A look inside my new book 📙

Carrying the Bones explores how grief can be more than private sorrow—it can become an artistic, communal, and ecological practice.

“Come here into the candlelight. I am not afraid / To look at the dead.” —Rilke, as seen in the first epigraph of my book 🕯️

Take a peek inside my book to see what I wrote about rituals, Emily Dickinson, and poetry more broadly 🥀

Ten years between the first and last photo. My first job was selling books at @fourseasonsbooks. I wrote poems at the counter and fell in love with reading again. I became a writer in that shop. I read my beloved Station Eleven for the first time in that shop. I launched our magazine in that shop. And tonight, my dearest oldest pals and professors and mentors and community and my mama came out to hear me read from my book, my book I only dreamt of, in this sweet ol book shop. Thank you for making me feel like a rock star in my home town. 🧡 Please note the bedazzled book cover!! I’m still crying! 🥹✨ by @eilyana

It’s release day for my first book: a study in grief and death rituals in the digital age. Here she is, spotted with @readappalachia and @bryanjstag. 🦴

Thank you to @kentuckypress and my editor, Abby of @littlebirdsliterary for believing in this project and bringing it into the world. 📙

“What does it mean to tell the bees? To draw the natural world into our grief.” 🐝

In her new book, Carrying the Bones: Rituals for a Dying World, writer, multimedia artist, and professor @eilyana explores the ways we mourn, not only for the people we’ve lost, but for relationships, places, ecosystems, traditions, and even the world as we know it. This beautiful book weaves together memoir, cultural analysis, poetry, and asks what we might gain if we allowed ourselves to sit more fully with death and grief rather than rushing to move forward.

In our latest episode, Monica and Eileen talk about the role nature has played in mourning throughout history, the ways American culture and capitalism shape our relationship to death, and what it means to grieve not only those who have died, but those who are still living and the world itself.

What rituals do we need to carry our grief—and how might the natural world help us imagine them?

I was thrilled to speak with @biophilicsolutions about my new book, Carrying the Bones: Rituals for a Dying World.

I love to see the way my friends interact with my book🌻🧡🦴

The first slide: Laiken’s collage of the last paragraph of my book.

The second slide: Emily, who introduced me to this press and without whom the book would not have existed, annotating my book. If you are someone who writes in books, then you must know; it is a dream to see marginalia alongside your words.

The last slide: Ashley from the Bluestockings Book Club, reading my book. Surreal! 🧡

🌻 The official release for Carrying the Bones: Rituals for a Dying World is October 13. 🦴
