We’re pleased to introduce EFE (@efebyefe), our current artist-in-residence, working out of STUDIO 1 throughout the month of June.

During his time at 99 Canal, he has been preparing new work for his exhibition, “ Under a Plantain Tree: Notes on Liberation” curated by @margaritalilarosa and produced by JCAL Program Associate @njarianderson at @jamaicaartscenter

EFE is an artist whose practice moves between object-making and social inquiry, registering moments of resilience across Caribbean histories.

Central to his work is POORDESIGN – an “architecture of survival” based on extreme resourcefulness that draws from the informal and often overlooked strategies that emerge where (formal) systems fail. Through the use of found materials, he reframes these practices as sites of knowledge, agency, and cultural continuity. taken in Chinatown, New York, New York by @efebyefe

LAS CAOBAS PARK looks at the historical dilemma of ‘identity’ within the Dominican Rep. as a point to be solved.

the search for a vernacular true to Place digs beyond colonial inheritance and towards deeper grounds… that of Taíno culture, and the BATEY specifically: a sports arena for batú (a native ball game), and the beating heart of Taíno society.

the batey (video simulation, s6) held structured play and open gathering in the same breath: central, game-oriented, and deliberately open-ended. this is where Taino life happened – recreation, ceremony, ritual, and from which entire settlements grew outward. the structure, too, speaks: a nod to the Yanomami shabono, and the deeper Amazonian lineage the Taíno carried with them.

as an initiative without a brief, the project planted its direction here — from programming and flexibility of use, to rootedness in an authentic image for a [new] Dominican architecture.

LAS CAOBAS PARK — San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Rep. (2023-ongoing)

with vitilla rivalries spilling onto the streets and cardio routines paved along the area’s sloping ground, the proposal starts with what’s already there, and expands it.

growing its area from 918 m² ➡️ 1,439 m², the new park design is sheltered by a series of pitched roofs salvaged from corrugated metal panels (to be sourced straight from neighbors) that reinterprets the traditional ‘dos aguas’ archetype. below lies the vitilla field – a new public space suggestive of the structured rhythm of the game, yet ambiguously unmarked for informal, everyday activity. a running track along the newly extended edges traces the jogging path locals take daily, helping both activate the space and ensure street safety. and where the roof pitches inward, rainfall cascades… turning Caribbean rain showers (and childhood memories) into a spatial experience.

beneath it all tho runs a deeper current: the center of #Taino civic culture, and the conceptual foundation of the project… the ‘batey’.

HOME is where the work starts — for the past three years I’ve been reimagining LAS CAOBAS PARK, a local park in the heart of the community that raised me in San Pedro de Macorís (DR).

at its core is a first-of-its-kind ‘vitilla field’, dedicated to the beloved street game enjoyed by all ages across the country, and a testament to the city’s longstanding baseball tradition.

this past February, I flew down to present the proposal to my folk for the first time. we gathered, we talked, and we listened – going through the project’s scope, its meaning, and the larger cultural ambitions behind it. the feedback was real, the conversation was honest, and the direction was fully welcomed (!!!).

this was not a mandate in the process, but a personal choice to include and hear out those who the space is designed for. above is the recap… a brief look at the meeting and the reasoning behind the effort. taken in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic by @efebyefe

with the WBC in full swing, its only right we get into ‘vitilla’ (vee-tee-Ja, no morant) – the germ to
DR’s deep baseball culture.

un ‘juego callejero’ at heart, it’s stickball reimagined and POORDESIGN to the core (only equipment required issa broom stick and a water jug cap).

with a forever growing popularity, vitilla gets virtually played by anyone, everyone, at any given time and place (…there’s an app to match too; slides 1-2).

today, the game is crystalizing neatly thru formal leagues across the island, and even in the Bronx (Yankee stadium). in recent years Pedro Martinez (our Legend) dedicated a special segment to the game on the MLB Network, crediting its role as “the seed to his passion.”

at a time where teenage isolation is being promoted thru smartphones and tablet culture, vitilla is keeping kids free at play in the streets, developing fundamental social skills.

…more to come re: the sport and ongoing efforts to give the game its first official ‘home’ ⚾️⏳⏳ taken in Dominican Republic by @efebyefe

the Biennale back home has come to a close, just as the year does too. thankful for everyone who took the time to experience it – a few words about the work:

FRONTLINE (Trinchera del Honor), 2025, draws from impromptu structures set up by civilians amid the ongoing gang violence in Haiti.

operating through the lens of POORDESIGN – or, what i describe as an ‘architecture of survival’ – the installation positions Resilience as infrastructure, while giving shape to the permanent effects of prolonged crises.

recontextualized in the Dominican Republic, FRONTLINE confronts the racialized invisibility of Haitian civilian suffering as a result of the island’s shared, yet unevenly acknowledged histories.
