COTE 550 (@cotekoreansteakhouse) is the Midtown outpost of the Korean steakhouse that made Simon Kim’s name, a room that takes the fire and conviviality of Korean barbecue and dresses it in classic American chophouse polish. The original COTE holds a Michelin star, and this Madison Avenue address carries the same DNA: USDA Prime beef, a wine list north of 1,200 labels, and a cocktail program that keeps pace with the food.

We came as a group of six and went with the Butcher’s Feast, and it turned out to be more than plenty for the table, a genuinely smart choice for a bigger group that wants variety without having to coordinate a dozen separate orders. Everything that came out was excellent, and it left us wanting to come back and work through the a la carte menu properly next time.

The format is part of what makes it work so well for a group. Grill-top tables are built for four or more, so the meal plays out as a shared, hands-on feast with staff cooking and guiding tableside, more interactive than a typical steakhouse dinner. It is a strong pick for a celebration, a girls’ night, or anything worth making a production of.

샤브오 (@shabuo.seoul) sits near Apgujeong Rodeo, opened by broadcaster 정준하, an elegant, softly lit shabu shabu spot with a design forward look that leans more contemporary lounge than traditional hot pot house. The signature setup is an individual induction burner and personal pot at every seat, which turns what is usually a shared, slightly chaotic meal into something calmer and easier for a group with different tastes at the table. A wall of celebrity signatures near the entrance is a nice reminder of who is behind the place and who has come through since.

We went for a family lunch, and the format made it genuinely great, everyone got to control their own broth, pacing, and dip without stepping on anyone else’s cooking. The Jirisan black pork lunch set was the standout, thinly sliced, high quality pork with a clean, well balanced broth and a generous spread of banchan and dipping sauces alongside it. It scales nicely too, with private rooms and long tables suited to bigger groups.

페레힐 (@perehil_kr) is tucked into a quiet alley off Seongsu station, a small white walled Spanish spot with ivy climbing the entrance and an open kitchen inside. The name comes from perejil, Spanish for parsley, and that ingredient forward instinct shows up across the menu, everything built on house made sauces rather than shortcuts.

We went for dinner, and the flavors came in bold, the red shrimp bisque pasta and the seafood squid ink paella both lean sweet and rich. This is not the place for strict Spanish authenticity so much as a confident, crowd pleasing interpretation tuned to what reads well to a Korean palate right now, and taken on those terms, it delivered. We enjoyed the meal.

What actually stood out most was the service. Every staff member we interacted with was warm in a way that felt genuine rather than performative, attentive without hovering, the kind of hospitality that elevates a meal even when the food itself is the more polarizing part of the night. Worth knowing going in: dinner service expects at least one alcoholic order per table, so plan accordingly, and the sangria gets good marks if you want something easy.

평안도 족발집 is the original of the originals on Jangchung dong’s famous jokbal strip, opened in 1961 by a woman from Pyongan province who fled south, and it is widely credited as the place that started Seoul’s entire jokbal tradition. Everything else on this street exists in its shadow, and the sign out front still makes a point of saying so.

The style here is old school: no herbal medicine, no coffee, no shortcuts, just pork trotter, soy sauce, ginger, scallion, and onion, simmered in a seed broth that gets topped up and reused daily, reportedly for decades running. The result is jokbal with a clean, restrained flavor rather than an aggressively seasoned one, tender without turning to mush, and the dongchimi on the side cuts through it perfectly. The counter theater of watching them hand slice the meat as you walk in is part of the experience.

We went for dinner during a stay at the Shilla, which sits an easy walk away, and it made for a great pairing, a proper Seoul institution right in the neighborhood. One heads up: get there early. This place draws a long line once dinner hour hits, and it moves slower than you would like once the wait sets in.

마하 한남 (@maha.hannam) is run by an architect, and it shows in every corner of the space. Housed in a former bathhouse tucked into a quiet Hannam neighborhood, the building keeps its original roof tiling on the outside while the inside has been reimagined into a warm, stone and wood filled lounge with sweeping Han River views through a wall of glass. It functions as part cafe, part whiskey bar, part architecture studio and library, the kind of layered concept that only really works when the person behind it has a genuine point of view about space.

By day it runs as a coffee spot with well made drinks. On Friday and Saturday nights, it shifts gears, coffee orders stop at 9pm and it becomes an intimate whiskey bar until midnight, river view included. It is adults only and pet free by design, which keeps the atmosphere calm and makes it feel less like a cafe you pass through and more like a room you settle into.

Come for golden hour if you can. The stone fireplace, low furniture, and floor to ceiling windows make this one of the more atmospheric places in Hannam to watch the light change over the river.

팔선 sits on the second floor of the Shilla Seoul, and it delivers exactly the kind of polish you would expect from a hotel Chinese restaurant at this level: warm wood screens at the entrance, a hushed gallery like dining room, and food that backs up the setting instead of coasting on it. The kitchen leans into traditional Cantonese technique with a lighter, ingredient forward hand.

It runs expensive, no getting around that, but the execution justifies it. This is a better fit for a group than an intimate two top, since several of the signature dishes come out in large format portions built for sharing rather than a tidy plate for two. That said, if you do come as a couple, the low lit dining room and unhurried pacing still make it a strong date spot, just budget for a course menu rather than trying to sample everything a la carte.

