LAST FEW PLACES AVAILABLE FOR NEXT SATURDAY 3 OCTOBER – LINK IN BIO TO BOOK
What does it mean to write from the heart, to write from the mind? For me, it's the permission to express feelings, impressions, memories I've not given voice to. These could be stories of joy as well as more challenging ones – digging beyond the surface doesn't only mean shining a light into the dark. For example, working with the focus of change on the Edge Land project has challenged me to articulate thoughts and feelings, ideas that have been slow to mature. Over time they've coalesced into threads of insight.
Writing from the heart could be seen as a lofty aim. I see it as an honesty and a vulnerability that shines through our writing. The mind's role is to reorder these memories, impressions, emotions, interactions into narratives or poetry or script. And, by the way, there's good scientific evidence that turning thought into narrative results in health and psychological benefits.
What about place and change? These are our anchor points. Our relationship to place offers layers of internal mapping that include the physical place, our memories of it, its history, its geology, its plants, living beings... Place is how we understand ourselves. Change is time and story.
Our workshop next Saturday is a space to explore change and place in the setting of the wonderful Long Shop Museum. Our starting point is the Suffolk Coast, but you're not restricted in what you write about. What you write doesn't have to be 'important' either – an apparently simple memory tied to a place can be a portal to the unexpected. Above all, the workshops offer the chance to write in good company. In a time when our focus is pulled every which way, that is precious.
