“The Suffolk coast is among the most dynamic in the UK. Its ceaseless rhythms of growth and retreat, daily tides and seasonal storms, rupture the stories we tell ourselves about permanence and our place in the world.” Elizabeth Ferretti (@elizabethdferretti )

This post is part of @edge__land a two-year multi-disciplinary arts project and part of my own explorations into the historical, cultural, environmental and man-made changes on the Suffolk coast.

Living on the Edge - I began planning this book last year. Since then its design and content has changed and evolved considerably. Suffolk’s coastal landscape has always been shaped by the North Sea and its tides, with livelihoods and identity intrinsically tied to these. Lowestoft, in the north of the county has a long tradition of herring fishing going back to before the middle ages when herring was a food enjoyed by all, and even used as currency.

This artist’s book pays tribute to the women and girls, who came each year, primarily from Scotland and the Isles, following the herring fleets south to Lowestoft where they would work as gutters, preparing the fish to be sold on. They were the epitome of ‘living on the edge’.

By the 1960’s, due in part to over-fishing, Lowestoft’s herring trade had all but ended. For the Lowestoft community this decline was very significant causing a huge loss of identity and focus for the town and its inhabitants.

This book has a blue suede cover with foil blocking. it is hardbacked and constructed using a stab binding. The interior consists of pages of semi-transparent vellum paper and layered organza using photography and my own artwork. I wanted to capture through the transparent layering process, the ethereality of the sea with its waves and sea foam together with the haziness of memory, always looking through and into the next image. @edge__land

Here’s the little Redshank in colour, it was a bit tricky to keep the colours clean, but got there in the end. Colours are a mix of Permanent Red and Yellow Lake, Burnt Sienna and black and then a bit more black for the wooden post. #colours #redshank #birds #saltmarsh by @edge__land

This is me having a go at Carborundum printmaking over a weekend at the Sudbourne Printmakers studios. Great fun, despite the subject matter of my print being very serious… fire at Dunwich National Trust this summer 2026. #carburundumprint #workshop #fire #dunwichheath @edge__land This is part of Edge Land a multi-disciplinary art project looking at man-made and natural change in Suffolk from Lowestoft down to Felixstowe, and from the A12 east out to sea. by @edge__land

The Redshank is one of our beautiful wader birds found on saltmarshes and coastal wet grasslands. It is Amber listed because of loss of habitat, predators taking their eggs and climate change. The body of the bird is an etching and aquatint, and in the background is an impression of a textile pressed into soft ground and then etched in acid. Next step is to try and ink the plate up in colour and print it!#redshank #etching #birds #exhibition @edge__land

LAST FEW PLACES AVAILABLE FOR NEXT SATURDAY 3 OCTOBER – LINK IN BIO TO BOOK

What does it mean to write from the heart, to write from the mind? For me, it's the permission to express feelings, impressions, memories I've not given voice to. These could be stories of joy as well as more challenging ones – digging beyond the surface doesn't only mean shining a light into the dark. For example, working with the focus of change on the Edge Land project has challenged me to articulate thoughts and feelings, ideas that have been slow to mature. Over time they've coalesced into threads of insight.

Writing from the heart could be seen as a lofty aim. I see it as an honesty and a vulnerability that shines through our writing. The mind's role is to reorder these memories, impressions, emotions, interactions into narratives or poetry or script. And, by the way, there's good scientific evidence that turning thought into narrative results in health and psychological benefits.

What about place and change? These are our anchor points. Our relationship to place offers layers of internal mapping that include the physical place, our memories of it, its history, its geology, its plants, living beings... Place is how we understand ourselves. Change is time and story.

Our workshop next Saturday is a space to explore change and place in the setting of the wonderful Long Shop Museum. Our starting point is the Suffolk Coast, but you're not restricted in what you write about. What you write doesn't have to be 'important' either – an apparently simple memory tied to a place can be a portal to the unexpected. Above all, the workshops offer the chance to write in good company. In a time when our focus is pulled every which way, that is precious.

EDGE LAND WORKSHOP: PLACE AND CHANGE: WRITING FROM THE HEART AND MIND, SATURDAY 3 OCT IP16 4ES - with our wonderful hosts at the fabulous Long Shop Museum

In this workshop Vicky Proctor and I will be your guides as we explore the link between place and memory, and the connections between heart and mind and writing - such rich ingredients for the alchemy that is writing.

Whether you are writing memoir, fiction, poetry, non fiction or scriptwriting (Vicky will be your guide in that) - we hope this workshop will add to your writers' toolkit. And it is always fun to write in good company, isn't it.

There are a few tickets left for this event. The workshop is fully accessible, with accessible toilets and a steal at £6 per person - for which we have the wonderful Sustainable Development Fund of the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape to thank. And it could not be more appropriate as we explore our relationship with this beautiful coastal landscape.

After crossing by ferry we stopped at the old bridge looking across to the Armoury, and the other 'Labs' where tests were carried out on the triggers, shell casings, and parts for nuclear weapons.
Crossing the Bailey bridge you are on
the ancient shingle bank between the
wild north sea, river and marshlands,
which stretches 10 miles along the east coast, connected by a thread to the north.
On the Ness, the horizon stretches 180 degrees, not like on 'dry land', where there are trees, hedges, and houses crowding out the sky, all the normal pointers are gone.
There's no other place like the Ness –
From mist, showers, to blinding sun,
the relentless winds howl around the rails
of the Bomb Ballistic,
from where you can see everything.
Lab time has stopped, rusted over.
Is this the past, a bygone era,
of mutually assured destruction,
or a landscape of a desolate future?
