Join us for a one-of-a-kind night out with Dr. Jason Shepherd — cocktails, great conversation, and the chance to meet new people.

Neuroscientist Dr. Jason Shepherd presents his lab’s latest cutting-edge research on how evolution repurposed an ancient virus that became critical for memory and protecting our brains against Alzheimer’s disease. The Arc protein still behaves a little like the virus it originated from. It wraps itself in a tiny bubble to carry vital information from one neuron to the next – but it can also carry toxic proteins like Tau, a protein that’s a central driver of Alzheimer’s disease pathology.

In a study on mice, the Shepherd Lab found that Arc protects sick cells in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Exporting Tau out relieves the neuron it came from and helps it survive longer, but eventually the same delivery vehicle slowly damages its neighbors as they take up the toxic Tau. Join us as we dive deeper into this paradox and learn about possible avenues for future therapies that prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Tickets: link in bio.

(The content and views shared during this event are Dr. Shepherd's own and not the University of Utah's.)

Before there was whiskey, there was grit.

The name Eight Settlers honors the pioneer families whose determination helped shape Union, Utah. Their legacy of courage, hard work, and community lives on in everything we create.

Here’s to honoring the past, celebrating the present, and raising a glass to what’s next.

Today, I just want to take a moment to recognize my incredible Eight Settlers family.

I am incredibly grateful to work alongside such a talented, caring, and dedicated group of people. Every day, each of you brings something special to our team, and I couldn’t be more thankful.

A special shout-out to @readinrachel and @jamiepetro7 for always being there whenever the business needs and for caring so deeply about Eight Settlers. Your dedication and leadership mean the world to me.

To @jakublabedz and John, for always stepping up, solving problems, and somehow managing to fix just about everything.

To @charliedestefano, for giving up part of your day off to come in and fix the dishwasher.

And to @lace_e_face , thank you for taking the time to work with Chef on our menu. Your creativity and willingness to help make us better are truly appreciated.

To the rest of our amazing team, thank you for everything you do, whether it’s on our quieter days or during our busiest services. Thank you for giving your best, for supporting one another, and help create the experience our guests know and love.

Eight Settlers is what it is because of all of you. You are so much more than a team, you are family. ❤️ taken in Cottonwood Heights, Utah by @eightsettlers
