HEY ELBOW/ FLOCK DESIGN / ART COVER

I was fortunate enough to design Hey Elbow’s new release FLOCK with Adrian Recordings.. A band that has always been an inspiration, somehow the stars aligned late last year and I got to design their album cover, press photos and digital release. Thank you to the band for trusting me with this!

Inspired by Helena Almeida’s work that I’ve recently been obsessing over, her practice of using her body as her work and the ever-present cobalt blue. Using the bodies of the contemporary dancers, who were part of the experiment that FLOCK is allowed me to create motion in the imagery. Working within the boundaries of the artwork and music I feel that I have been able to capture some of the improvisation that is so central to the work, as well as leaning into more collective feeling that can highlight the FLOCK but also the individual capabilities.

Mirrored with analogue and technological applications like bitmaps and scanning blurs I have tried to create a motion within the still. Something that my practice continues to be interested in and attempt, how can I make my mostly digital practice use analogue techniques and tactility in order to give the design life?

The vinyl is available to be pre-ordered. See link in bio.

In my next post about it, I will share more of the behind the scenes, the process and how we got to the final design.

I’ve got an artwork in the auction with @artauction4pals

‘31°22′48″N 35°10′51″E مسافر يطا’

Dimensions: H650mm x W525mm
Created: 2023 based on archival images from work in Palestine 2017.

‘Resistance comes in many ways, these men are people that I got to spend some time with, talk to and listen to their acts of sumud. The Israeli propaganda wants you to believe that all Palestinian men are a certain way and I thought that I could shed a little light on some of the Palestinian men I’ve met.

Designed the exhibition catalogue for Between Suns by Khaled Sabsabi, curated by Mikala Tai, at Vessel Contemporary.

The design takes its cues from the exhibition itself: coffee as pigment and blessing, the space between the seen and the unseen, a sky caught somewhere between two suns. I built the visual identity for the show too, so the catalogue is where that all came together. Soft blues, halftone light, and type that sits somewhere between solid and outline, there and not quite there.

It was a privilege to give shape to work this personal and this generous.

Between Suns ran between 7 Aug - 20 September at Vessel Contemporary, Walyalup (Fremantle). by @ekuvelius

Today is the last day of our exhibition. We couldn’t be prouder of Vessel’s presentation of Between Suns by Khaled Sabsabi, curated by Mikala Tai and we’d like to extend one last invitation to experience the show. It’s open today from 11–5.

Through the exhibition, Khaled invites audiences into a space where intuition, ritual and belief become ways of navigating the world, proposing spirituality not as certainty but as an openness to the unknown.
Presenting a survey show that highlights one of the most important voices of our time feels surreal but timely. For over 35 years, Khaled has worked across mediums and borders, collaborating with communities locally and internationally. His work centres on social justice and lived experience, informed by his migration from Lebanon in 1976 to escape the civil war.

These are the moments we do this for. We believe WA needs more shows like this - more contemporary art and more voices like Khaled’s.

Thank you Mikala and Khaled for trusting us, and thanks to all visitors and supporters!

After couple of days after our amazing opening weekend I find myself with a little bit of time for reflection. In my speech on Friday night I think I said: “the pinch me moment is not in that we have one of Australia’s biggest contemporary artists exhibiting with us. The pinch me moment is that we have an artist whose practice embodies what we want to do with Vessel. Khaled’s practice is a generous invitation to his world, and we get to experience it and imagine different and better futures. @peacefender and @mikalatai , I’m so thankful to your generosity and incredible knowledge and wisdom, thanks for doing this with us.

@laninajuni , as always, we couldn’t have done this without you wearing all your hats on the rack, I love doing this with you and can’t wait for what’s to come! But let’s enjoy this amazing show for a bit now!

Thanks to the incredible install wizard @elismith73 and thank you Hugh for your help, thanks to City of Fremantle. Thank you @njunipu for helping us with audio set up and everything else, including allowing Khaled to dust off the cobwebs on the decks.

Thank you @joes.printing for your support and assistance with making Vessel look fab with your prints! Thanks Lucia @juanitatzatziki for your countless hours of support. Thanks @ladybirdlee and @chee_parker for your support of us!

Thanks to the board for believing in this from the start and knowing where our values sit when it matters the most. @adamjorlen @zalimorgan @annika__kristensen @sharmila______________ @isabellabosworth @giorgiamack

Thanks to the incredible community who stepped up and made this happen, quite frankly couldn’t have done it without you. A special thanks to @petestonecom from @cityoffremantle who supported us from day one, it really really matters!

Between Suns is open until Sunday 20 September. by @ekuvelius

Khaled is currently installing Aajyna. Here are a couple of behind the scenes photographs.

Aajyna is Sabsabi’s first visual artwork, and an anchor point that he continues to reimagine.

Sabsabi processes works iteratively, where works and series oscillate back into focus in his practice. He is constantly revisiting and reimaging the work, capturing with each edition his shifts in perspective and evolving context. For Vessel Aajyna is presented for the first time outside of the Gallery context.

Hey everyone,

You might think I’m completely buried in prepping for Vessel’s Between Suns — Khaled Sabsabi’s show, curated by Mikala Tai, and you’d be right. It’s going to be extraordinary. But somewhere in the not-so-distant future things will calm down (they always do, right? RIGHT?) and I’m going to need some more freelance work in my life.

Here’s the reality: Nina and I don’t even add up to 1 FTE for Vessel between us. So I’ll be back down to my 0.4 FTE and need to fill the rest of the week with good work — creative strategy, graphic design, and anything adjacent that gets me excited.

Slide into my DMs, I’ll actually reply. Or email me if that’s more your vibe.
(Yes, AI helped write this post. No, it didn’t write my actual work — (it did add all of these funny long lines —) but my part’s still all me, sass and all.)

Also, look at all the amazing projects I have been across! My best work is when the design or strategy work has a purpose. Let’s chat. by @ekuvelius
