EdTrust-West is committed to advancing policies and practices to dismantle the racial and economic barriers embedded in California’s education system

2026 Policy Update!

Three of the four bills prioritized by the College For All Coalition (CFAC) earlier this year passed, advancing efforts to make higher education more accessible and equitable for California students. Here’s a look at the outcomes and what they mean for students:

📚 AB 2766 (Ahrens) — SIGNED INTO LAW
Expands campus housing support for foster youth and students experiencing homelessness.

💰 AB 2422 (Caloza) — SIGNED INTO LAW
Gives students more time to resolve financial aid delays without facing penalties that could disrupt their education.

🎓 AB 1871 (Fong) — SIGNED INTO LAW
Expands dual enrollment opportunities, helping high school students earn college credit.

💼 AB 713 (Solache) — VETOED
The veto means undocumented students may continue facing barriers to on-campus employment at California public colleges and universities, limiting their ability to cover educational costs, gain work experience, and build financial stability.

The passage of three bills marks progress, but the veto of AB 713 reminds us that barriers to higher education remain. CFAC will continue working alongside legislative champions and partners to advance policies that make college accessible, affordable, and equitable for every California student.

Thank you to our PIP Coalition partners for leading a thoughtful talanoa on advancing Pacific Islander student success at @edtrustwest’s Education Equity Forum a few weeks ago! And to our partners who attended the Forum representing our Pasifika community.

The session spotlighted efforts across California, including the work underway at San Bernardino City Unified School District, El Camino College, and Mt. SAC to strengthen support and expand opportunities for Pasifika students across TK–12 and higher education. The conversation also highlighted the important contributions of @island.grad and @nhpiec in supporting Pacific Islander students and communities.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation, and to our coalition partners for their continued leadership and commitment to advancing educational opportunities and outcomes for Pacific Islander students across California. We are out here!

Another CAUSA conference in the books! 💪🏽

Union leaders from across California came together to share learnings, strengthen our collective voice, and continue advocating for the administrators who lead our schools every day. Together, we are stronger! ✊🏽

A special thank you to Richard Barrera, candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the superintendents of Sweetwater Union High School District, San Diego Unified School District, and Chula Vista Elementary School District for joining us and supporting these important conversations.

There was an amazing education session on the state of education budget in California by Raquel Morales from Ed-Trust West.

📸 Proud to have union leaders from UAOS, WCCAA, and UASF representing the Bay Area!

Joined by AACV, AASD, AASU, AALA/Teamsters Local 2010, and UPE!

When we come together, we move forward — united in our commitment to supporting school leaders and strengthening public education across California. ❤️

Big news from PIE Network’s annual summit. EdTrust took home THREE awards this year!

🛡️ EdTrust (National) — Best Defense, for the Education Protection War Room Coalition: Holding the Line for 50 Million Students Against Federal Attacks on Public Education

🔍 @edtrustwest — Best Kept Secret, for their Black Student Success Data Tool

📚 @edtrustma — Game Changer Campaign of the Year, for the Mass Reads Coalition: Winning Evidence-Based Literacy for Every Massachusetts Student

These wins reflect what EdTrusters do best, defending students’ rights, shining a light on the data that drives equity, and building coalitions that move the needle on literacy. We’re proud of our teams and energized to keep this work going.

In a Nation of Promise, every student has a well-resourced school, strong academic support, well-trained teachers, and a path to success in both college and career.

Getting there means changing the stories that shape whose potential we recognize and whose education we invest in. A student’s race, ethnicity. family income, or ZIP code should never determine what we believe they can achieve or who gets the resources to learn.

That’s why EdTrusters joined ComNet last week, learning alongside people across organizations who are advancing communications strategies to change lives and drive advocacy.

We’re sharing ideas and sharpening the tools we’ll bring back to our work: telling stories that challenge assumptions, amplifying student voices, and moving people to action.

Every student has promise. Together, we can build a nation that delivers on it.

Last week, JBMF Board Secretary Dr. Christopher J. Nellum and his team at EdTrust-West led the organization’s 25th Anniversary Education Equity Forum in San Diego.

As Executive Director of EdTrust-West, Dr. Nellum leads a team dedicated to dismantling the racial and economic barriers embedded in California’s education system. The Forum brought advocates, educators, and policymakers together to build community, share inspiration, and leave with real ideas to take back to their communities, campuses, and schools.

When Dr. Nellum took the stage, he offered a line that stuck with us: “Equity is not ideology. Equity is really about student success.”

Twenty-five years in, EdTrust-West remains at the forefront of educational equity in California — creating space for the people doing this work to move past fear and into collective action, all while nurturing joy. We’re honored and grateful to have Dr. Nellum’s leadership on our own Board, and we’re celebrating alongside EdTrust-West as they mark this milestone.

SPAA at the Education Equity Forum! ❤️

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and make sure student-parent voices are part of the conversation. We also participated in the Fearing Less in Action workshop, reflecting on fear, self-trust, and taking small steps forward.

A special thank you to Elzbeth and the SDSU Women’s Resource Center for inviting us and making it possible for SPAA to attend! 🥰
