Making at EOW

Members use the workshop to build, repair, prototype, and develop their own work across woodworking, metalwork, textiles, and fabrication.

The space includes access to woodworking tools, a paint floor, pattern cutting table, domestic and industrial sewing machines, CNC, laser cutting, MIG welding, and a wood lathe.

Some projects are simple, others use machines like the CNC or laser cutter for more precise work.

To access the workshop, members take out an annual membership, which includes a basic machine induction. Once set up, workshop time can be booked on a PAYG basis.

Learning at EOW

At Edinburgh Open Workshop, you can access the space through classes and workshops, no membership required.

We run practical sessions for all levels, from complete beginners through to more experienced makers developing specific skills.

Workshops cover a range of hands-on disciplines including woodworking, metalwork, welding, sewing, upholstery, pottery, DIY, and digital fabrication.

We also work with resident makers and tutors who host their own specialist workshops in the space throughout the year.

We’re a shared makerspace in Leith.

People come here to work on their own projects using tools and equipment across woodworking, metalwork, CNC, textiles, and fabrication.

🎸 Not your average workshop project!

We're always amazed by the things our Pay As You Go members create in the workshop.

This electric guitar is the latest example, taking shape in our woodworking space. We particularly love how the natural grain and markings in the timber have been incorporated into the design, making it a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

It's always exciting to see the variety of projects our members bring through the doors, and the creativity and craftsmanship that goes into them.

Go SEE SHARE: Maker Spaces

How can maker spaces share resources, knowledge and ideas?

Join us at Edinburgh Open Workshop on Thursday 22 October as we share what we’ve learnt from visiting three London maker spaces: BLOQs, Blackhorse Workshop and POW.

Funded by @creativescots through the Go SEE SHARE Fund, the evening will include a presentation, Q&A and a chance to chat with others working in maker spaces and creative hubs.

We’ll share ideas from our visits and open up a conversation about how we can learn from one another and explore resource sharing across the UK.

NEW COURSE 🔥 Weld Your Own Hairpin Legs

Fancy trying your hand at welding – and coming away with something you can use at home?

Over two Wednesday evenings, welding tutor Gavin from @models_and_props will introduce you to the basics of MIG welding and metalwork as you make your own set of four steel hairpin legs.

With their simple mid-century look, the finished legs can be added to a tabletop or other surface to create a completely unique piece of furniture.

No previous welding experience needed – all tuition and materials are included.

LAST CHANCE: Woodturning Lathe Introduction @edinburghopenworkshop

Final tickets available for my first class with the Edinburgh Open Workshop. This class is a relaxed, hands-on woodturning workshop series to get you started with the basics of lathe turning - in the first set we will create a wooden candlestick (perfect for gifting at Christmas!)

Turning is the basis of everything I do, and this is the start of a number of classes I’ll be teaching - so come along to get the basics covered before we move on to bigger projects!
