🎲 A bit about me 🎲
As the UK Games Expo draws near and it is almost my 1-year instaversary, I thought a proper introduction, and a new profile picture, was in order.

So, hi! My name is Tom!

I am a huge lover of board games and I adore card games and anything light to medium weight. My favourite games are Root (@ledergames), Thief's Market (@pickpocketgames), Flamecraft Duals (@cbalchemy) and Harmonies (@libellud).

For my job, I work in leadership as a teacher in a primary school and, when we get a chance, develop board games with the children in my class.

I started 'Edge of the Board' as a way of sharing my passion and enjoyment of games and have quickly started spending far too long taking photos and writing reviews. I have had the opportunity to work with some fantastic publishers, who I am eternally grateful to for their trust. I also have been fortunate to become a member of the UK Review Circle (@ukbg_review_circle) and had the chance to play some incredible games - Fetching Feathers (@unfringedthings), Even Deeper Regrets (@tettixgames) and Fruit Boss (@weastcoastgames) have been particular favourites.

I recently took my love of board games further and started my own board game publishing company, House Rules Studio (@house.rules.studio), as a way of channelling some of my creative ideas. I have already learnt so many new skills doing this. My first game is nearly ready so do let me know if you would love to try them out!

I would be remiss to not thank the amazing @beth.tibbles for her incredible work on my new profile picture, and also for her awesome work on some branding for @house.rules.studio.

The best thing about this past year in gaming has been the connections and the incredible games I have had the chance to play.

As I have introduced myself properly, I would love to ask you all a question.

What are your favourite games? I would love to hear! by @edgeoftheboard

🪁 Introducing Tako 🪁
You may or may not have noticed that I have been taking a break from Instagram in the last few weeks. This is for many reasons, busy at work, changes in my personal life... But also because I have been hard at work finishing my debut game Tako!

The big day has arrived and you are ready to compete in the Great Tail-Wind Festival, held every year during winter.

Mixing card shedding and tableau building, each round, players compete to play the strongest hand of cards then immediately place these into their kite tail.

A beautiful kite tail is long, balanced and has many strands and is full of completed ornament patterns. It can be advantageous to finish first and receive one of the prestigious Sky Ribbons but, have caution. Fail to align your ornaments and you may find the Judges unimpressed.

Each round you must balance the race to shed cards and be the first to finish, whilst also scoring points. Cards left in your hand at the end are wasted and score negative points.

A labour of love, I am excited to see it out in the real world!

A huge thank you must go to the insanely talented @rachcartdesign who is not only wonderfully skilled but also a genuine joy to work with. The game would be nothing without her fantastic illustrations and I am sure you will agree they look great!

Tako is due to be released by my company @house.rules.studio at the end of July.

If you would like to review it, then please do reach out to me! 😊

Good luck and happy kite flying!

Today is #safarisaturday, a weekly celebration started by @short.stuff.boardgames and @nerdygirlgaming. This week’s theme is ‘Pollinators', chosen by @water.meeple.

I couldn't resist using a photo from Flora Funga @outsetmediagames @cheatwellgames @kedric_boardgame_design to celebrate the theme this week, especially with their use of the 'beeple'.

In honour of this game, and the theme, here are some facts about bees:

🐝 Bees pollinate many food crops by moving pollen between flowers as they collect nectar and pollen, helping plants produce fruits, seeds, and nuts.

🐝 They are especially effective pollinators because their fuzzy bodies pick up pollen easily, and many bees repeatedly visit the same type of flower during one foraging trip.

🐝 Bees support biodiversity by pollinating wildflowers and other native plants, which in turn provide food and habitat for insects, birds, and other wildlife.

Are you on team bumblebee?
Let me know!

Funga : @outsetmediagames

Funga is a pattern building game where you carefully place mushrooms into shared formations, trying to complete secret mission cards.

The details:
Title: Funga
Designer: Kedric Winks
Publisher: Outset Media
Player count: 2-4 players
Time: 15-20 minutes

The gameplay:
At the start of the game, players take a hand of mission cards showing different mushroom formations they are trying to create.

On your turn, you place one mushroom piece into the shared forest, either adjacent to existing mushrooms or overlapping matching mushroom types. Mushrooms can even merge together if they overlap correctly, creating larger connected patterns across the table.

If the exact arrangement shown on one of your mission cards appears anywhere in the forest after your placement, you immediately discard that mission card. Since everyone is building in the same space, players are constantly helping and disrupting each other’s plans at the same time.

The first player to complete all of their mission cards wins the game.

My thoughts:

This was a fun little game. I like how simple the rules are while still allowing interesting decisions. The overlapping and merging rules were my favourite addition and it made for some nice moments where you could score multiple cards.

