It's about time I posted our full performance for Eddie's Barbarian in You 50th birthday and book launch! On my 50th birthday today, I'm grateful to be able to do all the things I love to do and so grateful for the love and support of family, friends, coworkers, and my aerial community. Eddie's message of living with vigor, wonder, and fellowship is truly a recipe for a better life. My mom has always said "it doesn't get any easier" and she's right. But we have choices to do one small thing each day to move through the trauma we have no doubt collected by 50, the feelings of being stuck, and the whatever else we're carrying around with us at any given moment. Today, I'm choosing your love! So thank you!!!! On to the next 50 years. My goal is to be ageless to 99 like my grandmother!! @ed_hinman spent much of his 30s working and living in Los Angeles without close friends nearby. His military buddies were scattered across the country, and he realized he wasn't the only man missing meaningful friendships.

So he started a men's book club.
That was 13 years ago, and they still meet today.

Sometimes community doesn't appear on its own––you have to build it.

Did you choose your life or simply follow the checklist?

No one explicitly tells us to do these things. It's societal expectations that have become so deeply embedded in our idea of what life is supposed to look like.

But sometimes the forces shaping our biggest decisions aren't obvious until we stop and look back––like fear and a lack of agency.

It makes us question, are we consciously choosing the lives we build, or are we following someone else's script?

It can feel selfish to pour energy into yourself. Ed Hinman reframed that for us completely this week.

You fill your own cup, Ed said, so you can give from the overflow, not the reservoir. When you are depleted, everything you give comes out of your reserves and eventually there is nothing left. When you are full, when you have got your vigor, your wonder, your people, you give from the surplus, and everyone around you gets a better version of you.

Ed calls the effect your bat signal. Do what you love with real intention and you project a frequency other people resonate with. You attract and inspire them just by being fully yourself. Self care, done right, turns out to be generosity.

And it works in the hard seasons too. Ed's image is the shield wall, a wall made not of bricks but of men. When life fires arrows you will want your friends beside you, which is exactly why you show up for them first. Then, when it is your turn to struggle, you reach out.

The part that stayed with us: every time Ed has reached out, the friend was grateful to be asked. You are not a burden when you ask for help. You are offering someone the gift of being needed. Dark seasons pass. You do not have to walk through them alone.

The friendships you want as a grown man are closer than they feel. The gap is almost never desire. It is just the effort of showing up.

Ed Hinman told us the story we keep repeating. Thirteen years ago, lonely for real friendship in Los Angeles, he cold invited the husbands and boyfriends of his wife's friends: bring a book you love, come to my place. They came. It is now around 25 men who gather every quarter around a fire.

What he discovered is that he was not alone in wanting it. Most of those men were quietly hoping for the same thing. And a shared thing made it work. You need what we ended up calling a ball: a reason to gather that is not just hang out. A run, a book, a project.

It is exactly like the gym. The resistance is all before you go. Once you are there it is easy, and you are always glad you did. Jon had a version of this the same morning we recorded, a no agenda sunrise run with a guy he had just met who happens to live in his town. Vigor, wonder, and fellowship in one hour.

We assume connection takes far more than it does. Just showing up is ninety percent of it.

Ed Hinman built a whole life on that line. Leaving the military, he skipped the expected paths and asked one question: what do I love? The answer led him to history, to writing, to a career that is uniquely his.

His test for whether a calling is genuinely yours: you would still do it if no one ever knew.

And a kind reminder. There is real honor in providing for your family too. You do not have to blow up your life. Just add one thing you love.

Most of us are not missing motivation. We are missing a little room for the things that make us feel alive.

Ed Hinman, Naval Academy grad, Marine, executive protection specialist, and author of The Barbarian in You, came on the show and gave us the cleanest framework we have heard for a life that actually flourishes. Three pillars: vigor (physical aliveness), wonder (awe and meaning), and fellowship (real connection). They are not abstractions. They are the literal chemistry your body rewards you with when you live the way you are built to.
