EdTrust-West Executive Director, Dr. Christopher J. Nellum, shared a powerful message on stage at #EdEquityForum2026 about the power of advocacy.

Advocacy works because we make it work. Because for decades, for centuries, people have put their bodies on the line. And because advocates keep showing up.

The pushback to when we speak up? That’s a clear sign that it’s working.

As we gather with hundreds of fellow advocates and commemorate EdTrust-West’s 25th anniversary, we’re reminded that now is a time to keep showing up. by @edtrustwest

#LatinxHeritageMonth

In 2017, “The Majority Report: Supporting the Educational Success of Latino Students in California” provided an extensive look at how the state’s largest ethnic group was faring at every level of California’s education system. We released an updated fact sheet in 2024 showing that eight years later, too many of the findings remain the same.

Read the first report today, then join our mailing list to be the first to access the next report in the series and stay connected to the research, stories, and solutions driving progress for Latinx students across California: edtrustwest.info/subscribe

Educators of color make a measurable difference for students; yet, they remain underrepresented in California classrooms. Board resolutions are one of the most direct tools school boards have to change that.

Join us on October 22 for a webinar to dig into our new Board Resolutions Toolkit (edtrustwest.info/board-reso-guide) and hear from a panel of board members and leaders on what it takes to move a resolution from idea to adoption.

A new paper from the High-Quality Instructional Materials Learning Partners Coalition (HQIM-LPC), Realizing California’s Vision for Mathematics: The Role of Curriculum-Based Professional Learning, explores how curriculum-based professional learning (CBPL) can support effective implementation across California.

The paper offers a California-specific vision for CBPL, recommendations for strengthening professional learning, examples of what this vision can look like in practice, and policy priorities and potential funding opportunities to support implementation statewide. Read it here: edtrustwest.info/HQIM-resources

📅 Join our colleague, Rachel Ruffalo, Deputy Director of Strategic Advocacy at EdTrust-West, on October 29, from 12 to 1 p.m. PT, for a conversation on how curriculum-based professional learning can help bring California’s math vision to life. Register here: edtrustwest.info/Math-Vision-webinar

#Throwback to our Executive Director, Dr. Christopher J. Nellum, speaking at the annual Tipping Point Community breakfast in San Francisco about how important it is that every young person in California gets an excellent education.

Educational opportunity and educator diversity go hand in hand. California students benefit when they see themselves reflected in the classroom and when schools are staffed by talented educators from diverse backgrounds.

🔗 Earlier this week EdTrust-West released a new resource that offers school board members, district leaders, and advocates actionable tools, including sample board resolution language, to help recruit, support, and retain educators of color. Students thrive when they learn from educators who reflect their rich racial, cultural, and linguistic identities.

Yet while nearly 80% of California students are students of color, only 40% of teachers are teachers of color. Local action can change that.

Our new guide provides practical tools for recruiting and retaining educators of color across California.

Last week, JBMF Board Secretary Dr. Christopher J. Nellum and his team at EdTrust-West led the organization’s 25th Anniversary Education Equity Forum in San Diego.

As Executive Director of EdTrust-West, Dr. Nellum leads a team dedicated to dismantling the racial and economic barriers embedded in California’s education system. The Forum brought advocates, educators, and policymakers together to build community, share inspiration, and leave with real ideas to take back to their communities, campuses, and schools.

When Dr. Nellum took the stage, he offered a line that stuck with us: “Equity is not ideology. Equity is really about student success.”

Twenty-five years in, EdTrust-West remains at the forefront of educational equity in California — creating space for the people doing this work to move past fear and into collective action, all while nurturing joy. We’re honored and grateful to have Dr. Nellum’s leadership on our own Board, and we’re celebrating alongside EdTrust-West as they mark this milestone.

San Diego is a region full of incredible assets, richness, and possibility — and yet, deep inequities in education continue to shape opportunities for too many students. We’re grateful to our partners at the San Diego Foundation for naming both truths and for working alongside EdTrust-West toward a more equitable future for students across the region. 💛 Partnership is how we turn our shared commitment into action. #EdEquityForum2026 #SanDiego #EquityInEducation #EdTrustWest #Partnership CaliforniaEducation by @edtrustwest
