Campus is showing its prettiest autumnal side for our upcoming Open Day 😍🍃

💜
THIS SATURDAY - 10th of October 2026
💜
Come and meet with our tutors and students from the BA Education and the BA Early Years Education.
💜
If you'd like to be a teacher, you can take this three-year BA + the one-year PGCE afterwards to become a qualified teacher.

Not sure yet? Take some time to explore the different ways of studying education and early childhood, in the fields of sociology, philosophy, politics, and more.

It's more important than ever that we take a pause and critically reflect on education and society, and how we might transform society for the better through the power of education.

Or working with children / working in education, but not teaching? There are different possibilities that our students have pursued further: speech and language therapy, play therapy, forest schooling and outdoors education, sports coaching, social work, pastoral care, youth & families support, museum education, and more. Come check it out!!

Picture of our Early Years practice classroom!

Our early years specific modules of our BA Early Years Education will take place in this dedicated classroom. (Don't worry, there are adult-size tables and chairs in this room too!)

This lecture and seminar room is enriched by a wealth of learning resources specific to early years, to stimulate active and immersive learning in our degrees.

It's a wonderful space to try things out, practice activities informed by research and theory on early years, and see the world through different perspectives of childhood development.

💫 Come see on our next Open Day on October 10th and meet our tutors 💫

It's Welcome Weeeeeeek!

That means our new first-year students are finding their new home on campus, figuring out where all the rooms are, and making new friends. It's wonderful to see and we've organised sunny weather for extra good vibes!

We're also excited to see our second-year students again (tomorrow) and our final-year students (on Friday) of our Education and Early Years undergraduate courses for their 'welcome back' activities. This is a conference-style day to kick off the year right.

We really want our students to feel inspired & aspirational going into a whole new year of study. We have alumni spotlights lined up, careers guidance, and updates on our new generative AI principles, plus tips and staring points for a successful year.

See you all soon!

One thing we love about working in education is learning from each other: colleagues with specific subject expertises and a passion for high-quality teaching. As staff, we have multiple days each year where we get together as a Faculty or University and have a conference-style day with panels and workshops as our staff CPD. Learning from each other and sharing experiences is the best way to grow as a community.

This was our Education Day last week – starting the year right!

Here you see Dr Laura Clarke, our Director of the Institute of Education, discussing the importance of active and immersive learning.

The panel was chaired by Dr Cathy Gower, our Dean of Faculty, who made sure to include ideas on embodied learning.

The day also included the launch of our Generative AI Statement : eight values and principles that guide our use of artificial intelligence.

This week we’re excited to welcome our new first-year students, and welcome back continuing students for the start of the academic year. The campus is alive – more to come!

Do we still need school uniform?

Our open day visitors seem to think so! But what's beyond the yes or no? The most commonly used word in response to this question was equality. But those on the yes and those on the no had different definitions for what equality means in the context of school uniform.

Our yes... buts were a big topic of conversation at the open day too! For example, visitors reflected on the time it takes to enforce a rule, another said that the need for uniform isn't necessary the same as a good idea!

Lots to think about. What do you think? by @edstudies_uow

In their final year of study, our Education students get a chance to develop their leadership skills in a project or organisation of their choice.
⚡
Our final year Education student Marika completed her leadership project with the Japanese Society, @uowjapansociety - supporting and organising intercultural learning and inclusive participation.
💜
Through events like origami workshops, Japanese students learned about their own culture while UK students engaged actively with oni and other designs, enabling active participation and multicultural sharing. It shows the opportunity of education beyond classroom contexts to stimulate safe and positive environments for cultural learning.
⚡
Marika says : "I intend to take this approach further in my future practice, particularly in designing intercultural activities that prioritise accessibility, engagement, and shared experience."

💜💜💜

Pictured here are the Setsubun event, the Pictogram Karuta workshop, and further activities with visiting students from the University of Kitakyushu.

Sugoi, tanoshikatta! 😊
