Last Friday was a success! Thanks to @jamaicaartscenter for the opportunity to show here in Queens and to @margaritalilarosa for understanding my vision and the importance of the archive in my work. Congratulations to all the artists, what a roster. We’re pleased to introduce EFE (@efebyefe), our current artist-in-residence, working out of STUDIO 1 throughout the month of June. During his time at 99 Canal, he has been preparing new work for his exhibition, “ Under a Plantain Tree: Notes on Liberation” curated by @margaritalilarosa and produced by JCAL Program Associate @njarianderson at @jamaicaartscenter EFE is an artist whose practice moves between object-making and social inquiry, registering moments of resilience across Caribbean histories. Central to his work is POORDESIGN – an “architecture of survival” based on extreme resourcefulness that draws from the informal and often overlooked strategies that emerge where (formal) systems fail. Through the use of found materials, he reframes these practices as sites of knowledge, agency, and cultural continuity.
