Something a bit different today…I think anyone who loved my Legends show will love this, the heart swelling new album from Held By Trees. It’s an record that feels like the love child of Pink Floyd, Tears For Fears and The War On Drugs. It’s full of 80s optimism, that John Hughes film feeling, or the mullet-tastic polyphonic rush you’d get from a Yamaha DX7 keyboard. And in this age of limited attention, single songs, playlists and the concept of an album as an artistic entity sadly shifted, here’s an old fashioned record that feels like a journey and sounds like the songs belong together, but this sounds like it was made by people in love with life and not snorting coke and arguing with each other. #altrock #heldbytrees #positivity #indiemusic #80svibes by @eddytemplemorris

Holy shitballs I think this might be my favourite use of hammer dulcimer since @paul_hartnoll’s genius The Box pt 2 by Orbital. @sully.e64 has hit this one out of the park and into the windscreen of a 1995 Vauxhall Astra in the car park! Fuck me sideways I wish Xfm still existed so I could play the shit out of this on the radio but we’re growing into a kinda radio audience here and that’s heart warming. It’s been a stressful time of late, suddenly having no job and no income has a way of distracting a person, and when that person is already so easily distracted and knocked off kilter, it’s amazing I’ve done *anything* right since early August. This week I’d like to highlight three works that are relatively new, I appreciate our focus together has been in the warm glow of nostalgia and I feel like these three recommendations all have a reassuring tinge of the past about them, especially this, as it’s a cover of one of my favourite bands of all time, @tearsforfearsmusic whom I’ve been lucky enough to interview twice. @losersuk started off as my production moniker but when I started working with the incandescently brilliant Tom Bellamy, @thecoopertempleclause multi instrumentalist - it was his virtuoso musicianship and love of live performance which gave us the impetus to evolve into a live band. Tom brought another incredibly talented musician, singer, guitar player @paulmullen from @yourcodenameismilo and The Automatic and gave me the chance to work with two of the best musicians I’ve ever interacted with. I have to pinch myself with how lucky I was to have made four albums with these guys. Hope you like our cover. I only ever have two aims with covers. 1. Keep the song’s integrity and 2. What a tune this was and still is and by a dazzlingly brilliant producer who heartbreakingly took his own life. Many reading this now will have known Shem, he was such a shining light in the dance music scene and so friendly and approachable. We got on really well and talked a lot in the days I was at Radio One and MTV, he said I always lifted his spirits and made him feel better about being him and that made me happy. When we lost touch I was devastated to hear what happened to him. He really was the one that got away. I feel like we would have been fantastic friends now that I’ve been through my own depression and got so close to suicide myself. 🥺 Always remember we go THROUGH these things. We get to the other side. We arrive stronger. Wiser. Certainly more interesting for the journey. With that, please enjoy ‘The Lonely Traveller’ in your own time. In CD quality. I’m actually enjoying Heartbreak Week, it’s profoundly moving to turn things around with music. It’s what we do, right? …when things get tough, it’s friends and family and music - all of which connects us to something much bigger than us - which pick us up, dust us off and have us look to the horizon with a smile. I’m already thinking about what I’ll play in the next heartbreak week and I’ve really enjoyed all your comments with songs that move you. Something For The Weekend takes us back to my fatherland, my birth city and even the suburb I spent my first two years. Penarth, in Cardiff Bay and to the city’s most melodic son, @highcontrastuk - a Welsh national hero and a hero of the D&B scene in the modern era. For years I ended sets with his remix of Beach Boys God Only Knows and I think there’s a parallel between Lincoln and Brian Wilson, if only in their extraordinary ear for melody and musicality. D&B Week continues with another modern era hero @subfocus who crossed over from rock music as a teenager and into Drum & Bass with that rock energy that I love. He was, in fact, the second person to appear on a show of mine sporting a mullet. He was in very good company because the first was Jacques Lu Conte (Stuart Price) on MTV in 1998. Both are astonishingly talented producers that rank among the very best I’ve ever played on TV, Radio or at gigs. Nick played Secret Garden Party at least twice, or was it three times, memory can be hazy around those weekends 😜 But I’ll always be grateful for his support of the best independent festival ever. Had so many positive messages about Jungle Week, thank you! Here’s another belter for you. Back to ‘94 again and to the seminal V Recordings and co-founder, the legendary @djjjfrost - Leviticus ‘Burial’. What I loved about the @djpeshay tune I shared on Monday was the sonic layering, what I love about this is *cultural* layering. I can picture Frost walking along Kensal Road and Ladbroke Grove during 94 Carnival and hearing this roll out of every soundsystem. It’s one of the greatest tunes in anyone’s box or indeed life.