There is a little balance between planning ahead and reacting to what other players are building. Sometimes another player accidentally sets up the perfect pattern for you, while other times they completely ruin what you were working towards.

It also helps that the mushroom artwork looks great on the table and gives the whole game a really cosy feel.

Overall, Funga is an accessible game with a fun puzzle. A nice filler, I definitely prefered Flora but this is a nice match to it in the box.

AD: this game was sent for the purposes of review via the @ukbg_review_circle but all views remain my own, unbiased thoughts.

This is also my entry to #firstimpressionsfriday by @nerdygirlgaming.

It's #ThreeGameThursday, started by the lovely @our_tabletop_home, and this week I’m sharing three recent surprises.

Flora Funga – @outsetmediagames @cheatwellgames @kedric_boardgame_design
A game I was sent for review, this game actually has two games in one. With a beautiful fold out magnetic board and lovely punchboard pieces, I have really enjoyed my plays of these games. My favourite has been Flora where you are building your own dandelions and the wind affects the board state.

Scales of Fate – @iv___studio
I have loved my recent plays of this with my friend. With beautiful presentation and pieces, the game is a pleasure to play, starting off simple on turn one and quickly ramping up. Moving your demigods around the shared space whilst trying not to reveal your intentions is great fun. I am very much in the camp of ignore them and hope they survive.

Bella Vista – @hachetteboardgamesuk @studio_h_games
A game where you are physically building a town with 3D buildings, Bella Vista is great fun. Trying to meet the different scoring conditions whilst also placing your buildings next to parks and making sure they are taller than their neighbours is really good fun. I would play this anytime.

Have you played any of these?
Which games recently surprised you?

Fruit Boss : @weastcoastgames

Fruit Boss is a quick card game about manipulating a market, building stacks and timing your collections.

The details:
Title: Fruit Boss
Designer: Dan Cassaro
Publisher: Weast Coast Games
Player count: 2–4 players
Time: 20–30 minutes

The gameplay:
Players take turns performing up to 2 actions each round, using cards from their hand to manipulate the shared market.

Fruit cards are added to matching stacks in the market, increasing their value, while players can also combine stacks, slide them between stalls or use special Maneki-neko cards to remove cards from play.

Whenever a stack grows larger than an adjacent stack containing 2 or more cards, players collect the lower value stack into their personal collection. However, stacks can only grow so large before they topple, discarding themselves and a neighbouring stack from the market entirely.

Wild Star Fruit cards can count as any fruit suit, helping create bigger collections and better scoring opportunities.

At the end of the round, players score only 3 fruit suits from their collection, multiplying stack size by the highest value card within it. Any extra suits count against you, creating a nice decision between gathering cards and gathering too many. The player with the highest score at the end wins

My thoughts:
This is such a clever little game and another great title from Weast Coast.

I really enjoyed how the market feels. Every card changes your decisions, and there is constant tension between building stacks for yourself and accidentally setting up opportunities for other players.

The toppling is great because it creates this nice push your luck element where stacks can suddenly disappear if players get too greedy.

There is also more tactical depth here than I expected for such a quick game. Deciding when to collect, when to sabotage and which fruit suits are actually worth committing to becomes surprisingly important.

Overall, Fruit Boss is a great little card game with loads of interaction and clever scoring. A really fun filler.

It is #MysteryMonday, started by @justthreemeeple and hosted by @obsessedwithboardgames, and this week's theme 'Scoundrels and Scallywags' was chosen by @thegamecupboard.

I don't have many pirate themed games in my collection but I do have a game that includes this fantastic group of rogue like scoundrels who would be happy to steal your possessions and leave you on the curb.

Will you be able to guess the game correctly?

🎉 The answer to my last Mystery Monday was... Ninja, Hamster, Apocalypse, Disco @partysnailgames. Congratulations to everyone who guessed correctly and thank you to everyone who commented and took part!

Today is #safarisaturday, a weekly celebration started by @short.stuff.boardgames and @nerdygirlgaming. This week’s theme is ‘Animals with shells', chosen by @ahboardgames.

With the recent arrival of Even Deeper Regrets @tettixgames, I have been playing the base game and expansion a whole bunch this week. This is one of the cards from the base game but is a particular favourite as it is also a crustacean you can catch on Animal Crossing, a game I have sunk countless hours into.

In honour of this game, and the theme, here are some facts about crabs:

🦀 Spider crabs can live up to 100 years in the wild and are slow moving, non aggressive creatures.

🦀 The Japanese Spider Crab can grow up to 3.7 metres big and can weigh up to 20kg.

