You ARE somebody. ✊🏽

In 1972, Reverend Jesse Jackson went on @sesamestreet to recite the “I am Somebody” poem, just a few years after he witnessed the horrific assassination of his mentor, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Throughout his entire life he shared this message with youth because he knew that before they ever kill your body, they will try to kill your spirit and your mind. But if youth believe that they ARE somebody, then they will also begin to believe they are WORTH fighting for and are DESERVING of liberation.

To all our youth:

YOU ARE SOMEBODY. Remember this. ✊🏽 taken in Las Vegas, Nevada by @edcolibre

🚨TW: Mental health, suic*de

The impact of immigrant detention does not limit itself to the detained individual, it ripples across entire families, communities, and even multiple generations after. 🦋

Yesterday I joined the @nvimmigrantcoalition at the Joint Session on Government Affairs to discuss the impact of immigrant detention on children and families.

The tea: 🧊& Core Civ*c were expected to present themselves and they didn’t show.

Federal judges in Nevada have stated that DHS & ICE have been “rebelling” by refusing to follow court orders calling for the release of detained immigrants. It is critical that we demand that they be held accountable & fight to protect our immigrant neighbors.

I’m always grateful for the coalition of orgs & community members that continue to organize to protect our communities like @aclunv @maketheroadnv @michaelgkagan @atharesq @_marywagner_ @thepeoplesmedic and Nevadans for the Common Good 🫶🏽

They tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds. 🌱

Graduation is always my favorite because as I watched our students cross the stage it is a reminder of our communities resilience, joy, love, and effort. It is a reminder that despite a history of trying to dim our light, we have remained unstoppable.

Congratulations to all the graduates!!

¡Si se pudo!

Remember this. 👏🏽

On this Indigenous People’s Day I remind myself of In Lak’Ech, a Mayan precept and that we are on the unceded territories of 28 (federally recognized) tribes in NV.

Tú eres mi otro yo / You are my other me.
Si te hago daño a ti / I do harm to you,
Me hago daño a mí mismo / I do harm to myself;
Si te amo y respeto / If I love and respect you,
Me amo y respeto yo / I love and respect myself.

From Henderson, Nevada to Erlangen, Germany, the alarming stories of ICE separating families is reaching far.

Months ago, I drew an #iceoutcomic in collaboration with @edcolibre as an attempt to speak out with the tools I have. This effort felt so small in the grand scheme of what was/is happening, but all the comic artists’ work reached @larsvontoerne all the way in Germany and he reached out to highlight the series in this year’s @comicsalon_er as a way to educate international audiences about what’s happening on the ground in the US.

The #iceoutcomics prompt was started by @woodmanmaynard trungles, @jasonwwalz and @seemybrotherdance and I’m so thankful and honored to bring attention to this major human rights issue along with these amazing artists.

Though these were released at the beginning of the year, ICE continues to impact our communities all over the country. Las Vegas friends, please follow @lvdefensa @edcolibre and @nvimmigrantcoalition for the latest updates and actions.

🧊 detained someone in Henderson yesterday

Yesterday around 6AM on Lake Mead by Eastgate masked agents shattered a Latino man’s window and detained them.

Just the night before, I asked Henderson city officials what they were doing to protect our immigrant neighbors, but they were convinced this isn’t happening in Henderson. And here we are.

Most recently @mromeronv spoke with the @thenevadaindependent and rather than ending the MOU costing Henderson residents to subsidize detentions with 🧊, she stated: “If the analysis shows costs are not being recovered, the City would switch to the 287(g) program, which is what Metro uses to meet all state and federal ICE laws.”

@marshallproj is calling this the “Shadow Surge” where 2,000 state & local law enforcement agencies are signing onto 287g agreements.

Our neighbors are being picked up, families are living in fear, 70+ immigrants are detained for ICE at the Henderson Detention Center, and officials still won’t act to protect our community from this terror.

The next general City of Henderson Council meeting is October 6th @ 4PM-5:30PM.

Enough is enough. The community has mailed hundreds of postcards, sent hundreds of emails, & given hours of public comment in opposition to collaborations with 🧊. Listen to your constituents, or we will respond accordingly come November 3rd.

We were on TV! 🤓

Thank you to @ozzy_mora from @8newsnow for featuring Co-Libre Education during our one year anniversary! Catch the rest of the story on Channel 8.

Did you know the Co-Libre Education logo is actually a painting I made 10+ years ago? I painted it when I was a doctoral student in Dr. @mujer_fiera ‘s class inspired by my favorite Colombian artist’s style, @guache_art .

Everything we do is fueled by the love, orgullo, & cariño we have for our community 🫶🏽 Thank you for helping us make this possible & celebrating this milestone with us!

We’ll be spending time with our OG partners at the @doloreshuertaresourcecenter on September 25 offering a College Prep Crash Course. Bring your parents, siblings, & primos. I’ll be sharing all the chisme I wish someone would have told me when I was considering college.
