POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Under the leadership of the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okphebholo, the Edo State Government, through the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) and its Executive Secretary, Dr. Coulson Oahimire Osoikhia, has partnered with an Independent Researcher Dr. Maureen O. Anyanwu to conceptualize, design, and deploy the OMO-SHINE referral application, developed with community participation. The app, which is the first of its kind in Edo State, reflects the original concept of primary health care, which integrates facility and community-based programmes.

Carrying forward the slogan "Catch Them Young, Catch Them at Birth!", OMO-SHINE has already been piloted successfully. The initiative supports the Governor's SHINE Agenda, which promotes sustainable healthcare, inclusion and community empowerment. Its health component aligns with the philosophy of primary health care, which is rooted in affordability, access and community involvement. The need for such a tool lies in the realities of care at community level.

Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) remain trusted providers in rural and underserved communities. Yet weak referral links between TBAs and health facilities have often led to missed opportunities for timely newborn immunization. These gaps in referral and maternal care have contributed to missed vaccinations and to preventable infant illness and death. Against this background, the challenge was clear: how could informal community care be bridged with formal health facilities to ensure that every child receives lifesaving interventions from birth?

Finding an answer began with research. Earlier investigations had revealed persistent gaps in maternal and child health delivery at the grassroots. In response, Dr. Anyanwu, a community-based and community-driven health systems specialist and digital health innovator, conceptualized and designed the OMO-SHINE project. Her mission is to drive equity in maternal and child health through innovative strategies and solutions, and she carried the vision from idea to reality.

EDO STATE AND PARTNERS HOST CO-CREATION WORKSHOP TO STRENGTHEN SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME AND IMPROVE HPV VACCINATION COVERAGE.

The Edo State Government, through the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA), in collaboration with John Snow Incorporated (JSI), convened a co-creation workshop at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) Friday the 4th of September, 2026 to strengthen the implementation of the School Health Programme (SHP) and improve HPV vaccination uptake across the state.

Representing the Executive Secretary EDSPHCDA, Dr. Coulson Osoikhia, the Director of Disease Control and Immunization, Dr. Eseigbe Efeomon, delivered a keynote presentation where he emphasized that schools are indispensable cornerstones for delivering health services to children, He noted that embedding routine HPV vaccination within the broader SHP framework will ensure sustainability and improve uptake. Dr. Eseigbe highlighted that cervical cancer, though a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Nigeria, is largely preventable through early vaccination. He further stated that schools provide the most strategic platform to reach nine-year-old girls while also strengthening other child health interventions.

The workshop stressed the need to move beyond campaign-style interventions toward a comprehensive, school-anchored health system that delivers multiple services, from routine physical screenings. nutrition services to health education and immunization. By creating School Health Clubs as health hubs within schools, Edo State aims to drive peer-to-peer learning, strengthen awareness, and foster community participation.

EDSPHCDA and Partners Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 2026

Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, in partnership with UNICEF, joins the global community to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 2026, observed every year from August 1–7.

The theme of year 2026 World Breastfeeding Week is *Breastfeeding for a sustainable state in life: Strengthen what works.

According to the NDHS Nigeria 2024, only 29% of babies are exclusively breastfed, while Edo State is 13.3%. This means many children may face a higher risk of malnutrition, infections, poor growth and stunting.

Breast milk alone provides 100% of the nutrients and water** a baby needs during the first six months of life. Giving water, formula or other foods before six months can expose a baby to infections and undernutrition.

Exclusive breastfeeding supports healthy growth, brain development, strong immunity and better learning outcomes. It also helps protect children from hunger, obesity and diseases later in life.

Good nutrition must begin from pregnancy and continue through infancy, childhood and adolescence. A well-nourished child has a better chance of succeeding in school, earning a good income and contributing to national development.

Breastfeed your baby exclusively from birth to six months. After six months, continue breastfeeding while introducing safe and nutritious complementary foods.

A small act today can make a big impact for a lifetime.