One tip if you are treating this as a special occasion: it pairs naturally with a Shilla stay, so if you are using a hotel credit or a package that includes dining, this is a smart place to put it toward.

에그앤플라워 (@eggnflour_pasta) sits in Haebangchon under chef 김희은, who most people will recognize from her run on 흑백요리사 (Culinary Class Wars), running the kitchen alongside chef 윤대현. It is their second restaurant after the Michelin one starred 소울, and it has picked up a Michelin Bib Gourmand nod of its own along with a genuinely excellent view: the dining room’s picture windows look straight out toward Namsan Tower, and the rooftop terrace makes for one of the better sunset tables in this part of Seoul.

The pasta itself is fresh, made in house daily, and the format is easy to like: playful shapes like capellini and lumache, an emphasis on eggs and flour done well, and a menu that pairs each shape with a sauce built specifically for it. The signature red shrimp squid ink capellini has real depth, and it is easy to see why the space photographs so well and draws a crowd.

Where it lands for us is solidly good rather than showstopping. Seoul’s pasta scene has gotten genuinely competitive over the past couple of years, and against that backdrop this did not quite crack our favorites. That said, there is something appealing about the homemade, unfussy character of the cooking here, and between the view and the casual warmth of the room, it still earns a place on the list, especially for a relaxed dinner or a date where atmosphere matters as much as the plate in front of you.

js가든 (@jsgarden.official) 시그니처 잠실 에비뉴엘점 sits inside the Lotte Avenue L building in Jamsil, and it is the premium tier of the js가든 group, a step up from the original locations in both ingredients and execution. The entrance alone sets the tone: a rounded marble foyer, low pendant lighting, and a hostess stand that feels closer to a hotel restaurant than a typical Chinese spot.

We have come back to this particular location several times, and it has earned its spot as a reliable choice for both family meals and business lunches. The pre-fixe course menus are the move here. It takes the guesswork out of ordering for a group, moves at a steady pace, and covers enough range that everyone at the table finds something they love, whether that is Peking duck, the tangsuyuk with its distinctive fluffy texture, or the truffle jjajangmyeon made with Korean beef, which might be the most talked about dish in the whole js가든 lineup. The room itself flexes easily between an intimate two top and a private room for a bigger group or a client lunch.

오오쥬 is a newer arrival on the Apgujeong Rodeo dining map, tucked a few minutes from the station with a striking entrance, all dark timber and a landscaped rock garden that gives it a quiet, almost teahouse gravity before you even sit down. Inside, the room keeps that elevated feel going: round tables, warm lighting, big windows looking out onto the street. It plays modern Chinese dining rather than the casual, lively dim sum parlor format, closer in spirit to Hong Kong Cantonese and Sichuan cooking than to a neighborhood dumpling spot.

Lunch here is the smart way in. The pre fixe menus lean pricey for a midday meal, but the a la carte lineup is generously priced for what it is, making it easy to build a lighter lunch without committing to the full course experience. What we ordered was genuinely well executed, clean, confident cooking with the kind of polish that makes you want to come back and see what the kitchen does with a full tasting menu. Consider this an early note rather than a final verdict; a set menu visit is next on the list!

본지르르 베이커리 서촌 (@vonzrrbakery) is proof that a neighborhood bakery can double as a genuine workspace without losing any of its charm. Spread across three floors near Gyeongbokgung Station, it gives you actual room to breathe: a ground floor for the grab and go crowd, upper floors with quieter seating that make it easy to post up with a laptop for a few hours, and a terrace if you want natural light while you work.

The bread program is the real draw. The gourmet butter salt bread has that shattering, salty crust that immediately explains why it is a bestseller, and the lemon butterfly pastry is bright and delicate in a way that a lot of Seoul bakeries do not attempt. Everything from the viennoiserie to the drinks program tastes considered rather than mass produced, down to the decaf americano and vanilla bean latte, both of which held their own against the pastries instead of getting lost next to them.

오스테리아 오르조 (@osteriaorzo) has held its spot in the Michelin Guide for six consecutive years, and one visit to its narrow, open-kitchen dining room in Hannam explains why. This is an osteria in the truest sense: unpretentious, wine-forward, built around a kitchen counter where you can watch every dish take shape.

The spaghettini is the one to order. Thin, delicate strands that carry sauce differently than a heartier tagliatelle or tajarin would, letting the seasoning cling rather than pool, so every bite lands with the same intensity as the first. It’s a quieter dish than the restaurant’s louder hits, but that restraint is exactly what makes it feel considered rather than showy, the kind of pasta that convinces you the kitchen understands technique as much as flavor.

Seating is tight (counter and tables sit close enough to feel communal), and reservations move fast, so book ahead on CatchTable, especially for weekend dinners or anything worth celebrating.

Camel Coffee (@camelcoffee_kor) is a cult-favorite Seoul café known for its signature Camel Coffee—a creamy, layered coffee with a rich but surprisingly balanced sweetness. The Seochon location sits near Gyeongbokgung in a charming, slightly industrial space, with bar seating downstairs and a quieter second floor overlooking the neighborhood.

The Camel Coffee (₩6,500) is the obvious order and worth the hype. It’s smooth, creamy, and just sweet enough without overpowering the coffee. A great stop while wandering around Seochon, and one I’d happily return to.
