Chapter 11 in The Barbarian In You, entitled, “Medieval Shield Walls: Earn Your Friendships.”

The Chapter begins with this favorite quote from Charles Dickens: “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”

Deep and lasting friendships are conditional. The more we’re there for a dear friend the stronger the bond becomes—and vice-versa.

My dad is 81 and just gave up snow skiing after 76 years on the mountain.

He has skied every year from 1950 to 2026, from Iran to California, from cotton to Gortex. And during that time, he missed only one year of skiing — the year he served in Vietnam. And though his skiing is behind him, his vigor isn’t.

He still does his push-ups and shuffles around the neighborhood every morning.

Though our Vigor changes with age, it doesn’t end. As Barbarians we must find to harness its powers and flourish — any way we can.

Just keep moving, Barbarians!

One of my favorite places in one of my favorite cities: Eastern Cemetery in Portland, Maine.

People have been buried here since 1668. I wander among the old stones, skulls, angels, and poetry and feel the strange wonder that death can give us from a distance.

Up close, death is heartbreaking. From a distance, it whispers, “You are alive. Don’t waste it.”

That’s the idea behind the “Dark Wonders” chapter in my book, The Barbarian in You. Sometimes darkness brings us light.

@ed_hinman spent much of his 30s working and living in Los Angeles without close friends nearby. His military buddies were scattered across the country, and he realized he wasn't the only man missing meaningful friendships.

So he started a men's book club.
That was 13 years ago, and they still meet today.

Sometimes community doesn't appear on its own––you have to build it.

Why do I study History?

Reason #1: Wonder.
Reason #2: Fuel.
Reason #3: Perspective.

History is chalk full of famine, war, plague, and extreme daily violence. When I read about how incredibly hard it was to live in previous ages of history, I’m reminded that by comparison we live in an a Golden Age.

More than anytime before in history, we can say what we want, do what we want, and be who we truly are without a daily fear that we’ll starve through the winter and be killed by a roving band of bandits or armies.

The past reminds me to breathe deep with gratitude that I’m alive here and now, and to seize the day.

Did you choose your life or simply follow the checklist?

College. Job. Marriage. Kids.
No one explicitly tells us to do these things. It's societal expectations that have become so deeply embedded in our idea of what life is supposed to look like.

But sometimes the forces shaping our biggest decisions aren't obvious until we stop and look back––like fear and a lack of agency.

It makes us question, are we consciously choosing the lives we build, or are we following someone else's script?

New Barbarian in You Post: "Words That Bleed."

When a feral lyric cuts into you and the words seem to bleed with life, you levitate above the pavements of daily life into a realm that's creative, enchanting, and all your own.

In my latest "Barbarian in You" piece, featuring Townes Van Zandt, I write about why we need that occasional “Call of the Wild” message to add wonder to our daily lives.

"You don't have to make the journey alone. That's what fellowship is for." Ed Hinman

Ed's shield wall image stuck with us: a wall made not of bricks but of men. When life fires arrows, you will want your people beside you, which is why you show up for theirs first.

And when you are the one struggling? Reach out. Every time Ed has, the friend was grateful to be asked. You are not a burden. You are handing someone the gift of being needed.

It can feel selfish to pour energy into yourself. Ed Hinman reframed that for us completely this week.

You fill your own cup, Ed said, so you can give from the overflow, not the reservoir. When you are depleted, everything you give comes out of your reserves and eventually there is nothing left. When you are full, when you have got your vigor, your wonder, your people, you give from the surplus, and everyone around you gets a better version of you.

Ed calls the effect your bat signal. Do what you love with real intention and you project a frequency other people resonate with. You attract and inspire them just by being fully yourself. Self care, done right, turns out to be generosity.

And it works in the hard seasons too. Ed's image is the shield wall, a wall made not of bricks but of men. When life fires arrows you will want your friends beside you, which is exactly why you show up for them first. Then, when it is your turn to struggle, you reach out.

The part that stayed with us: every time Ed has reached out, the friend was grateful to be asked. You are not a burden when you ask for help. You are offering someone the gift of being needed. Dark seasons pass. You do not have to walk through them alone.
