End of an era. 49 years of private practice.
So proud of my dad and the decades-long relationships and care he cultivated. Grateful I could be present for this closure, and a witness to a few of the friendships and real love that was earned and shared between him and his patients. by @ekedan

Grateful to hold this book, our collaboration with Bridget (@bridgetcrone ) and Diann ( @diannbauer ) for AST ( @alliancesoutherntriangle ). This was a joy, working together. Bridget created the space for us to try new forms and ideas. We began this project in summer 2021, gathering it into a small collection of short fiction and flotsam. The loss of both D and B within the year has been devastating, to everyone that loved them, knew them, worked with them. I miss them so much.

It felt good to dip into this book, on returning last night from @christina_pettersson ‘s sublime conclusion of her latest project at Faena— a procession to the sea, accompanied by planetary alignments.

Deep thanks to Sam (@samnightingale_99 )and Polly (@pollystanton) for including us in this beautiful collection , ‘Fieldwork for Future Ecologies’ published by @onomatopeenet by @ekedan

slowly emerging from a 2022 dark mode to greet the new year…the lessons were hard won and embodied, and access was granted to the gifts asking me to receive them already.

2023 was welcomed in with rain showers, vomiting off a balcony overlooking the hollywood hills, and a big sense of relief. clearing out the debris of 2022 feels good.

hoping that, you too, friends, experienced a wildly healing and fortifying homecoming of sorts in last year’s choppy waters. let us all embark on a brilliant new year — more awake, more connected, killing it with love and generosity; and hope to share it with more of you by @ekedan

“As we witness the incoming deluge of the climate crisis, how can we mourn at the scale of a species? For a species? On the scale of the planet? What is the duration of mourning at that scale?”
-Diann Bauer

Drowning in Futures: Modeling Climate Grief

Please join us Today, Sunday, August 21 from 5–9 pm at @name_publications for Drowning in Futures: Modeling Climate Grief, a screening and gathering hosted by A.S.T. @alliancesoutherntriangle and [NAME] Publications in tribute to artist, collaborator and dearest friend Diann Bauer. In addition to celebrating Diann’s life and work, the day’s conversations will center around what it means to understand, grieve, and prepare for a future planet impacted by climate change. These conversations will be guided by ideas of collectivity, imaging, temporarily, and the persistence of alliances—all of which have been central to both A.S.T and Bauer’s artistic practices. The event will feature a screening of This Will Happen in Time (2015), Scalar Oscillation (2018), Time Itself is Otherwise (2018), and Prologue: Politics as Palliative Care of the Species (2019) as well as contributions by A.S.T, Stephanie Wakefield, Suhail Malik, and Natalia Zuluaga.

the unholy adjacencies you encounter on a typical south florida excursion…

in this case, the drive to black creek trail in biscayne national park is a weird ass stretch of palm tree farms, county landfill, nuclear power plant, among other things…

not clear what the point or message is here — maybe it’s a grudging awe at the ways we grab paradise by the balls and force it to produce. or the particular manifestations/manipulations/mutations of landscape and ecology that we do, and what they reveal about the insatiable us

——-

how much of it was planned (and what was the plan?); how much is a result of piecemeal or greedy expediency; how much is retroactive corrective measures after the damage leaks out…(eg. cerp, turkey point cooling canals, c-111, east cape canal plug, piney point, )

how much fun it is, to build big things, make big deals, carve stuff up. And how robust the countervailing drives and efforts must be to protect and take care and be accountable to a place and all the beings…

why do we have to be such assholes; and then work exponentially harder to fix the messes we make (if we bother to fix them). Is there a better way to do civilization? Or are we, and our physical spaces, trapped in our own rock logics, time bombs waiting to explode?

Is it even possible for us to build civilization with impermanence in mind. How would you make that a graspable story? taken in Black Creek Trail by @ekedan

The headlights/sirens/beacons/solar loops of this world are rousing our waterlogged brains, out of the clouds and climate models, and back to what’s happening between the 45th and 50th latitudes (ie Ukraine)

despite feeling ignorant and useless in the situation, the least we can do is acknowledge what is happening, acknowledge the stakes, the complexity…because the moment is part of a rising tide, of crises and conflicts showing us the world as it is, reminding us of our collective ground, and how to gather ourselves for the future.

on one hand, not enough attention is paid to our [US/West’s] complicity in this conflict, our unwillingness to scrutinize our part (Realism, J. Mearsheimer) on the other hand, realist political thinking denies the agency of individual actors, of collectives, of luck, of contingency (E.Klein).

the darkness is heavy, and it’s still ahead. people killing, people fighting, people fleeing, people surviving. that’s Ukrainian reality now. risks of miscalculation and escalation loom. what is the country, a year from now…what is the world a year from now

But despite what happens, Ukrainian resistance is changing the script….

They’re reminding us that ‘history is also made by us…that freedom has to be affirmed, with risktaking, by us [v. by great state powers] They’re reminding us that ‘we have to resist inevitability, our own thoughtless optimism, and ideas of eternity — that there’s just one way that the past and future can go… And the way to do that is to be creative, to imagine how things could be different, to think our way into multiple better futures….(T.Snyder) by @ekedan

wanting to get inside, underneath the place, but can’t help feeling we’re coasting the surface before it swallows us

It was the best case scenario, It was the worst case scenario…

piecing together half-baked thoughts around climate models, scenario planning and distress signals; as well as how these things act as both mirrors and portals -- showing us the ways we’re wired; as well as maybe opening up ways to re-tool our storymaking and communication

re. scenario methods [a kind of planning used by military, governments, corporations to deal with uncertainty, complexity, long time horizons]; they’re multi-layered tools with unique motivations, intentions, expectations depending on who’s using them. beyond ‘Control’ and ’How can we keep winning?’ other possible uses for gigantic scale wrangling:

> Alternate realities happening at once
> Care and Protection (how? whose?)
> Transformation (if the best case is also the worst, then what?)
or
> How do you prepare for loss? by @ekedan
