Hello! Maybe you recognize me from my author page, but in case you don’t, I’m Laura A. Barton, a Canadian indie fantasy author and long-time word nerd who loves helping other authors with their stories. So now I’m offering editing and light marketing services to do just that!

When I say this has been a long time coming, I mean a LONG time. I’ve been thinking about delving into the editing space for a while and have decided to just go for it.

As I say on the slides, I’ve been doing alpha and beta reading, plus some critique partner work, for so long, and I love it. I can’t wait to continue that work in this new way.

Hey there! I’m Laura A. Barton, a Canadian editor and indie fantasy author looking forward to working with authors to make their stories shine.

Best fit would be character-driven fantasy novels set in magical worlds, but I also love dystopian elements and dashes of romance.

If you use genAI in any part of your process (ideating, writing, editing, marketing, character art, covers, etc.), we will not be a good fit as this is a NO genAI zone.

Editing has been something I’ve been debating doing for a long, long time. Yet, even as I dove in earlier this year, I was nervous. I get how difficult it can potentially be to take a chance on someone who’s only just started offering their services.

Welp… 🫪

This editing project is an interesting one because I’m only coming in at the proofreading stage. Apart from reading the first book in this romance duet, I have no knowledge of this second half of the story. So I’m discovering as I go and on the edge of my seat waiting for it all to be revealed.

Hashtags or keywords on your social posts? KEYWORDS!

Social media platforms are shifting to be more like search engines to keep us on the platforms longer, and so how they categorize and push out content has changed from the hashtag days, too.

If you want to hear more about keywords, drop a comment. Part of my job in marketing was search engine optimization of content, meaning LOTS of keyword stuff. by @editswithlaura

I don’t know about all of you, but I’ve loved books since I was a kid. Scholastic Book Fairs were the best days at school. Getting new and new-to-me books brings me so much joy. Just being around books feels so good.

Visual hooks are a super simple way to add a bit of dynamics to your content and better the chance at stopping someone’s scroll. Give it a shot!

The irony of me using the FaceTime example in this video is I literally FaceTime no one. In fact, I rarely use my phone for calls at all. 😂 by @editswithlaura