🦀 Spider crabs like to decorate their shells with seaweed and sponges to help their camouflage.

🦀 They are omnivores and feed on algae, plants, shellfish, sea cucumbers and carrion.

🦀 They have 10 legs, making them a decapod, with the front pair often used as claws.

Are you a fan of a crab?

Flora : @outsetmedia

Flora is a light game where players grow dandelions across a shared board, trying to complete mission cards.

The details:
Title: Flora
Designer: Kedric Winks
Publisher: Outset Media
Player count: 2 - 4 players
Time: 15 - 20 minutes

The gameplay:
Players draft 8 mission cards at the start of the game, each showing different buds, flowers and seed heads that must appear on the same plant.

On your turn, you place dandelion pieces onto the shared board following the plant life cycle. Plants hold buds, buds hold flowers and flowers hold seed heads.

A bee marker moves along a pebble track after every turn. Depending on which row the bee is on, players place 1, 2 or 3 pieces each turn, causing the board state to change as the game progresses.

Whenever the exact combination shown on one of your mission cards appears anywhere on a plant, you immediately discard that card, regardless of who placed the final piece.

Certain spaces on the bee track trigger wind, blowing away all seed heads along with any flowers and buds beneath them, leaving only the plant behind.

The first player to discard all 8 mission cards wins. If the bee reaches the end first, the player with the fewest remaining cards wins.

My thoughts:
I had a really lovely time with this game and thought it was a really nice little puzzle.

The rules are simple but there is lots of interaction because everyone is building on the same plants. You are constantly balancing your own cards while trying not to accidentally help everyone else complete theirs. I really like that in a game.

I also really liked how the bee track changes how the game feels. Placing one piece early on before placing several pieces later on was really enjoyable as the game developed. I also liked how the wind starts resetting parts of the board.

Overall, Flora is a light and quick pattern building game with a lovely theme. A really nice filler game.

It's #ThreeGameThursday, started by the lovely @our_tabletop_home, and this week I’m sharing three brain burners!

Thief's Market – @pickpocketgames
An incredible game that I have loved playing recently. Each round, the first player cuts the dice and first player token into piles or takes it all. Other players can then steal but must discard one dice back to the centre. After every one has resources, the first player then buys from the market, chaining cards and dice altering powers together. A stunning game, no notes.

LOTRTTTG: Two Towers – @officedoggames
What a brain burner. Having played and loved the first game, I was desperate to jump into the second. Save to say that the chapter with Grishnakh well and truly stumped me for several attempts. A great game to play with friends, the designers have introduced new mechanics and made this a masterpiece.

Golf – cards by @thirdway_industries
I love playing cards and used to have a huge number of decks until a large cull. I recently was sent these cards @thirdway_industries, via @ukbg_review_circle, and have had a blast playing all manner of games with them. However, my favourite game to play is Golf, where you aim to score the fewest points possible.

Have you played any of these?

It's #WildcardWednesday, started by @han_playsgames, and this week’s theme, 'Let's roll and write', was chosen by @jenplayssolo.

So, I have a confession... I don't have a single roll and write game in my collection 😅

However, I do have a lot of games that require dice to play... And you can write your answers... Therefore, I have created a quiz!

Can you name each of the games that use dice?
Let me know your guesses and how many you think you got right!

Today, I am reviewing something a little bit different - playing cards.

Sent from @thirdway_industries, via @ukbg_review_circle, this is their Betrayer deck and was an excellent opportunity to revisit some of my favourite card games. I used to have a large collection of decks until recently. However, the quality of these is excellent and got my collection urges flowing.

Titled Betrayer Veritas, this deck is the last in their Betrayer line. It is supposed to represent the change and inversion of all things, represented by the back story and by the inverted colours - diamonds and hearts are black and clubs and spades are red.

Each of the suits also has an ominous and tragic tale:
♥️ Hearts represent a noble prince who shattered many hearts, a pretty dryad who loves only herself and a king who changes his mind and hurts his people in the process.

♠️ Spades represent a nobleman who became a wanderer, an angel who severed her own wings and a hollow king that was never really good.

♦️ Diamonds represent a noble warrior that became a mercenary, a chaste lady who became a concubine and a young idealist that became a rich tyrant.

♣️ Clubs represent a conspirator who rose to the top, a poor lady who became an empress and a king who promised love but only delivered death.

These have been great to play with, Their linen finish and thickness is great and they shuffled well both by hand and in the card shuffler. The card art is vibrant and bold and, whilst not to my taste, is visually striking. The inverted suits were also a neat twist and I loved the backstory behind each of them.

These are well worth checking out!
